I felt a bit almost stressed in keeping up with all releases of all these great labels. It resulted in my general love for cinema suffering.
I started to cut down on it heavily, but also catch myself diving back in when f.e. I see a bunch of cool releases by radiance, eureka in a short time.
I really gotta tell myself that a film might still be as great when i „just“ get a standard version, not the prime collector’s deluxe of said film.
Plus: i realized f.e. That there will always be an even greater release on the horizon - prime example i was so delighted as i got the scarlet box of hellraiser and felt almost let down when the gorgeous 4k came out (that i did not buy)

You wait until you have kids in the mix . You definitely won’t keep up … but it’s only for a limited time . I’ll get back to my favourite hobby soon enough. You do a good job Elliot , you are very articulate , so don’t put yourself down on that front . Just watch the films you are interested in , there are 100’s of RUclipsrs reviewing the mainstream . Take care buddy

As soon as you start collecting films out of peer pressure or to impress people, you're wasting time, money, and will reach burnout way quicker.
Also, opinions on movies shouldn't matter. I hate the prequels, but the most I'd do is disagree and move on with my life (especially with online reviews). I guess it's a consequence of people being terminally online and/or overestimating their own/other people's impact/self worth.

I'm actually happier than ever as a collector. The amount of stuff coming out on 4K is incredible. The only thing that bothers me is not having the time to watch it all, getting a crazy back log and running out of space. I think it helps with only buying movies that you really think you'll watch more than once and not getting overwhelmed with wanting to own everything.

I started collecting two years ago and bought a lot, then I cut down further last year, and now I'm cutting back again. It's almost fine-tuning your hobby in a way, I know through experience what I know I need now, and what I will revisit. There's some deals I got on some boxsets I've got over a year and I've still not watched because I bought on impulse during some great sales.

I was an avid collector of film (mainly DVD's) since 2001. In 2020 I had to get rid of 99 percent of my huge collection of DVD's, and Bluray's. Some of these included very limited edition sets that I will never be able to replace, maybe it sounds stupid, but they were very sentimental to me and most of them I had owned for at least half of my life. These days I watch your videos (and others) with enthusiasm and slight envy, as film is my life and I really miss collecting. To be honest I have only bought about a dozen 4k films in the last 4 years. You make amazing content , and keep me and thousands of others so happy, and for that I salute you.

I've been a collector my whole life. First coins, then comic books, VHS, LASER DISC, DVD, BLU-RAY...there's one common thread throughout. The desire and the "thrill of the hunt" can easily overtake the joy of what it is you're collecting if you let it. If you find yourself realizing that collecting has become a chore, or causes you anxiety - just stop and think about why you started. You can't own EVERYTHING. It's simply not possible. What was it that gave you joy? Focus on that. I know for a lot of film fans, movie collecting started with the love of watching movies, but it very quickly turns into amassing a collection. So many of which never even get watched. WATCH them. That's where the joy is.

Ever since I started collecting films on physical media I was always focused primarily on my favourite films, this way I am able to make sure my collection gets cultivated properly and doesn't essentially bite its own tail. Too much of the good stuff is also bad. I don't try to buy every film that gets a release, I even designed a system I follow to make sure that the right films are in my collection and I sell on the films I don't think are deserving a place on my shelf. All of this allows me to cultivate healthy habits.

"Do it for yourself" I feel that is the golden rule when it comes to collecting or any hobby really. I'm into collecting both film and books. I don't have all the beautiful popular special editions nor do I have all the latest films in bluray, 4K, etc. And that's completely fine because I'm only interested in hunting down and owning what I love or what I find interesting. Which ultimately prevents burnout since I'm pretty excited with each new addition. My collections are reflections of my personal taste and if I were to chase down everything that was trendy or popular that would leave me with bloated shelves with titles that I don't ultimately care for.
You can also apply this to making RUclips videos. I make videos on topics I want to talk about. If people stumble upon it and like it, that's great. But since I made it in the first place out of passion I don't mind if it doesn't get a ton of views. Pursue your hobby with genuine passion, that is unconcerned for other people, and your enjoyment will last longer.

I think there's something to be said about taking breaks.
I think it's really good what you say about not comparing yourself. I often find myself feeling jealous, even (unfortunately) hateful at times when i notice someone is able to watch three times as many movies as me.
Setting challenges for oneself can alleviate that and even be fun, but only momentarily. Making anything into a game can only be fun for so long. Passion and love should be the driving force, not personal goals/chores, at least when it comes to enjoying something.
Even then passion can still wane, so a nice break, a nice refresher is a huge help. Even people on vacation eventually and rather quickly desire to go back home. "Home" in this case being one's passion.

