But you're not supposed to be answering the question yourself, you're supposed to be stating how other people answered the question. I can't imagine anyone a partner actually replying to "I love you" with "I hate you", but I assumed some people would give that answer because it's the opposite of what the narrator said. That's why "I hate you" is a much better answer than those extremely generic guesses, even though those guesses would be more realistic.
