- In this historic cheat day review I will be trying the oldest soda from the United States, Moxie!
We will be taste testing this legendary soda, going over its history, its many variations, fun facts, my review and much more!
Special thanks to Maximusthe4th for sending me a can of this stuff!
Notes:
Moxie predates Coca-Cola by ten years as one of the very first soft drinks as its origins date back to 1876.
Moxie was invented not as a soda but as a medicine nerve food that supposedly was to fight against "paralysis, softening of the brain, nervousness, and insomnia"
The man who created Moxie was Augustin Thompson who was born in 1835 was a physician who grew up in Maine and fought in the us civil war.
After the war in 1865, he started his own medical practice and became very successful and well known.
This is when he would eventually create moxie in Lowell Massachusetts and invest 15,000 dollars into marketing and selling it.
By 1884 moxie was sold as a syrup
The next year in 1885 moxie was sold as a carbonated soda.
In 1889 Thompson decided he was returning to his medical practice and had someone else take charge of the moxie brand.
Throughout the rest of his life he would write marketing campaigns for moxie until his death in 1903
In 1906 the moxie man or moxie boy, the sodas mascot, debuted.
There was always a bit of mystery as to who the moxie boy exactly was but the only real person mentioned was John T. Chamberlain of Revere, Massachusetts.
During the 1930’s moxie saw a significant drop in sales
1962 diet moxie was introduced
Up until 2007 moxie still existed but its availability was spotty. But in 2007 due to people demanding more of the soda it was released in some more areas of Florida
2018 it ultimately came into the hands of Coca-Cola company which now sells and distributes moxie nationwide in the US
Moxies taste is said to be much like root beer but with a bitter aftertaste due to the gentian root extract it’s made with.
Discontinued variants:
Moxie Cherry Cola, Moxie Cream Soda, Moxie Orange Cream, Ted's Root Beer, Moxie Energy, Moxie Energy Citrus, Moxie Energy Explosion, Moxie Energy Thunder, Olde New England Seltzer, Moxie Blue Cream
Fun facts:
President Calvin Coolidge was known to like moxie
Baseball player Ted Williams endorsed it in radio advertisements
And author e b white was quoted saying "Moxie contains gentian root, which is the path to the good life."

Moxie is by far my fav soda. I explain it as root beer with a licorice undertone. Good history lesson here too.
Lol you know I'm from Maine right? I live close to Lisbon, Maine which still has a Moxie Festival every year. I really didn't know it had a following in other states. I lived in South Carolina from 2014 to 2018 and never saw it.
I didn’t know that dude! Ahhh Vermont was the closest I made it to that area, which Vermont was clean and nice compared to where I live. I saw some photos of the moxie festival when I was researching the soda. Looks like a good time to me! Sadly it seems all the variants of moxie, like it’s cream soda is a thing of the past. Would love to have tried that.
Yeah, here in southern Illinois it’s non existent too. I vaguely remember seeing it online years ago as I usually google stuff about history.
Wife's family is from Bangor/Brewer, I pack cases in the trunk of the car when we head home to Missouri, otherwise the only way I can find it is order online, or sometimes Cracker Barrel has it in glass bottles.
@@jestucker2268 and oddly enough you don't see Moxie in glass bottles in Maine. What part of Missouri are you in? I used to live in the Branson area and later I lived in Joplin.
Now that I recall on my trip on the east coast last year, that’s the only place I saw a bottle of it was in a Cracker Barrel. I didn’t bother to pick one up then because space in my car was limited, literally every square inch. You’re from Missouri! Right across the river from me. You ever drink Vess soda?
The Best State of US, period !
Fell in love with it in the late 1990s when I lived in Boston, now I routinely "Bootleg" cases back to Missouri when I visit my wife's family in Maine.
You can order it online, but it's expensive to ship. Sometimes the local Cracker Barrel has glass bottles in their soda section.
Cost plus world market and bevmo both have it
That was literally one of the absolute best reviews I've ever seen you pull off on your Channel. I would be absolutely dead shocked if you did not end up with at least 1,000 views on this one that was absolutely outrageous absolutely incredible!!!!! The way you described Moxie is very much how I felt about it too. I'm not sure what I would give it on a scale of 1 to 10 but it is so freaking ridiculously fascinating because of how weird it is.