This was something I was experiencing a year ago! I love movies. I love them dearly, and it is my dream to be a filmmaker.
Great advice, Elliot! If I could throw mine into the ring, I’d say get new hobbies, even if only for a temporary window of several months. I needed to get a new hobby, and I actually started dancing! It was great. I met friends, had a new activity I didn’t need to be great at but was making progress in. It expanded me socially, and then made watching and discussing cinema more special. I also found being more social, and having more hobbies, lent to making writing screenplays much easier.
Give yourself more experiences so you can bring more to the art you consume.

  • @Armandthevampire
    @Armandthevampire 6 месяцев назад +5

Thank you for speaking out about this. It needs to be said. I usually consume a lot of media but mostly movies. But sometimes it feels like I'm doing it for the wrong reason, just for the sake of having seen it instead of appreciating it.
For this year I have been watching other media, like TV shows and documentaries instead. Since I don't really have to watch list on what to watch when it comes to shows, it doesn't feel like when I binge movies.
This is true to some extent when it comes to what one decides to spend their money on.
For a few years now, I really concentrated on building up my movie collection.
But that came with sacrifices, and for this last year, I really cut back and decided to save more, and maybe take a long trip for my vacation instead of just staying home cause I hadn't saved up enough money.

First and foremost, I appreciate the time you put into these videos Elliot. They are certainly different than most other media reviewers and I appreciate the type of films you cover as well. That being said, I am probably twice your age and while in my youth, I burned myself out of collecting music. I think the key word here is "COLLECTING" and if one tries to do that it always leads to not a good outcome. Even though I have been buying movies for over 30 years (from the laserdisc days to now 4K) I still don't own probably more than 400 movies currently. I only buy and keep what has REWATCH VALUE or movies from the handful of my favorite directors. I think there is a huge difference between a Collector and a Movie Lover ... Collectors buy pretty much anything and everything and can rationalize that purchase in their mind whether they really need it or not. Curating things for keeping them forever is the key here. Plus my wallet thanks me.

    • @benskelly8892
      @benskelly8892 6 месяцев назад +1

I think you nailed it here. “Collecting” becomes an obsession and addiction, and as you say - and Elliot says - it leads to a feeling of emptiness. I am a MOVIE LOVER who gets pleasure from owning my favorite films that mean something special to me and have that REWATCH VALUE as you noted. I actually get rid of films that no longer meet that standard. If your collection is based on genuine movie love then it is a special thing, an autobiography of sorts, but if it’s about owning “things” it is a waste of time and money.

    • @lurcharoni
      @lurcharoni 6 месяцев назад

@@benskelly8892I totally agree and you said it better than I can. The movie has to mean something to me for me to own it. Do I pick up sometimes a new one I have not seen to give it a shot? I do, if it is cheap enough. But if I am meh about it, I get rid of it. "Collecting" is just organized hoarding.

Man, I needed this video. I very recently upgraded to 4K. Picked up a Panasonic DP-UB820, and an LG OLED C3. Immediately went nuts upgrading a bunch of my existing Blu-rays and also picking up a bunch of 4K titles I would not have bothered owning on HD. This afternoon I looked at my watch pile to find a movie to knock off my list - not watch and enjoy, just get it off the pile like it's a chore - and I just thought, "What the f** am I doing?" I have FIFTY-NINE movies on my watch pile, including box sets (at least two of which I'm kinda dreading), and two TV series I've barely touched. And yet, before I go to bed, I'll have Amazon open on my phone, scrolling through my Blu-ray wish list, thinking about what I could justify buying. I need a break.

Thinking of taking a full break from social media, smart phone and film collecting, and just watch what I have. Some would say, that I'm thinking of getting a life, man.

I had an urge to collect everything Criterion and Eureka, a lot of blind buys. Any completist satisfaction was more than outweighed by the annoyance that I owned films I hadn’t really enjoyed or would ever want to watch again. They stood out as blights from my otherwise curated collection. Avoid burnout by only buying what you love, will want to watch again or are near certain you will enjoy it. Saying that blindly discovering something amazing is the best part of the hobby for me, but when it doesn’t work out, I sell, and the good thing about boutique releases is they hold value.

