That's why I like this. I am a law abiding black veteran, husband, father, and gun owner who isn't on either side. I am for many stances on the political left and right. That being said, neither side is 100% "right". For my family's sake, I will never give up my guns, but I also feel there should be more consideration to ensuring those who oppose guns also have the right to a gun free existence. Not sure how it would work without a gun free America, but that's not my problem. I've got mine.

Many of the laws in effect today were written by white politicians to target and marginalize black people. This is why race discussions in America are usually between black and white.

I haven't seen the whole episode but I hope they talk about this. Before the Wounded Knee massacre the government told them to give up their weapons first. Also, Koreans defended their homes and businesses in the 1980's when the police weren't going to during a black out. This is a multi-race issue no one talks about.

The people whose descendants largely live on reservations today were no more Native American than I am.
This isn't controversial, its just how things are. This video doesn't try to persuade folks to arm up or to disarm. It simply portrays how different folks are treated differently under the same laws.
As someone who fully supports the second amendment I don't feel like this is too controversial. They're pretty much saying all laws should be applied the same to both white and minority citizens. I think that every responsible American over 21 should own and consider conceal carrying a firearm, including (and possibly especially) minorities. No matter what laws we make there are going to still be people willing to break those laws. If you you are legally allowed to do so in your state you can conceal carry and contribute to keeping your family and neighbors safe.

The data shows that it is more often a "street" drug in black communities, while whites use it more in their homes, even though the use is pretty much the same (percentage wise) in both communities. But who goes to jail more for it? Sure you could argue, "well then black people should just do their drugs at home" but that still misses the point. The police is simply looking for it more in black communities.
You know what's a shame. This excerpt is supposed to be dealing with a racial issue, not a political one. As a black man in a southern state I can attest that this is problem is very real. In Falcon and winter soldier there was a scene where Falcon slightly raised his voice at bucky, the police then pulled up and asked if there was a problem several times. she was sentenced to 20 years in prison and only after a later appeal was she allowed to transition to house arrest after serving three years of her life in prison for executing her rights as a gun owner. she also never left the house, she retrieved her gun from her car in the garage AFTER trying to escape the house.

In some cases, that is true, but at least where I am in the country if you get caught being a felon anywhere near a gun they will slap dat ass with a mandatory minimum sentence for 5 years. They left out facts with the case of Marissa Alexander. 1) First of all her husband, who was a black man, was able to walk away free from the ordeal. No punishment. If this was a racial issue he would have gotten at LEAST ten years if not more. Because, well he's black. Especially since out justice system is far harsher on men than they are woman. 2) She actually went to jail because she didn't kill her husband. Had she shot and killed her husband the stand your ground laws would have kicked in. But instead she gave him a warning shot which at the time stand your ground didn't cover. It had less to do with race and more to do with a victim blaming society. Though I don't see how sexism is much better than racism.
4:40 left out the fact it's illegal to fire "warning shots". You can only use deadly force if you are in immediate danger of grievous bodily harm or death. Firing a warning shot means you weren't in immediate danger.
It an also put your life in more great danger, because then that gives the person that you shot at, now the right to shoot back at you. Then they can claim self-defense.

Many people own guns for many reasons but you just finished showing that very few guns were found during ten years of stop and frisk. Violence is not rampant, violent crime has been declining for decades and is very low. If violence was rampant a lot less people would be advocating for gun control.
I've looked into this before (it's why I clicked on the video) and things were simplified to fit a six and a half minute video, but what was presented was basically true. The NRA, who claims to fight for the rights of all Americans, was notably silent when Castille was killed. That was everything they say they fear: the government literally killing a man for legally owning a firearm, but they expended more energy teaching countries that do not have a "second amendment" how to protect it. The point isn't "gun control good/bad", it's that when we have these debates, we're never getting the full picture. Whether you support these laws in theory, in practice they're being applied unevenly. The same goes for drug laws, for a lot of the same reasons. Adam cites all his sources, check them before you shut out the ideas, and check the sources of anyone telling you this video is wrong.

The issue was that the NRA didn't want to tie their horse to another case that could very likely blow up in their faces. Castille had a controlled substance on him, marijuana, that murkied the waters a bit on whether he should be carrying, and the traffic stop wasn't as clear cut as as the ambush on police or the shooting of the Australian woman that came after. Though I would agree that the case should have fit their criteria, that is only in hind sight after more information was released.