Well dang man! That’s quite the statement given how many reviews I’ve done and I can totally agree with you. Even with its bitter taste I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience of Moxie. From researching its history and onto actually reviewing it, I definitely felt “in the groove” during this one! Moxie is definitely unique. Thanks again for a can of it brother! 😎
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadioI didn't care for my first sip of Moxie, but my soon-to-be-wife at the time told me it takes (3) drinks, - drink, pause, drink, pause, drink, pause, - and yes, you were right, you keep wanting to go back for another drink.
3:49 HFS DUDE!!!!!! YOU ARE FREAKING KIIIIILING IT!!!!!!
Thanks mannnnn!
I was born in 1998, and I grew up drinking this. I think it actually used to be more bitter (not sure if that was just me having more sensitive taste buds). In recent years I find it's actually a lot sweeter than I remember.
Also, if you're into bartending or enjoy Old Fashioned cocktails, Angostura Bitters are generally used in them. Angostura bitters also use gentian root extract, so Angostura Bitters have a similar flavor profile to it.
I think it's gotten sweeter since 2018, when Coca-Cola took over ownership - makes me wonder if there was a switch to HFCS from sugar, or some other change to the recipe that's similar. - would be interesting to find a pre-2018 can and a current can and side-by-side taste them.
@@jestucker2268I agree 100%.
It's not the same. It's just root beer now. When I first drank it in the 80s it was very different from anything else. The Wall Street Journal at the time described it as lip curling. It took some getting used to, once you were acclimated it was really good. Now it's just another root beer.
It was probaly your child taist buds. Im souly convinced taist buds of youth are far more sensitive to certian flavors. Like i used to think attomic fierballs and big red gum used to be waaay hotter. Now im like.... this aint nuthin. Lol
@@jestucker2268the ingredients never changed. If u compare ingredient labels to a 80s label there exactly the same
Moxie is my all time favorite soda. The first time I had it I absolutely hated it. I tried it again and again and I began to appreciate the different flavors. Now I’m hooked.
It definitely is unique for sure. If I could easily find it here, there'd be a 12 pack chilling in my fridge lol
Grew up drinking this. Never realized it had such lore around it.
My 70-year-old father who lives in Maine loves Moxie.
Moxie is Maine's official state beverage.
The furthest I’ve been in that area is Vermont. Beautiful area up there. One day I shall make it to Maine and dine on lobster and wash it down with Moxie!
Dude did a fair review…. But he has no MOXIE!!! He explained it, and those who know… know…. Moxie is the best! 😊
You forgot to mention that Moxie had the first Radio Advertisement for a Soda ever.
Ersatz Moxie: A few dashes of Angostura bitters in root beer. Can be hardened with a shot of whiskey.
Our official soda here in Maine! Nice to see you at least try it. It's something you either love or hate - I'm not on the love side personally.
I have a drink you should try it’s called squirt. It’s a Mexican soda that taste like grapefruit because it’s made with grapefruit. And I think you should try it.
Such a horrible name for a drink.
@@John_Locke_108 it’s still a good drink
@eerieeric834 my dad loves squirt. I always seen him drinking it, I actually have a bottle in the mini fridge locked and ready for me to review. I’ll have to slap a priority to do that one soon!
@@eerieeric834 Can't recall the last time I had one but yeah, it's defintely great. Next time I'm at the gas station I'll see if they have any.
@jxchamb I always have to make an inappropriate joke when I see it at the store. It’s mandatory and I don’t care how old it gets
Moxie can best be described as a mix between rootbeer and gingeraile with a horhound flavor
1st vid of yours bro n idk what you're about but I subd 👌🏽
Hell yeah, thank bro. I’m about anything I find cool and interesting. Be in for a wild ride!
I hardly find it bitter. Love this stuff. Just sucks that it's so expensive.
In the mid to late 1960's I loved it. I was the only one in my family who did. After the 1960's I couldn't find it anymore. A few years ago a friend had some when I visited in Connecticut. It wasn't how I remembered..... I don't like it anymore.
