I saw this movie in the theaters when it first premiered. One of my first reactions on seeing this scene was anger at the other “English” on the street who simply stand there and watched a group of jerks bullying men (and their women and children) knowing they won’t fight back for religious reasons. The locals allowed the bullying to happen and then reacted with surprise and even some indignation when a man they think is Amish fights back. I met Nora during the filming of Crimes of the Heart where she coached Sissy Spacek, Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Tess Harper to speak with the Southern accent. Nora also helped Tom Hank in Forest Gump, Nora Dunfee is the old lady sitting on a bench with Tom Hank at the end of the film when she told Forest that where he was going he didn’t need to catch the bus. Nora Dunfee was a very sweet person, her work in Hollywood became intachable, many she taught were nominated for an Oscar with a winning best actor in Forest Gump. Mrs Dunfee and her husband perished in a car crash in 1993.

This had to be the best movie of their careers . Kelly McGillis and Harrison Ford had lightning going between the the two of them . Well directed film .
I love when the Amish man says "It's not our way," and Harrison Ford, despite trying to fit in with the Amish, says "It's mine." At the end of the day he is not truly an Amish man, not because he belongs to some other tribe, but because he is an individual who acts according to what he personally thinks is right. He respects that the Amish have their own culture, but he can't bring himself to go along with it when it disagrees with his own moral convictions.
When you look at actors like William Shatner, Adam West, or Mark Hamill even, neither of those guys were able to get out of the character that made them famous in the first place. Han Solo may and Indiana Jones may be the roles that Harrison Ford is known the most for, but he rose above it all. He is the superstar we all know and love.
He's pretty limited in the roles he plays as well. He was just well suited for most of the roles he took instead of getting into any crappy movie that came along. The biggest stretch he took in a drama role was in What Lies Beneath and another where he played a lawyer with a brain injury.
teejay Trujillo Horseshit. You've never seen The Mosquito Coast (1986)? Still Ford's best performance? And the film you referred to btw was Regarding Henry (1991).
I loved this part. These bullies NEVER fight alone. They ONLY become "true warriors with big balls" when they are surrounded by other losers. They NEVER fight alone. When they see what it is really going to happen to them after their actions, they cry like little girls...
Something I just realized, watching this movie again, is that Book doesn’t just beat these guys up because they’re mistreating the Amish. In the previous scene, Book makes that threatening phone call to Schaeffer after he finds out that Carter has been killed. At that moment, Book goes into a bloodthirsty revenge mode - and he takes his anger out on these guys.
They learned several things that day... Never mess with Han Solo, Isildur's heir, or Karl from Die Hard. And most importantly, NEVER waste good ice cream.
"Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man" - Kenny Rogers song. There are bullies who specialize in terrorizing people who are too weak, won't, or not allowed to fight back. And the only way to stand up to a bully is unfortunately, to stand up to them.
Oh the irony, Alexander Gudonov(future bad guy in Die Hard) and Viggo Mortensen(future movies include Eastern Promises and A History of Violence) sitting by doing nothing
It's a shame, blonde got bullied so much that he snapped and went off with Hans Gruber and attacked Nakatomi Tower and got killed by John McClane. R.I.P. Karl.
It all makes sense now...that guy got ice cream on his face, meets hans gruber, and fights john mcclain all because of pent up rage. How did I miss it before...
The old guy was a resident and his next line was something "like this is bad for business." Throwing stones at them was also a pass time when the convoy were leaving church, the kids all lined the street and traditionally threw stones with no consequence for their behaviour until a young girl was killed. Western double standards, the Amish would not have been allowed the same behaviour. One of my favourite lines from the old Amish is, Be carefull out there amongst them English.
@Mark Richards The excuse was, but the old guy with the waking stick said " I never seen anything like it in all my days",( then Alexander Gudanov said " he's from ohio" ) then the old guy with the stick said " it's bad for business".

Harrison Ford's character: "You're lucky 'Goldilocks' over here didn't bring his AUG."
"No one kills him but me."
Right, he’s pissed after John McClain killed his brother & took his machine gun. Good Day to You!
I was THINKING the same thing! rofl!
Liked that actor. Died way too young
How did they make it look like he really hit the horse
I love when the Amish man says "It's not our way," and Harrison Ford, despite trying to fit in with the Amish, says "It's mine." At the end of the day he is not truly an Amish man, not because he belongs to some other tribe, but because he is an individual who acts according to what he personally thinks is right. He respects that the Amish have their own culture, but he can't bring himself to go along with it when it disagrees with his own moral convictions.
You’re right
“ he’s from Ohio “ the way he said it gets to me every time. 😂
Watched it last night, and the beauty of this film hasn't faded. Harrison Ford's stellar performance captured my heart 😍😘👏👏👏💚
He didn't get hit by a Bible, but he got hit by a Good Book.
LMAO 🤣
Along with the iconic roles he has portrayed, he is a master carpenter and pilot who was once a roadie for The Doors. A hell of a resume...
J Calhoun,
I loved most of Harrison Ford's movies, but I wouldn't want to fly with him or anyone else right now. lol
Stone David Mark Hamill has some pretty amazing range, he went from Luke Skywalker to the Joker for goodness' sake.
@@kurtrivero368 Interesting that you cited, with good reason, ‘Mosquito Coast’ -- The other film Harrison did w/Peter Weir 👍🏻
That last quote was pretty funny, though it cut out at the very end. He said: "he's from Ohio, my cousin."
"But it's my way." Fantastic line and delivery.
I loved this part. These bullies NEVER fight alone. They ONLY become "true warriors with big balls" when they are surrounded by other losers. They NEVER fight alone. When they see what it is really going to happen to them after their actions, they cry like little girls...
