      Could the White Sox become the worst team ever? Even worse than the Cleveland Spiders?

    • @alexlewis37
      @alexlewis37 Месяц назад +13

      @@BendyDH the Cleveland Spiders won 13% (20-134) of their games. Even if the white Sox lose all 59 remaining games, they'll finish 27-135, which is a 16.6% win rate.

    • @biscuitz7422
      @biscuitz7422 Месяц назад

      @@BendyDH The White Sox, as of today (27-77), have the 6th worst winning percentage of any team since 1900 at 25.96% - the low point in that time frame (the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics) is only 23.53%, so there's a non-zero chance the White Sox could catch that mark if they gut the team during the second half of the season lol. As Alex mentioned, there are some dire late 19th century teams (three teams with 130+ game seasons won less than 20% of their games including the notorious 1899 Spiders) which the Sox have little chance of catching, luckily for them. To match the Spiders, Chicago would've needed to go 21-141 which is near impossible pace in the modern game.
      If we limit our discussion to more modern teams (the Divisional era stretches back to 56 years to 1969, so a good timeframe), the White Sox are currently the bottom of the barrel. The 2003 Tigers with a 26.54% win rate (a final record of 43-119) are pretty close to that mark, as are the 2018 Orioles (47-115 or 29.01%) and 2019 Tigers (47-114 or 29.19%) but they are the only 4 Divisional era teams to win less than 30% of their games. For further context, last year's A's finished 2 games above the 30% threshold with the next closest Royals just under 35%, so we're talking dire territory here lmao :P

    • @BendyDH
      @BendyDH Месяц назад

      @biscuitz7422 Месяц назад +1

      @@BendyDH More or less, yeah. Going 16 - 42 in the final stretch would tie the 2003 Tigers, so anything worse than that would do the trick!
      In fact, if they can manage to accrue 5 extra losses for an 11 - 47 end to the season, their 38 - 124 record would be enough to get them below those 1916 A's. 'tis perhaps a bit unlikely, but might as well dream big :D

      When he said that, I immediately got curious to look him up. Good catch. Back then, they only had the one award so there was always a chance it went to some AL stud, like a Whitey Ford or Early Wynn type. My guess is Jolly didn't think to look at the previous iterations of franchises for Cy Young, as that award is relatively young. (Although he did know to include Newk for the Dodgers' count.)
      One sneaky pick for the MVP round is Minnesota, since the Twins' history also includes the first Washington Senators franchise. Walter Johnson must have picked up a couple, along with the old-timers like Rice, Goslin, Cronin, etc. Not sure the total, though, as the Twins MVP well was dry throughout the 80s and 90s.

    Instead of matching answers canceling each other out, you should have however many contestants with the same answer split the points. I feel like this would take a ton of random luck out of the whole thing and also create some incentive to go for the biggest answers without just “playing defense”

    • @geekimusprime
      @geekimusprime Месяц назад +3

      But then they’d all just go for the top answers instead of more obscure answers. It’s an added layer to the game if they have to avoid overlapping answers.

    • @mattsowers8145
      @mattsowers8145 Месяц назад +3

      It is literally the core game mechanic that adds strategy into scattergories.
      The point of the double-up cancelling out is to encourage more creative responses. In a split methodology, it would incentivize going with the most obvious answers because the outcomes are either:
      - No one else guesses and I get all those delicious points
      - One or two others guess the same answer, but I still get some
      But with how lopsided the potential point values are for some of the "obvious" answers to these questions, it would encourage playing it safe because worst case scenario everyone gets the same amount of points. But the worst case scenario is you do not guess it and your opponent gets everything.
      Playing defense mostly occurs when someone is in the lead and trying to protect their margin. Going with the split rule would encourage that from question one
      Which at that point just makes it a trivia competition. And if you are looking for videos in that style, they already do them

    • @coreybarnofsky4196
      @coreybarnofsky4196 Месяц назад

      @@mattsowers8145that’s all fine and dandy but in the last round BBD won on nothing but pure luck, he didn’t have better or more obscure answers than Ryan or Jake. Why should Ryan have no shot to win because he happened to overlap with the 3rd contestant more? Not to mention the way this works is already nothing like scattergories because the most you can get in real scattergories is 2 points per answer for an alliterative first and last name. They’ve already strayed from the true formula and you would still be penalized for duplicate answers

    • @mattsowers8145
      @mattsowers8145 Месяц назад

      @@coreybarnofsky4196 saying BBD won on pure luck is just nonsense. In his first guess of the giants, he gets 10 for the current and 4 for the historic. And then with his guess of the rangers, specifically calls out that it is the only "not old" franchise he wrote down. Meaning he clearly had a strategy
      And then right after that, he guesses the cardinals, literally called out as a blocker when Ryan also had them because that would have been (under your rules) a wash or worth 10.5 points which would have been massive
      To your point on "why should Ryan have no shot to win because he happened to overlap with the 3rd contestant more?", the answer is because it is scattergories
      Yes, they added in the point change. But if you remove the double-up cancel then you would absolutely have to change the name
      Because at that point, it would have absolutely nothing to do with the parent game