Hi Elliot, thank you for talking about such an important topic. I've been a mostly silent long-time viewer of your videos and really enjoy your content. I've learned about Arrow, Indicator, Second Sight and Radiance through your videos and I'm deeply thankful because these boutique labels are of such high quality and I enjoy the artwork and releases. Ever since I started working 1 1/2 years ago, I've doubled my physical film collection from 450-ish to over 1000 films. To be honest, it has become a bit overwhelming for me, both mentally and financially. I still enjoy watching and buying Blu-Rays. I haven't made the transition to 4K, however I often times feel like missing out on special/limited editions. This year, I limited my buying habits to films I really want to own (Perfect Blue and Funny Games being two examples). However, there are offers popping up here and there that I can't resist. I know I still have to work on that but I feel that I'm on the right path. Thanks again for your wonderful content and expanding my viewing habits.

How many times do I think I'm gonna watch this great but utterly depressing movie? But, then again, yesterday I was looking thru my collection and found a copy of Ernest Lubitsch's Design For Living. I completely forgot I had it. I was just in the mood for it, and was more than happy to watch it for the (maybe) 50th time. Hadn't seen it in a minute.

And I only started collecting 10 months ago.

      @@GamezGuru1 I should elaborate.
      1. Plenty steelbooks come in limited editions so you have to always be on the lookout for them because when they sell, they sell out fast.
      2. They don't make steelbooks for every movie that you like.
      3. If there's a movie that you like, it's highly likely that it's not available.
      4. Best way to get the OOP steelbooks is through third party seller, which is extremely expensive.
If I want to get the "No Country For Old Men" steelbook, I'll have to pay $70+ for it. If I want to get the "There Will Be Blood" steelbook I'll have to pay $500+ for it.
Why spend $1,000 for 8 steelbooks when I can get 50 standard edition blu-rays for the same price.

I can concur with the sense of burn out. I love all things movie and collect, read and watch. But work/life balance and demands on time and energy and money have never been so great. Clean and tidy a room each day (moving around the house to keep on top of it), sort a cupboard, tidy a shelf, 10000 steps, tidy 1-metre of border in the garden, read a magazine article and watch a movie etc. My 'to watch' pile has never been so high and with excellent boxes of AK, Bergman, Wenders, Hitchcock, Walter Hill and soon Kim Novak to work through I need not buy any new items in 2024 ... but I will.
Need more hours, otherwise something is going to break.

I saw a time management video in the 1970s that impressed me. At work, create three piles from your inbox: A, B, and C. Complete the A tasks immediately. Complete the B tasks after you've completed the A tasks. After a certain period of time, toss the C task pile if you never got around to it.
I mostly prioritize what I watch that way and am comfortable with it. I started buying DVDs in 1997 and I haven't watched a bunch of them. I'm glad I own them but, unlike the C pile, I won't toss or sell them. I'm a collector and derive a lot of satisfaction out of just knowing I could watch them if I ever have the time.
I'm retired and still don't have the time to watch all that I own. I stream a lot and also go to movie theaters. But, with hundreds of unwatched movies I own (out of thousands), I've come to accept that I may never watch them.

Excellent video brother. I have experienced this in so so many things in my life. I quit being a musician due to this. I was really into photography for years and honestly posting on Instagram all the time burned me out as I felt I needed to get better and no lo get enjoyed it. This recently hit me with vinyl collecting, which I had done since I was a teenager(I'm in my early fifties). I hated posting everything after awhile and rarely do now. I still collect vinyl , movies and books. Books are different as I simply can't read a whole book as quickly. And books are really rarely read by people so there isn't as much of a need or want to post. Overall, this video really hits home and at my age I realize there will never be enough time for everything so I rarely post on Insta anymore, quit almost all Facebook groups etc. I just don't care about any of that any longer. Anyhow, this really resonated with me.

Great video. For me I don’t need every release but buying a movie and bringing it home reminds me of being a kid and time with my dad, better times, so I do it a lot. Same outcome really lots of movies I don’t need. For a long time these dvds were replacement friends. I’m glad I’ve seen what I’m doing and I’ve been able to change my collecting habits. Thanks for the video.

I’m currently a burnt out psychiatrist who makes niche RUclips videos about records as a cheaper more effective and fun alternative to therapy! There is a fairly simple concept I picked up used in child psychiatry/psychotherapy for new parents who usually due to issues around their own childhood end up in a terrible mental state striving to be the perfect parent; as obviously that is impossible. Therapy is aimed at looking at what the individual parent considers as “good enough” and the therapist uses this concept to reduce shame and negotiate more realistic achievable targets. I find I can usefully apply this concept to collecting especially when it comes to areas such as hifi kit and the curse of upgraditis! Another antidote I find helpful is ironically having a secondary interest which for me is Blu-ray/4k which is lovely because it is less intense and I can be much more selective and happy to not buy everything I like. From a RUclips perspective I find Heath from cereal at midnight and Scott from the pressing matters set a good example making occasional videos that will not get large viewing figures but about something they absolutely love is the sane sustainable way forward. Anyway I’m going to shut up now!

