2.44 The placement of horn is not wierd. It is actually very much handy as compared to what today’s shitty steering (almost on all cars) wheels have- only the center round portion works as a horn which is wierd. Everytime you have to press the horn, you have to lift one of your hand from steering wheel and then press the horn. Now this is wierd. And it becomes more wierd when we are on curvy ghat roads and we have to sound horn on every turn. You get distracted as you have to sound horn as well as hold the steering wheel on the turned position to keep vehicle moving on a curved road. The type of horn that we see on Sumo Grande’s steering is similar to that of M800 1993 model on which I learnt driving. This is handy as we can press the horn instantly whenever we want irrespective of the position of the steering wheel. There is another type of horn in which the entire steering wheel is a horn button( WagonR 2004 model and 2017 Datsun Go+ models). We had WagonR before and now we have Go+. Certain trends in cars are useless and no practical at all. LED headlamps is one of them. Halogen setup of our Datsun Go+ is lot better than LED headlapms of many high priced cars.
It was an amazing car. I bought it brand new at just 8.9 lakhs on road , the top end GX variant in 2009, used it for 90000 km and sold it in 2012. I still see this car in my locality and last time I spoke to the owner, it had done 1,90,000 km and has no issues at all. That 2.2 dicor in 120 bhp tune is super reliable and the car could cruse at 140-150 kmph all day. Ride quality was nice, every passenger got roof Ac vents and the seats were comfortable. Nice car but never saw sales success.
Totally agree, my dad purchased two Sumos brand new in 97 for his tourist venture, that venture didn't go too well(lol) but we went everywhere in them, great fond memories of the legend first gen!
The main flow of the car was that tata marketed it as an mpv wheres regular sumo was proper suv with optional 4x4. Grande was heavy af also suffered huge body role and lacked space. Launch of mahindra Xylo killed sumo grande.
I owned one for about 7 years....My first and last Tata vehicle....bought a Sumo Grande against all kinds of advice from my office colleagues who were picking up german cars at that time....When it worked there was nothing like it....Tata's should be having a full file on my vehicle based on the issues I had and wrote to them about....Finally just had to part with it due to the unreliability of it....If they fixed those and come back, I would buy it again any time....But honestly, my mind is still 'scared' with the experiences of the time....Some of its dimensions/features/specs are just the best in the world I think !
Although Sumo Grande was launched to replace Sumo but Sumo kept selling without any mechanical changes. It kept on selling with that 3ltr crdi engine till 2019!!
Buddy the safest car one could have ever bought 120 kmph speed crash into divider and what we got was a scratch on head, car had turned into Suzuki Omni from front but yeah it took a while to repair and lousy amount too but still using this demon love this car 💥

Actually the horn placement is not that weird ..u dont have to lift your hand from the steering...u can press it with ur thumb..some cars which dont have steering mounted controls had offered it by calling it 'dual horn' feature

Got a 2008 grande dicor . There was a time i would really smoke the scorpio mhawk's and innova's with it in a straight line. It would do 120 kmph in 3rd gear back then and i managed to hit 160 kmph many times. There is a small sensor attached to the air filter which collects dust and affect the performance of the car. Cleaning it with wd40 makes things better.
Tata knows very well in each and every trip the commercial driver in India will utilise the every inch inside the vehicle with passengers and their heavy stuffs weighing almost half the GVW of the vehicle. So they have to install heavy commercial vehicle level brakes which will last longer.
Tata has engineered this aged before. If this could have launched this time then a tough competition for many . I think Tuv n bolero is only option for this this kind of mechanism. Many good mechanically powerful car is underrated bcoz fancy and cosmetics features.
Tata sumos always have good low end punch, I bought a sumo gold cr4 in 2017, put maxxis offroad tyres in it, it performs like a 4x4 in rural and extremely bad roads, because it's packed with a 3.0 dicor engine from tata, it pass through obstacles in which bolero can't pass, max torque of 250nm comes in at just 1000rpm, that's insane. I wish I could have bought tata movus too which shares the same build as of tata xenon which is quite good in safety. Sadly, the legend sumo was discontinue.
