🤦 I sent a crew to Minmus to collect science from orbit, and this video reminded me of the EVA science kit which I had completely forgot that they added to the game. Oh well... Next time I'm in the neighbourhood, I'll have to grab that science.

Been following your beginners playlist and gotta say, your videos are incredibly helpful and just so easy to watch and follow.
I sent a crew to the mun but mistakenly used a lander can instead of a command module and so now they're stuck in an elliptical orbit with an apoapsis nearing the mun and a periapsis nearing 95k. I'm finding it INSANE to pull off this rescue! I'm sure I'll get it with the skills I've gained from your videos!

I hope this video helps. The easiest place to get a rendezvous with an object in a very elliptical orbit is near that orbits periapsis. Good luck.

@@MikeAben thanks a ton. I made a couple of attempts last night but couldn't shed the relative velocity fast enough without pushing the distance to hundreds of kilometers. Any tips from there?

@@shannonstough7190 It helps to have the planes of the two orbits close to the same before attempting the rendezvous. When creating the rendezvous, have your orbit after the burn be as close as possible to the target's. Even with this, you still are likely to get a high encounter speed. My only advice after this is really watch the intercept distance and time to intercept closely. If the distance goes up, or the time gets more than a couple of minutes, stop burning and let yourself get closer. Experiment to figure out which way to burn to reduce the distance further. Again stop if you start pushing the distance up or the time gets more than a couple of minutes. It is doable. Quicksave ahead of time so you can try again if needed.

@@MikeAben update: I GOT THEM!! I got them somewhere about halfway to the periapsis by CHASING it with a slightly overbuilt rocket. Then turned around, landed, and now they're on minmus (with enough delta V to get back, in a proper command module this time)
      Thanks for the help!

Not going to lie, I never noticed that shoutout to Chris Hadfield's infamous 2001 spacewalk within the contract section until you read through it.
Perhaps I should start reading the flavour text more, that is a interesting little easter egg to a moment that ended up being pretty critical how today's EVA gear is designed and maintained.

Thank you for another highly detailed and focused contract tutorial, solid content as always. Do you have / would you consider making material about using engineers to build stuff in space? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of material on that out there.

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  2 года назад +2

That is certainly a possibility in the future. I don't have a tutorial on the topic, but it is something I've done in live streams. I'll dig up a link.

I have this weird problem where I get good at one thing and bad at another, then those flip. I used to be really good at getting into orbit but horrible at rendezvous. Now I can easily get a rendezvous closer than 100m but I can barely get into orbit and when I do, I end up with a very elliptical shape.
I may just be putting on too much weight and not enough thrust or fuel. im still not sure of the exact numbers on how much Dv I need to do certain things, or how the thrust to weight ratio affected the space craft.

    • @MikeAben

I typically budget 3600 m/s of vacuum dV for a low orbit. A launch TWR of 1.3 to 1.35 at sea level works well. With a typical booster, the TWR will naturally grow during your ascent, though for the upper stage (the last 1000 to 1200 m/s) you only need a vacuum TWR around 1.
I've got a couple of videos that go over this in a lot more detail. Just follow the playlist link in the description.

I did a Mun rendezvous but I didn't dock because I didn’t need to because I could just EVA back to the Command Module.

The rocket is way too big, when i launch it, i cant steer correctly without flipping into the direction im trying to go to.
Plus, when i did the Munar insertion burn, i already had lost all my fuel.

Sounds like you should be practicing getting into orbit more efficiently. That's half the battle, but it takes practice.
