"So there I was at the mercy of three monstrous trolls. And they were all arguing amongst themselves about how they were going to cook us. Whether it be turned on a spit or whether they should sit on us one by one and squash us into jelly. They spent so much time arguing the witherto's and whyfor's that the sun's first light cracked open over the top of the trees... Poof! And turned them all into stone!" Fun fact: this movie was animated in Japan. I first saw this as a kid a LONG time ago. Always thought that the designs were really neat. Now I totally see the Japanese animator influence.
gandalfs actual nature is never really hinted at unless you dive deeply into the depths of the silmarillion. this scene shows a flash of his true power. just casually makes the sun come up when he wants it to.
If he can do that then why couldn’t he do that in the LOTRs? And don’t give me the “oh because Aru Elluvitar had planned all of this” because that’s just deus ex machina crap.
@@michaelpowell5266 well they cemented their legacy with their whole dam line-up especially all the holiday classics that they play every year but guarenteed that if you talked to someone who grew up in the 90's and back if you asked about the Hobbit movie......this would be their answer
i much prefer the live action version where bilbo has to deter the trolls from eating the dwarfs by saying that the dwarves have parasites. "Yeah he's got worms in his tubes."
it's good that everyone got out alive but like...bilbo sold the dwarves out. He signaled that they were there when he could have been silent and given them time to run. Maybe would have even gotten away cause he was too small
The Trolls were already talking about looking around for others. Bilbo was warning them to run. He of course, could have gone about it a bit more clever. "OH! DON'T BOTHER MASTER TROLL! I'M ALL ALONE! NO ONE ELSE OUT THERE!" Or something like that. Bilbo does just hide afterwards, which is kinda shitty. As I recall in the book it's not that Gandalf can simple *summon* the sun, he actually hides, and uses his magic to keep the trolls arguing amongst themselves, until the sun rises.
Because these three trolls are confirmed by Tolkien himself to be named Tom Bert and William I assume in this version William is the one that grabs Bilbo Bert is the one with the tusks and eyepatch and Tom is the one wearing the brown hat
It makes perfect sense when you consider that a small group of Japanese artists were on a time table to produce over an hour of hand-drawn, animated content for a western media company. It took Peter Jackson several years to craft the LOTR trilogy along with the Hobbit films and he had the benefit of hundreds of people working with him along with millions of dollars financed by the studio.
Can I just say the acting in this is kinda bad. I can except the no so great animation (after all this is a TV movie we're talking about) but the acting is something different

So this is an anime?
@@kaiportercrafton2152 rankin bass animation was outsourced from japan. Same goes for the stop motion xmas movies.
The company that would go on to become Studio Ghibli were the animators.
As well as their The Last Unicorn movie.

I love the design of these trolls. They look so brutish and menacing.
I personally don’t think they needed the tusks.
Yet they're so scary
I respect that, I kind of feel you on that one a bit. One of them didn't have them I think. To add a little variability. @@nathanboswell6611

This is just so hard to beat, just as enchanting now as when it first came out, I still have the album & the song’s are literally unforgettable !
I wish Rankin/Bass was still making projects because ever one of their projects was absolutely beautiful and a joy to watch
At least Rankin-Bass cemented it's legacy with Thundercats, between 1985 and 1990. That's R-B's superhero classic!!!

Gandalf: [commits triple homicide] *EXCELLENT!*
Trollicide
Well they tried killing the dwarves
I love the "excellent" at the end too, especially with the beard stroking lol.
I love the overall animation style so much... Very the last unicorn (1982) style
Same studio.
I saw this so much at a Young age that this is the default look of trolls I always refer to
It's worth noting that these 3 trolls are actually named Tom Bert and William
1:17 Gandalf: Dawn take you all! And be stone to you! (Raises up the sun)
Bert: How Did the Morning Come Soon! 1:29
This part was super creepy back in the day.
"excellent"

Now that's a supper

seriosly, there are not so much nocturnal cretaures that turn to stone at day light.
This movie was goated
From darkness they came and died in the light
Was Gandalf trying to copy the announcer on Mortal Kombat when he said, “Excellent”? Lol 1:42
Flawless victory for him.
Shoulda told those trolls there was plenty to eat in smaug's lair
Trolls of middle-earth.
race: troll.
ability: strength💪.
weapon: knife🔪.
strength: night🌃.
weakness: sun🌞 (turns them into stone🪨).
What the blazes
1:39 they got stoned
That’s got to be the worst case of getting stoned I have ever seen. They failed to pay attention to the time!
Can the trolls see Bilbo invisible?
After reading the book, this version makes little sense and skips most of what happened.
It nakes it seem like Gandalf caused the sun to rise. Ehich isn't a terrible shortcut, tbh.
This, along with plenty of other scenes, had to be condensed so the whole thing would fit within the runtime of a TV movie
