    I love Moxie, it's not always the easiest to find but well worth buying when you can. If you're looking for a copy-cat that's easier to make at home, or as a bartender as recommended in the video:
    8oz Coke or Coke Zero (not diet)
    3-4 Dashes of aromatic bitters
    Either add the bitters first or stir lightly; adjust amount of bitters to taste.
    It might not be exact, but it's close enough and the ingredients are nice and simple. (And at least where I'm at, cheaper than buying Moxie)
    Very slick seeing a more thorough tutorial though.

    gentian root was in it since the beginning. It is also claimed moxie was the first commercial drink to have it. And that is where to "healing properties" came from.

      Not healing, nerve restorative, and yes it was in it from the beginning when Thompson make the recipe.

      @@draxgoodall3685 Just had Moxie BBQ sauce at the festival yesterday, at a Jamaican food truck. They had diet Moxie too, which is great. My family has an old, wooden Moxie box from pre-1946. I have no idea how old it actually is.

    Thanks for posting this- especially since I'm a genuine Moxie lover trapped in a foreign land. Back when I lived in New England, I had a favorite pick me up for after hot weather workouts I called "The Thirsty Gardener"; one can of ice cold Moxie in a chilled 1 qt. mason jar, with 4oz. of a neutral flavor Vodka, then add the biggest frozen fresh strawberries on hand to nearly full- no ice. Sit in the shade, sip on the drink, and eat the berries as they thaw- perfect. 😊The faint vanilla tones and bitterness of the Moxie makes the berries taste even sweeter, and the Vodka serves to enhance their perfume, giving it a clean, sharp, slightly medicinal tang without muddying up the flavors like a brown liquor would. Perfect 'before dinner' drink...

    Another interesting video Darcy. I’d be interested to know if you ever looked at Irn-Bru (Scottish, contains quinine) which now comes with sweeteners (UK sugar tax), alas, although I think in Canada you can still get it with just sugar.

    • @Artofdrink
      @Artofdrink  2 года назад +2

      I don't have much experience with Irn-Bru, it is hard to come by here. There are other quinine colas I've tried and there are old recipes for similar, but I've never come across any mentions of Irn-Bru in old soda books/journals, though most of those are North American.

    How would malic acid adjust the taste of this recipe? I often use malic acid for food and drink to add an acidity with less of its own flavor to overwhelm others (compared to citric acid), but I've never used acid phosphate or phosphoric acid.

    If I were to replace the Anise essence with an Anise extract, how much would you recommend using?

    • @Artofdrink
      @Artofdrink  Год назад

      Depends on the anise extract concentration, but all extracts are less than an essential oil, so start with an equal amount and you can always adjust by adding more if you don’t find it flavourful enough.

    Honnestly, you make AMAZING, really precise video, but it's hard to follow you, specialy when english isn't native language, if you have time to ad at the screen the name and the description, that could help a lot, caus you use lot of really special ingredient, and if i don't watch 5 time i can't remember what is what...
    And hard to find the translation if i don't have the right word
    (ps : in your video "how to make a flavour essence", you put the word "on the screen with pen", that was really more easy to follow)

    I crunched numbers on things like a SodaStream home kit for making sodas.......so completely not worth it. CO2 cannisters shockingly expensive to buy. I tried making a rig with two bottles to put vinegar and baking soda in one, to infuse water with bubbles in the other.....Fail.

  • @Anonanon-ht7xx

    WHERE can these ingredients be purchased? What, exactly, is the last ingredient you add? Is this seltzer water? Has anyone crunched numbers on the cost to make this versus buying it through, for example Amazon, which lists a gouging retail price? Also, your final result is VERY pale compared to commercial Moxie.

      He used a much lighter shade caramel color than typical. Personally I buy gentian root and Wintergreen essential oil from Mountain Rose Herbs.
      After that, all I have to do is use 95% alcohol from Total Wine (Everclear) to make gentian root extract, Wintergreen essence, and a small amount of anise essence.
      If you haven't seen them yet, he has great tutorials on how to make all of these as well as caramel color.

      I just got a 12 pack for the first time in years and you're exactly right! It's practically just a root beer now. I add some angostura bitters or if I'm looking for a drink, some Jägermeister, it helps it become reminiscent if the original flavor.
      But otherwise, I'm looking to follow this video and make my own soon

    Maybe instead of each viewer jumping through hoops, tracking down sources, and reading dense certificates of safeness, you simply do that work for the viewer by selling kits. This kit has safe ingredients and recipes to make five sodas......that type of thing.
    Yes, lots of folks do this for the joy of messing around.
    Some of us are trying to do different things.....make rare soda flavors (birch beer, sasparilla, moxie) on a tight budget, cheaper than two dollars a can, which is what moxie costs now.
    Some of us are retired, disabled, but yearn for small luxuries. Skyrocketing inflation drives us to hope we can save a buck and DIY.
    I like your book, but it has such TINY print. Needs to be larger pages, larger font, and spiral bound so it can lay open on a kitchen counter.
    These days, almost impossible to give criticism without backlash. When I was young, I was taught things...."the customer signs your paycheck" for example, and "a customer complaint is not an annoyance or an interruption, it's an opportunity to improve" and "it costs five times more money to attract a new customer than it does to retain a current customer."
    All gone now......no such thing as the work ethic, no such thing as pride, integrity, honor, loyalty, courtesy, manners, dignity.
    All now is greed, lazy, "snarky", incompetent, stupidity, vapid, hasty, self-centered, unreliable. Shallow, superficial, no respect for anything but "What is popular".........popularity is not a measure of quality, but the kids now act as if it were.....