Let's gooooooooo!!!!!
damn, i've never seen this sold anywhere but i really wanna try a can or two.
I order Moxie from Amazon. Moxie is the most unique tasting soda. When I drink it, I taste cinnamon.
Gentian root is the same thing in cocktail bitters
Really? Dig this! It takes moxy to make Moxie. Never heard of it! - just me in Palm Springs 🌴
Ya got Moxie Norma Jean! Go get em girl! Hahaha it’s definitely worth picking up if you see it in some weird soda shop. Even if it tastes like a**, you can at least say you drank the oldest soda in America lol
Not from Maine but absolutely love Moxie. It’s bitter, sure…but not black coffee bitter.
It tastes like 50/50 coke and root beer with a jagermeister black licorice aftertaste. If you hate jager or black licorice you wont like Moxie. But if you like it, odds are you’ll like Moxie.
It’s different for those of us who are different.
I love Moxie when I can find it here in Cincinnati.
Funny thing is when I tell my friends they are like "WHY THO?!"
I just like how it tastes. Apparently it's an acquired taste?
Hey, it is good! it’s definitely different, most people are used to basic stuff and don’t want to ever leave the “comfy zone” We are the adventurous ones! 😎🤘🏻
I wrestled in HS we used to down moxie because of sugar content.
Moxie tastes like carbonated orange juice after brushing your teeth
😂😂
Good vid bro
Thanks bro 😎
2:38 (feels guilty for drinking Pepsi now)
6:59 😂 your face! No longer guilty...
8:52 -Way to sell it!
10:13 Srsly? That was a surprise! -🌴
Feeding the Algorithm...
I realize that you didn’t like your first taste of Moxie. Most people don’t like their first taste of beer or whiskey either. I have been drinking Moxie since about age 5 which works out to 75 years (so far). Orange Crush fan as well. Cheers!
Moxie, dark rum, limeade.
After coke bought out moxie they change the formula and it taste much different then it did 30+ years ago.
The current version in not the same as it was in the 60s/70s. Not sure when it changed, but the taste is not nearly as divisive (love/hate) as it used to be. Most likely due to the high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors. Coca-Cola has definitely mellowed it out probably for a broader appeal. I miss the stronger bitter taste that just made you drink it a bit slower.
Oh yeah, most big soft drink companies switched from real sugar to high fructose corn syrup in the early 80’s. So I’m sure that definitely did mess up the original taste quite a bit. They should make a “real sugar” version of it. I’d love to see what that would taste like.
the proper way to drink moxie is from a bottle (not a can), half-flat, and ice cold.
I will die on this hill.
I had this growing up a few times. Family is from Worcester, Mass. I thought this was from like New Hampshire. I didn't know it was produced around the Boston area. Rather neat. But anyways.. It's absolutely GROSS.
Which one is the best, in your opinion ?
Which soda? Or root beer styled soda?
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio Cola one...
@intel2133 crystal Pepsi is my favorite
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio for me it was the Twist.
Remember it was supposed to be medicine.
All medicines I have experencied have weird tastes.
Yep, much like most sodas now always started out to be some kind of “cure” back in the old days.
Why would you pour it like that????
Like what? Into a glass?
You’re face says “yuck” lol
😂😂😂 I was about to bash this soda to hell and back but the bitterness grew on me, weirdly
You left out one of Moxie's original health claims. It cures lack of manliness. Maybe you should drink some every day.
Hmmm, I googled what you wrote but I didn’t see any claims that that is a health benefit. Do you have a source?
@@IndustrialIndustriesWorldRadio I saw it on one of the exhibits at the Moxie Museum. It's at the Union fairground in Union, Maine. Union is the birthplace of Dr. Augustin Thompson.
Don't be a dick, bro
@PhillShecter-dd1nn it’s all good, he’s just letting out aggression in a safe way. That’s not how I’d do it, I’d go to the gym. If it has to be in the form of a comment on some strangers video, so be it. I never take it personally. He has no idea who I am. 😎
I tried it before. It tastes like you ground up necco wafers. It's gross
