As someone in the broader smash community but definitely not 64, this combo contest always sneaks up on me and it always blows me away. Something so special about it - quite unlike any other form of gaming I have seen. When the commentators used the phrase "combo artist" it is easy to be skeptical but in my opinion that title is well-earned by these guys.
I had to rewind 20 times at 59:40 just to see the combo again, and then watch all the judges reactions… this was entirely too sick holy shit congrats Prince
I don't know who they are as someone mainly in the Melee scene, but man are these two such great commentators. They kept me interested and engaged all throughout failed attempts and even transitions where I'd normally skip ahead. I didn't even think about the transitions until the next combo came and I'd think "wow, already?" Great work you two!
You have to appreciate that crowd too. Hype, even while the contestants try the same thing 20 times in a row, still only positive energy. Such a fun event to watch
We all know that last Prince combo was the best, but I'd like to shoutout 38:16 because that would've been seriously nuts if they got the combo they wanted.
the precision needed to get these practiced combos out at home is insanely impressive alone, but having the NERVES from a entire convention watching you live is just unfathomable. Massive props to these players
The amount of technical skill and creativity shown by all the combo contestants was INSANE… especially Prince. I always look forward to SSC for this contest, and every year Prince pulls off a combo that pushes what I thought was possible in a Smash game. Good show!
SSC always finds a way to be unique, and the 64 combo contest is one of the best ways they've done it. I still can't believe this exists as an official tournament subsection.
The combo contest is potentially the greatest event of the year. No matter what game you play, no matter how you even feel about 64, everyone gathers around this game to watch the sickest combos that keep getting better and better every year
I play smash 64 all the time and the creativity+execution live blows my mind. These combos would be a dying art without this contest every year and that really makes me happy. This was a great one!
59:35 This right here. This is why I watch these contests. That is so clever! So many moving parts and things I’d never consider possible! What a combo holy crow Edit: posted this before I realized this was the winning combo like no doubt lmao

Do you think that sakurai likes this more than normal tournaments? Because it shows more of the game that he made lovingly? Or does he not like it because of how technical it is?
@@Creammm69 pretty sure all game creators would be glad that a game they made 20 years ago was still getting this much love, but keep projecting the actions of the nintendo corporation onto sakurai.
this event is awesome, i love how even though its competitive it has an artistic aspect to it where people are just trying to be creative and others just enjoy it
The great thing about his combos is that, no matter how far he makes it into them before retrying, you never truly know exactly what his finisher is (aside from his Captain Falcon combo in this contest, for obvious reasons).
Can't say I agree. Prince's last combo might be the best one ever in a contest, but I don't think any of the other players impressed with their combos. Like half of them didn't even finish properly and most of the time it took them until the end to even finish when they even managed to do so.
I feel like it would be cool to have a "blind combo contest" to add another level of excitement, not knowing who is doing the combo until after the scores are given. Also, it removes any bias from judges if there are any. Great contest need more of them!
Even if Taco got his first try no effort required. Prince would've still taken that, watching every contenst and prince is always bringing something new, to the highest level possible. 100% earned
Man, 8 seems way too high for the first combo. There’s some interesting stuff with the bumper, but besides the setup, the player only does one neutral air and one down air into shine and the bumpers and mine do all the damage and killing. It’s a neat idea, but I was expecting fives and sixes. If you lead off the contest with an eight on a combo like that, you have barely anywhere to go from there if a number of combos wow you more. And then the second combo dropped and there were three tens. Like honestly, an eight should be considered a really good score. Ten should be reserved for the combos that both absolutely blow your mind and are executed correctly. And in my opinion, as well as based on the judges’ reaction, Prince’s final combo was probably the only one that should have had all tens across the board; it was the one that hyped everyone up the most. A five can still be a combo that you had fun watching. And we even get eights on the combo at 38 minutes. And while it seems like a really creative idea with the damage boost, not only did we not get to know what the entire plan is for the combo (the main thing we saw was the damage boost into the boomerang hit and then the reverse back air, which was frankly very cool, but only one idea that didn’t lead to a kill or anything), but the final attempt was dropped and not what he was looking for. The way the judges do it basically limits them to less than half of their available numbers. Still a fun event, though.
I mean you have to remember that Axe and HBox dont play 64 they dint really know what is and isn't complicated there's visual clues but sometimes you can't tell visually
@@illford That might normally make some sense, but not only did the other judges vote pretty much identically to Hbox and Axe, Hbox has judged a few of the Smash 64 combo contests at this point, and the casters in this event were even saying that he typically gave lower scores compared to the other judges, which in my opinion was more sensible. I really don’t think that the issue I brought up has anything to do with Hbox and Axe not being Smash 64 players, as the other judges scored in pretty much the exact same way.
I 100% agree with you, even in the past years they were a little better with scoring but this year seemed like they were giving high scores to everyone. I was surprised when I saw the combo drop and they gave such high scores it was crazy. I’m glad prince came through at the end
Honestly, I'm not a huge stickler for the combo dropping, if a real person would still probably get hit. But I agree with you, that Fox combo, while funny, did NOT deserve a high score.
@@innertuber4049 I respect your opinion on the combo dropping, as just the idea of Prince connecting the falcon punch in that one combo was crazy, and the Link’s boomerang out of the damage boost was a really cool idea. My personal outlook is that this is where the best of the best smash 64 comboers come to win, and to win, you gotta have both creativity and execution in spades. I do value creativity and technical skill requirements more than the final execution myself as well, though.
iam not going to lie i do compete not in 64, but i love watching the combo contest. It blows my mind how long it takes these guys to lab this stuff out, and try to do it on the spot. Mad respect.
