    Dennis Cullen is recognised as one of Ireland’s finest folk sculptors. There are 105 known Cullen headstones, most dating from 1765 to 1785, many in Glendalough, and most depicting passion scenes. He was born in Monaseed and his carving technique was accomplished. He often signed his work, unusual for the day.
    Cullen executed his work in delicate and accurate detail. Christ on the cross is flanked by the Virgin with a crown and beads and St John with a bible. Cullen’s habit was to carve figures in the costume of the 18th century. The Virgin’s flowing hair is, in fact, a long lace veil - common mourning dress of the time.
    Several of the headstones feature a sunburst as well as sun, star and moon motifs. Powerful symbols of the soul and of immortality, as well as rebirth, these motifs were very popular in the eighteenth century. The IHS symbol (explained in Memento Mori) usually adorned the top of the headstone.
    The symbols used were the hammer, pincers, three nails, crown of thorns, two dice, box for the dice, and 30 pieces of silver. Some also have a ladder, spear, the moon and sun, and four different trees to show the different timbers used in the Cross.
    *The dice 4 plus 5 make 9 representing the fact that Jesus died on the 9th hour on the cross.

    Hi Sue, I'm enjoying binge watching. I believe there's history in every cemetery or where ever a loved one final resting place is. Famous or not. They were special to somebody. I loved looked at markers trying to see how old is the oldest one. You have been to some beautiful places. All interesting. I have to ask because I would not be human if I didn't. Have you been to the final resting place of Actor Edward Mulhare.? I have lost a lot of data. I believe he is buried in IRELAND. Though he passed in California in 1997 from lung cancer. He was indeed a Brilliant Actor. Only right that he would be buried in his home country. I live in Georgia. I think women my age only got to know of him through the series The Ghost and Mrs Muir. I saw it through reruns. Which you can still watch on RUclips. You couldn't help but fall in love with Captain Daniel Gregg.😁. Thanks for having such a wonderful channel and doing what you love. We all want to peek, see what's inside masaulems, crypts, look into open holes. I'm not put off by skeletons, skulls. I find it amazing how some are well preserved, even after 100 years some remains are still intact. I love seeing things through your eyes, visiting with you..not knowing what you are going to find. And know we are not so different after all.🙂. I have many videos to watch.but I am enjoying everyone I have seen. Take care, sending, 💜🕯✌🤗. Love,respect and positivity always. Hi Sue, you probably spoke of this in a former video, but what is the significance of the tools, and ladder? Is it because Jesus was a carpenter or is it related to the trade of the person laid to rest or the
    Romans and the crucifixion? The dice for the casting of lots? Is the ladder there representing the taking down of Our Lord’s body? Thanks. Another gorgeous place, so glad to see its being restored. Love that the sheep and goats are brought in as nature’s lawn mowers and fertilizers. 💕

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  2 года назад +2

      Yes it's the story of the crucifixion all details are in description box, the dice are 5 plus 4, representing the 9th hour Jesus died on the cross, beautiful ❤

    Oh how wonderful that you are allowing us to escape with you on these adventures to another place and time in history!! You are incredible!
    The old tombstones leaning over and some covered with the evidence of the decades of time itself lends an air of mystery and curiosity we can only imagine. The cemeteries of today lack the atmosphere of those of long ago.

    Whomever the artist was of those headstones really had a talent! I love seeing these relics from the 16th century. I can’t imagine what life was like back then. Amazing how the headstones have lasted this long. Some are 252 YEARS OLD!!! Wow.

    Amazing carvings with so much detail on the headstones and love the lettering on the old headstones. Is Byrne a popular name on Ireland, my great grandmother's maiden name was Bryne. Enjoyed the video. Sorry for missing the live. We're getting ready for a blizzard with 12 to 18 inches of snow and high winds. Thank you Sue, take care and God Bless ❤

    Hi Sue! Thanks for another great video and for explaining the significance of the sun and moon symbols. I had wondered what they represented. I know of a landowner in the Adelaide Hills who occasionally borrows a herd of goats to keep the grass and weeds in his paddock under control, and their fertiliser is a bonus. 🇦🇺 🇮🇪

    Miss Sue, isn't it amazing the history? A 1500's head stone. When we think about it, it was not long ago when Christ was here.