I realised about 7 years ago with my collection, that I was just collecting, buying anything that was cheap. I sold off around 500 films and then started curating the collection. While I now don't have 'everything', everything I do have I love. Buy what you enjoy, don't buy it because you feel you have to.

Elliot, thanks for the video on this important topic.
I try to approach my physical media collection as I would a record collection or bookshelf. I do in some cases try to collect as many films as I can by a particular director, but mostly I want to have a collection that, if someone is at my house looking at it, tells them something about who I am and the films I love.
At the beginning of this year, I realized I have so many films on the shelf I haven’t even watched yet, I decided to severely curb my buying for a while.

Only problem they're very expensive, and i see myself awaiting sales. Recently i got the star trek movie collection and oppenheimer on a sale. However, i got the james cameron movies preordered, and fist of legend releasing in may, only cos I've got a 20% discount voucher from HMV... yeah pretty interesting time to be a movie collector. Ever since I started collecting in March 2008, I decided to enjoy the process. I have experienced burnout a few times, but as soon as I see it coming, I just stop before it "burns" me. I mean, I stop collecting and stop watching movies for a few weeks or a couple of months until I feel like doing it again.
I do compare myself with others sometimes, but in the end, I always realize that it's useless. Having a certain movie does not define who I am. I AM NOT MY COLLECTION. I AM NOT MY HOBBY. That's only a tiny little part of who I am.
Don't let other people dictate how you spend your money and your valuable time! This is supposed to be fun for each of us.

May I recommend a docu on film collector/preserver Henri Langlois. You as a collector reflect his spirit , as do others who educate themselves about film and form a core of historian /enthusiasts , serving as a sort of old guard ,against time swallowing these treasures away. I have an enormous collection , and really enjoy popping in a disc and scanning the film and seeing my fav parts (like an old friend) , and 10-15 min. later ,I do the same with another ,and so on. A night could be spent clipping and going from mood to mood , with a smorgasboard effect. Nice to see young people with passion for works of art in your homes!

  • @YellowfinGrouper

I think it’s important to buy and enjoy stuff you like. One of the problems of being a collector is that you sometimes feel compelled to buy stuff just because it is on a particular label or buy another movie because it is a much better version of a film. I think it is important sometimes to take a couple of days before you order something because the sudden rush of excitement can fade quickly. I was tempted to buy the Arrow version of Barbarella because it looks like such a great set. I don’t think the actual film is very good but I worried about missing out on a great box set. Now I am glad I didn’t spend money on it. Other times I end up regretting not buying something and end up having to buy it second hand. This happened to me with the Arrow Phantasm box set. I eventually bought it second hand but there was no harm done as I was able to buy it at a price that was higher than when it was released but still not extortionately priced. I really enjoyed it and perhaps all the more because I waited until I decided that I really wanted it.
So, my advice is to take time and think. 48 hours later do you still feel excited about the title you think you want?If you do then it could be a good purchase. If not, save your money.

I recently faced a similar burnout and really appreciate you taking the time to share this, Elliot. I tried to do the 365 things/year things on Letterboxd last year and ran out of steam during October/November. Here's what I learned from that - I felt like I was pressured, by partaking in something like Hooptober (the horror challenge) to watch a bunch of stuff I didn't really like. And then it becomes a chore, becomes feeling like it's work. And I already watch movies for work! So, I just have to be honest that it's okay to ditch the directors I don't enjoy or whatever the latest Radiance release is to just rewatch, like, Raiders of the Lost Ark yet again. I think the biggest challenge here is that any social display of one's viewing/purchasing habits (LB, RUclips) runs the risk of catering to the way the herd is going. Which is often dictated by what's been released on physical media recently. And I'm not - and you're not - an employee of those companies, so why do it?
I've been a long-time subscriber and one of my favorite videos from a while back was when you were talking about how you and your wife binged a bunch of Hitchcock over the holidays. I'd love to see more videos from you that share with us your passions for film besides the collecting side of things - less about providing us reviews/consumer product information, and more about you and what you enjoy. After all, that's what RUclips should be, a way for people to connect over shared interests.