If they were baked, how much of it could be trusted? It would look just as bad if if they found out later the gun owner was doing something suspect. It just didn't turn out that way. once the dash cam was released, they should have been more vocal in his defense but by then the damage was already done.

Why is everyone in the comments hating on Adam for trying to educate? He's not the one that finds the facts, he does the performance. The research team for the show does. And they are human beings who make mistakes.

If the video was about police brutslity or racism in the police service, then opinion aside, the case is an example at least purporting to prove something. In this video the argument being made was that black gun control rights arent being fought for when the castile case had nothing to do with gun rights. Noone questioned his right to conceal carry, it was barely questioned whether he did anything wrong. The question in that case was whether with the information the officer had at the time, with the amount of time to think he had, was he justifed in making the mistake he made. That does not touch upon the question of gun rights and therefore, the NRA have no reason to get involved, they dont campaign for anyone who gets in trouble while a gun is on their person, they campaign on whether someones right to bare arms is being infinged upon. If you read the comments, stop and frisk doesnt seem to be a focal point for outrage. People will argue over it being a valid point but when it comes to people disliking the video, it isnt a major issue. People are more willing to engage with honest actors. The video isnt honest, the video misrepresents what stand your ground is, then raises an example while leaving out key info about the case. It later raises a point about castile, which everyone knows gets people riled up, where it has no relevance to the argument they are claiming to advance, while taking the time to aim at the NRA. Regarding the rest of the video, given the level of dishonesty on these points, to many, its not worth engaging with adam as even if he does make a correct argument, his track record for deceptive use of info leaves people unable to trust his use of info even when hes being fair. It doesnt flatten the argument as a whole, it just means people will have this argument elsewhere and leave adam out of it as he just muddys the water. The video is actually quite neutral, as it's not in favor of gun control or gun rights, just showing how BOTH have been unfair towards black people, and last I checked, equality is a bipartisan issue.
i believe the problem people have with this is that race actually plays no part in a gun control movement and many people on the right feel like the left is extremely generalizing and leaving out crucial details with their own examples in order to shape it into their own personal narrative.

I haven't seen the whole episode but I hope they talk about this. Before the Wounded Knee massacre the government told them to give up their weapons first. Also, Koreans defended their homes and businesses in the 1980's when the police weren't going to during a black out. This is a multi-race issue no one talks about.

It’s funny you say this, as this episode literally took no sides on the gun debate.
This isn't controversial, its just how things are. This video doesn't try to persuade folks to arm up or to disarm. It simply portrays how different folks are treated differently under the same laws.
As someone who fully supports the second amendment I don't feel like this is too controversial. They're pretty much saying all laws should be applied the same to both white and minority citizens. I think that every responsible American over 21 should own and consider conceal carrying a firearm, including (and possibly especially) minorities. No matter what laws we make there are going to still be people willing to break those laws. If you you are legally allowed to do so in your state you can conceal carry and contribute to keeping your family and neighbors safe.

The data shows that it is more often a "street" drug in black communities, while whites use it more in their homes, even though the use is pretty much the same (percentage wise) in both communities. But who goes to jail more for it? Sure you could argue, "well then black people should just do their drugs at home" but that still misses the point. The police is simply looking for it more in black communities.
You know what's a shame. This excerpt is supposed to be dealing with a racial issue, not a political one. As a black man in a southern state I can attest that this is problem is very real. They left out facts with the case of Marissa Alexander.
1) First of all her husband, who was a black man, was able to walk away free from the ordeal. No punishment. If this was a racial issue he would have gotten at LEAST ten years if not more. Because, well he's black. Especially since out justice system is far harsher on men than they are woman.
2) She actually went to jail because she didn't kill her husband. Had she shot and killed her husband the stand your ground laws would have kicked in. But instead she gave him a warning shot which at the time stand your ground didn't cover. It had less to do with race and more to do with a victim blaming society.

I've looked into this before (it's why I clicked on the video) and things were simplified to fit a six and a half minute video, but what was presented was basically true. The NRA, who claims to fight for the rights of all Americans, was notably silent when Castille was killed. That was everything they say they fear: the government literally killing a man for legally owning a firearm, but they expended more energy teaching countries that do not have a "second amendment" how to protect it.
The point isn't "gun control good/bad", it's that when we have these debates, we're never getting the full picture. Whether you support these laws in theory, in practice they're being applied unevenly. The same goes for drug laws, for a lot of the same reasons.
Adam cites all his sources, check them before you shut out the ideas, and check the sources of anyone telling you this video is wrong.