The movie was filmed in Lancaster County, PA where plenty of people are also like that in real life.
"You're making a mistake!" Good line it's like the sound of the rattle before the ultimate strike!
So many great scenes in this movie. This was certainly one of them.
"Townies. I hate these guys."
See the bewildered bullies taking care of their mate; Weir put tenderness there. Unnerving to have nuances of cause and effect. First class direction.
“... he’s from Ohio.” Best come back line.
This scene sicked Shaffer on him. They knew where he was at.
"He's bleedin'" -- Yes my dear, that is always a danger when one behaves like an asshole in public. /sarcasm
When your only fighting strategy is assuming your victim won't fight back...you're going to wind up eating soft food for a month.
Every time I see this scene, I often say to those punks, "don't you guys have anything better to do like, oh I don't know, eat that ice cream?"
Love when bullies get bent over.
I just LOVE 'feel-good' movies--and this scene is certainly one of my all-time favorites.
Love Viggo’s face as Harrison walks back.
The look on books face when he knocks off his hat.
What a coward of a man, he knows damn well that Amish people will not retaliate.
"Never seen anything like it in all my years!".
"He ist from Ohio,".
Makes sense.
The way to fight against bullying is to stand up and fight them
Something I just realized, watching this movie again, is that Book doesn’t just beat these guys up because they’re mistreating the Amish. In the previous scene, Book makes that threatening phone call to Schaeffer after he finds out that Carter has been killed. At that moment, Book goes into a bloodthirsty revenge mode - and he takes his anger out on these guys.
To the bullies: You miss with the Amish. You miss with the cop
Where are the cops they need in town?
I WOULD HAVE SNAPPED THEIR BADBOY NECKS AND USED THEIR RELATIVES
FOR TARGET PRACTICE.
Im pretty sure Karl and Viggo Mortensen would take those guys apart if they wanted to.
"You watch them English, Book..."
I wish they used the "Indiana Jones punch" sound effect when he hits him!
It came out for a split millisecond when he split his nose at 1:28. Lol!
Mokkari77 nah, the way he shot the guy with the huge sword and that look on his face afterwards.
They learned several things that day...
Never mess with Han Solo, Isildur's heir, or Karl from Die Hard.
And most importantly, NEVER waste good ice cream.
This is why you don't fucking mess with people who are different.
You’re right
This is still his best movie. Brilliant performance.
"Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man" - Kenny Rogers song.
There are bullies who specialize in terrorizing people who are too weak, won't, or not allowed to fight back. And the only way to stand up to a bully is unfortunately, to stand up to them.
I agree
That bully had no idea...😆😆😆😆😆😆😀 I especially liked it when the old man said, " I've never seen anytime like it in all my years.😆😆😆!
"He's from Ohio." LOL
The guy in the green shirt & yellow cap did push his luck too far, I think its hilarious when Harrison Ford knocks the crap out of him! 🤣🤣🤣
1:06 Look theres the villain from die hard, guy in the back from lord of the rings, they became badass's too but 1st they learn from the FORD
A bully is only tuff until someone stands up to him.
Oh the irony, Alexander Gudonov(future bad guy in Die Hard) and Viggo Mortensen(future movies include Eastern Promises and A History of Violence) sitting by doing nothing
cityofchamps66 not Viggo was also in Lord of the Rings and Captain Fantastic
..not irony kid.. fate !! ..and harrison would become jack ryan ! and the president in air force one
Irony? They’re actors. 🤣
Gudonov later killed himself after Die hard ...
@@colintraveller "Godunov's (not Gudonov's) death was determined to be due to complications from hepatitis secondary to chronic alcoholism."
I've heard it said it's always the quiet ones you have to look out for .
It's a shame, blonde got bullied so much that he snapped and went off with Hans Gruber and attacked Nakatomi Tower and got killed by John McClane. R.I.P. Karl.
Killed by Carl Winslow actually
It all makes sense now...that guy got ice cream on his face, meets hans gruber, and fights john mcclain all because of pent up rage. How did I miss it before...
Tourist: I've never seen anything like that in my life.
Another tourist: He's from Ohio.
😂🤣😆
The old guy was a resident and his next line was something "like this is bad for business."
Throwing stones at them was also a pass time when the convoy were leaving church, the kids all lined the street and traditionally threw stones with no consequence for their behaviour until a young girl was killed.
Western double standards, the Amish would not have been allowed the same behaviour.
One of my favourite lines from the old Amish is, Be carefull out there amongst them English.
@Mark Richards
The excuse was, but the old guy with the waking stick said " I never seen anything like it in all my days",( then Alexander Gudanov said " he's from ohio" ) then the old guy with the stick said " it's bad for business".
You know sometimes that's all a bully understands....a good beat down!....sad but true.
Not the least bit sad to me.
Aragorn upgrades his melee skills by watching Han Solo in action
well done, Jone Book
Yeah, who the hell would EVER wanna fuck with Han Solo who became Indiana Jones who decided to be Blade Runner who eventually became Jack Ryan?
there is nothing better than beating a bully. you can do to them everything you want without feeling guilty
Plus, it exposes Book's location to the cops that are trying to kill him and the boy.
That's crucial to the plot. And the theme.
The bullies are just weak cowards in disguise. Remember that.
He'd just found out his friend, a fellow cop, was killed by corrupt cops. This was not a good day to get on his bad side.
Nothing like watching Harrison Ford handle Viggos lightwork.
Simpler times.
I'm pretty sure even Jesus liked that scene. 😁
I am pretty sure they wouldn't have done that if they knew Karl had experience from Nakatomi Plaza
