      In the time of King's the court Jester was on of the only people who could be open and "strait forward' with the truth because it wasn't seen as confrontational when they did it.
      Sort of like how people add "lol" to the end of serious statements, or literally lol when making them in person, in order to ease the negative feeling they might cause.
      Comedy serves this same function, whereas the news is expected to be 100% serious, comedians have some leeway because of our expectations from them.
      Here's some source info:

    There's a pretty obvious answer as to why politics have become so divisive. Politicians from both sides, democrats and republicans, as well as the wealthy lobbyists and business friends of those politicians have done everything they can to keep us average Americans fighting over every issue they possibly can. As long as they keep us all fighting and arguing with each other, they can do whatever the hell they want. Ditto.

    • @Newsforthelolz
      @Newsforthelolz 7 лет назад +14

      Ryan Amberger I really disagree with this line of reasoning. For one thing it is overly conspiratorial, and falls in on its self easily (if business interests were behind it why is it that historically the wealthy tend to back one of the two parties over the other, Republican). Also, you get rid of individuals' agency: you're acting as if the common man isn't flawed. Maybe instead of some big conspiracy to suppress us, it's just us, citizens, who are flawed and create the kind of polarization we see today.

    • @Newsforthelolz
      @Newsforthelolz 7 лет назад +10

      Ryan Amberger The video points out that the Civil Rights Movement caused conservative people to collect in opposition to who ever supported it, which became the Liberals and Democrats. That's not conspiracy that just people acting on their prejudice

    • @artfuldodger5933
      @artfuldodger5933 7 лет назад +4

      I agree that there's no overarching conspiracy to keep the masses occupied. However, I do think the political and economic elite has allowed social issues to consume the popular discourse while economic debates are kept out of sight and out of mind, or painted as comically one-sided when really there is a serious conflict between two legitimate and popular ideologies. I don't think this was a collective effort; it was the result of many powerful people acting in their own (incidentally common) interests.

And I believe it is called Adam Ruins Everything election special. It looks like you can buy and download the episodes from Amazone.com (which is a legal legit online store), of course I am looking at the U.S.A version of the site. They might also include the election special as well. If so probably not until the episode airs on television first. I hope this was helpful.

    Okay what can we have a source for this

  • @vanyac6448
    @vanyac6448 Год назад +2

    Another cause of the partisan polarization: back when there were conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans, the political elite (like party bosses) had a lot more power over primaries. They funded primary and general election campaigns and often selected the candidates. These guys had a vested interest in having a broad appeal so that they can win elections, so ideologically diverse candidates and candidates who are team players and were good at compromising and working together tended to be sponsored by party bosses and tended to win primary and general elections. Then, after Watergate, this political elite was shackled. Direct primary elections, which had been gaining momentum since the Progressive Era, became almost universally the norm.
    Money raised by party bosses ended up being heavily restricted, so private money, like money from PACs, replaced it. So, the power of selecting party nominees fell away from party bosses with a vested interest in a broad appeal and cooperation across ideological lines to big businesses rich enough to fund PACs and the most activated people (which tend to be more ideologically extreme than the general population), who tend to donate more of their purse to political causes and are more likely to vote in primary elections than the general population. Hence, we have what we have today.

    One of the main points that politics suffer from is that people love to slap completely arbitrary labels all over the place as if it means something.
    Almost no one can have a discussion anymore without throwing a label around.
    And guess what?
    The second you label someone, in your mind, you now think of them an enemy and disregard everything they say or worse, attack them.

    The south voted mostly democratic until the 1990s. I agree that in the past people were able to make compromises in politics and were able to leave emotions out of it, but it wasn't because the civil Rights act was passed. It was because politicians learned that polarizing the public by exaggerating the amount of bigotry towards individuals because of their color or or sexual orientation or whatnot, made people more active in politics and so more likely to show up and vote.

  • @cryptkeeper08
    @cryptkeeper08 6 лет назад +2

    Partisan polarization is actually a visage, in general when the democrats and republicans want to get their collective big donors laws passed it's always bipartisan. But if it has to do with social issues they quickly play the divide game because it's great distraction from that war funding or spying bill they just passed.

      That has a chance of failing miserably, though. In Turkey, a three party coalition government coincided with a pretty bad economic crisis, which got a huge chunk of the voters scared enough of coalitions to vote for parties they're not 100% sure of just to keep the government from being a coalition in a time of peace.

      Republicans got a bunch of ignorant racists on their side thanks to the southern strategy and never really stopped playing that card to garner support.

      given the context of the civil rights act, of course it makes sense, but the civil rights act hadn't been brought up yet, and she didn't say "act".

    He says we won the 'Cold War' under the more bi-partisan system, but the Cold War ended nearly 40 yrs after the Civil Rights Act was passed and the polarization he outlined ensued...

    I will never understand how in America you have a liberal party, and a conservative party. I mean, how is that you only vote two right winged parties at the same time? Isn't usually one on the left, and other on the right?

      Conservative is traditional, especially in regards to religion, and liberal is more modern. Republicans are more conservative and democrats are more liberal.

      The U.S. was late joining both world wars. We joined on the winning sides on both occasions. After World War 2, the U.S. and the Soviet Union (also called the U.S.S.R.) began stockpiling weapons and supplies like fuel and food in what is known as the Cold War. There was no really serious fighting between the USSR and the US, so it was called the Cold War due to it being similar to the two countries just kinda staring at each other angrily. The USSR collapsed and became many different countries, the biggest one being Russia. The US didn't collapse, so we more or less won, making that World War 1 and 2 that we won, and the Cold War being war number 3 that we won

    But you see the negative effects of too many parties here in the U.K. The right wing is inherently advantaged because there are fewer right wing parties to choose from, whereas the left vote gets split.