The issue was that the NRA didn't want to tie their horse to another case that could very likely blow up in their faces. Castille had a controlled substance on him, marijuana, that murkied the waters a bit on whether he should be carrying, and the traffic stop wasn't as clear cut as as the ambush on police or the shooting of the Australian woman that came after. Though I would agree that the case should have fit their criteria, that is only in hind sight after more information was released.

If they were baked, how much of it could be trusted? It would look just as bad if if they found out later the gun owner was doing something suspect. It just didn't turn out that way. once the dash cam was released, they should have been more vocal in his defense but by then the damage was already done.

The contest to the castile question is simple, its not relevant. If the video was about police brutslity or racism in the police service, then opinion aside, the case is an example at least purporting to prove something. In this video the argument being made was that black gun control rights arent being fought for when the castile case had nothing to do with gun rights. Noone questioned his right to conceal carry, it was barely questioned whether he did anything wrong. The question in that case was whether with the information the officer had at the time, with the amount of time to think he had, was he justifed in making the mistake he made. That does not touch upon the question of gun rights and therefore, the NRA have no reason to get involved, they dont campaign for anyone who gets in trouble while a gun is on their person, they campaign on whether someones right to bare arms is being infinged upon.
If you read the comments, stop and frisk doesnt seem to be a focal point for outrage. People will argue over it being a valid point but when it comes to people disliking the video, it isnt a major issue.
People are more willing to engage with honest actors. The video isnt honest, the video misrepresents what stand your ground is, then raises an example while leaving out key info about the case. It later raises a point about castile, which everyone knows gets people riled up, where it has no relevance to the argument they are claiming to advance, while taking the time to aim at the NRA. Regarding the rest of the video, given the level of dishonesty on these points, to many, its not worth engaging with adam as even if he does make a correct argument, his track record for deceptive use of info leaves people unable to trust his use of info even when hes being fair.

Its like an argument over the situation in palestine where a video just presents a pile of israeli propaganda. It doesnt mean there isnt a discussion to be had over it, it just means this info is bad and to take a delicate situation and treat it so badly is worthy of your character being questioned.

We dont like it when people start spreading lies about northern ireland to score political points. People died and are at risk of dying if that situation blows up again, agitation should be avoided unless you have serious points to make. Walkin gin and claiming the journalist killed there a couple of months ago was an ulster unionist murderer is going to piss people off.
Therefore i can understand given the scale of anger displayed by the blm movement, fanning those flames with lies is a terrible thing to do. The BLM movement have enough problems with jumping on cases where the info doesnt back up the claim they are trying to make, what they need is cases that actually prove what they believe they see in their communities, not false alarms that just make people view them as the boys who cried wolf.
I also dont support stop and search, i dont think treating everyone as if they are potentially guilty of a crime without due cause is in the spirit of the law. Even if you are in the process of committing a crime, it doesnt mean you are likely guilty of a different crime. If i catch you breaking the speed limit, that doesnt justify my search of your house for stolen goods and or cold kidnap cases. Jaywalking (dumb crime) doesnt mean you are likely to be carrying a knife, i dont think the police should have the right to frisk people on grounds like that. Spotting a large knife shaped lump under clothing or movements to conceal an item from police view would be due cause, not the fact that yopu happen to have committed a potentially unrelated crime.

This is not true. More whites are arrested than blacks blacks for gun violence. But blacks are imprisoned for gun violence at a disproportionate rate compared to whites, not because of racism, but because they commit gun violence crimes at a disproportionate rate. [1]
Legislators don't design gun control policies to discriminate against blacks. If someone breaks the law, they get arrested, regardless of race.

I love how everyone in the comments keep going on about this being leftist or liberal propaganda, completely missing the point of the video. The video is actually quite neutral, as it's not in favor of gun control or gun rights, just showing how BOTH have been unfair towards black people, and last I checked, equality is a bipartisan issue.
i believe the problem people have with this is that race actually plays no part in a gun control movement and many people on the right feel like the left is extremely generalizing and leaving out crucial details with their own examples in order to shape it into their own personal narrative.

I am always amazed when people talk about gun control like it can be piecemeal. It has to be enforced equally, everywhere, or it is useless. The system has to be federal, mandatory, and policy un-biased. However, I'm Canadian and biased.... so best of luck.

I don't pretend I've fact checked everything here, but I think that getting both sides angry at the same thing, makes them question their own beliefs, instead of just getting mad at the other. This let's people open their minds to both sides. I started on one side, ended up on the other.