A lot of this sounds like addictive personality traits; for most people that will be internalised, but for content creators here there can perhaps sometimes be an element of externalised addiction appearing. Just a few days ago I watched a video where the creator talked about how he had determined to watch all the Masters of Cinema releases which he hadn't yet got round to (quite a lot of them!). In addition to doing this he decided to make videos talking about his set task, but they weren't to be similar to how Elliot goes about talking about films he's watched; instead they would be much more in depth and include ripped clips from the discs. Two months in and he's already feeling overwhelmed by the rod he's made for his own back, and was asking his viewers whether he should carry on or reduce the scope of the planned videos. This is precisely what Elliot meant when he talked about doing things for yourself and not for others.
The same sense of making a rod for his own back is in the story of the chap who decided he would watch 365 movies this year. You need a break from anything sometimes, even the stuff you enjoy. A sense of moderation is required. Deciding to collect the entire output of this or that boutique label is fine if you get in on the ground floor (as I have with Radiance) or if that imprint only releases moderate numbers of discs during a year (an example would be the BFI flipside strand, which I also collect, but have a fair few older releases to buy still), but if there already exist possibly hundreds of discs when you start, you're onto a hiding for nothing unless you win the lottery!
Better to set personal goals with limits, say collect the output of a studio you like (preferably defunct so there's a finite number of films on the list) such as Hammer, or the work of a particular director, or maybe films within a certain group, like 'Ealing Comedies' or 'Video Nasties'. That way you can get the thrill without it becoming a chore.

Great video about collecting thanks for posting , I've been collecting vinyl since 2017 I love music but the first couple of years I sickened my self and my wallet. So how I collect nowadays is I buy my records October through to March because that's the month's I spend most of my time in the house (Winter) the rest of the year I try to spend as much time out doors even if it's just in the garden which my bluetooth speaker is used and my records don't get spun, my point is you don't have to collect 12 months of the year to still enjoy collecting, and if there's a few releases that come out during the summer months when I don't buy vinyl they are always still available come October when I start my collecting again

You seem like a more thoughtful person than your average moviegoer. This means you enjoy reflecting on your viewing experience. But based on your programs and the RUclips format, it has to be hard to keep up with everything.
I am at the age where l have a 'one-reel' test. If a film can't catch my interest within the first reel, l drop it. That may sound harsh, but rare is the film that can't lay it all out in 20 minutes. In contrast, if l really dig a movie, l might spend a week on it, watching the commentary tracks, watching the film without sound, watching the extra features, etc. l really make it worth my while and grab every ounce of entertainment as possible from a larger set.
People aren't constructed to consume entertainment endlessly. Movies deserve better than that, especially the unique and talented filmmakers. I wouldn't care if you only covered one release a week because it makes the discussion worthwhile and is a great use of your time. If people want a star system, they can get it elsewhere.
Keep up the good work, whatever you decide!

The youtube algorithm that wants and demands high quality videos each and every 30 minutes ... I think I have given up on that for my own channels.
Anyway, I love watching your videos and finding out about different blu-rays / 4Ks but I certainly don't think I must buy them all, there is just not time in the day to watch them all or read every comic or watch every YT video of interest or every book or listen to every record or song and also actually get out and exercise and meet friends and live a life. Only buy the blu-rays that interest me, certainly not aiming to get most of them as the house would just explode. No interest in worrying about what others have (or perhaps don't have), comparison is a waste of time as it is in exercise classes or in singing or elsewhere in life.

That's good advice! Only I've always done everything as you said. 1 - I only like very particular genres and actors, and watch and buy accordingly. 2 - Never ever thought of collecting every edition from any collection, series, or label, because of my particular tastes and knowing I won't like most of it.
3 - Also rate most titles on Letterboxd 3.5 to 5 stars, because if I didn't absolutely hate it, there's no reason to rate lower. All of the stuff I decide to watch are based on my liking already anyway, and knowing myself I rarely get disappointed. Yes the overall quality deteriorated since the 90s and even 00s, but still it's not often I come across truly awful movies.
P.S. I did buy all 8 of the Vault line-up so far, but not sure it'll continue. That's the only 'complete up to now' series of releases I have. 😂

    Not burn out, guilt.
If I were young and single I would not do want I do now. When you are young you need to have a life. Watching endless movies is not healthy. It's a race no one else gives a shit. You are just conning yourself that this matters.
I am now 50 and I am comfortable watching a lot of films or TV, playing games and reading books. I just collect my favourites.
Burnout is very common in all walks of life. Just take a break and do something else. If it's a case of no money get healthy by going for walks and listening to music or podcasts.
Remember all of this is meaningless if it's not enjoyable.
