Hello Bryan! Awesome that you sized my suggestion. Just arrived at home and watched this exercise of the week (for the first time so far). Looks great, thanks a lot! And I right „now go practice“ :-) Bernd
I'm wondering why the exercise is in 3/4 time which, when I play it feels almost like 6/8. Aren't most blues in 4/4? Would you therefore please create a similar Blues exercise in 4/4?
The exercise is in 3 because the patterns laid well in that meter. Most blues, while potentially notated or thought of as being in 4/4, actually have an implied 12/8 feel, so the 3 feel is quite appropriate. However, I’ll certainly add a straighter 4/4 type of blues scale exercise to my list of things to write.
Now I'd like you to show actual use of the blues scale workout over a standard blues progression, otherwise it's merely just another exercise with no attachment to application.
I’d like strangers commenting on RUclips videos to frame their responses as if they were talking to another human being, but I guess we can’t have everything. I have a feeling you’d moderate your tone, and perhaps even employ some manners, if you were looking me in the eye.
Your own statement below the video was, “Any other requests?” so I thought I was giving you my simple request. After exercises comes application, right? Or do I not understand how music works? Not sure how you interpreted my response as rude - -???? That’s exactly the same eye-to-eye statement I would have made to you in person. Or, let’s say we were in a seminar, and following your “Any other requests?” question, I would have asked " Hey Brian. after those exercises, how I do I apply those exercises to an actual 12-bar blues?” You made it sound as though, by asking for application, had we been face-to-face, you would have punched me, for my supposed “rudeness”. I thought for sure you were just going to respond with, as the player you are, with “Sure I can do that”, so that we (all your viewers) could take that next step. I’ve been really trying hard to learn the blues, but where do I go after practicing the exercises? I think you were offended by the word “merely” when I said, “merely exercises", as though I was underscoring their importance. Not at all . In the context of getting to the end point, which is application. it was truly just one of dozens of exercises which lead up to playing the blues. I think your skin is just a bit too thin, and I wish you would have just got on with it and moved to the next step as a professional wanting to help us out, in our wanting to know what comes next. That's all, in my earnest request, I was asking. I had no intention of being rude, as you interpreted my request. Do you see that now? I think rudeness comes in the form of your telling me I was rude, by asking for guidance as to “What is the next step? i,e., Application.” I truly don’t get your response,,,,,That's me, another human being, talking to you, as if I was face-to-face. Do we meet at high noon? (So silly, perhaps both of us. Can you admit to that? I can.)
I’m sorry to take it out on you personally, but your “request” read more as dismissive of the exercise, or at best a demand, rather than a question about the next stage. That’s been a trend in the comments lately, and I’ve become tired of it. All I’m asking for is a little common courtesy. You’re equally deciding that I’m being confrontational. Had this been an in-person meeting, you would have framed your question in the way you have above, in your subsequent comment. That’s the start of a conversation, rather than a snide judgement. Of course I’m happy to consider any further requests, if they are made as such. Apparently we can all, myself included, learn to do this better. My suggestion for how to proceed with using the blues scale, and the “modes” of it presented in the exercise, is simple. Play along with both records and playalongs to get a sense of how they “fit” sonically. Start out by using the key which is the same as the I chord of whatever you’re playing along with. See which ones sound good to you and which don’t - some people enjoy the dissonances more than others. Play them enough that they make sense to you, become comfortable for you to play, and you start to develop your own sense of what they mean in different musical contexts.

Let me know what you think of this one. Any other requests?

Really helpful to have all the modes written out like this. Thanks Bryan! Got to remember to go through my scales in all the modes...
Doing so really helps you get inside them better. This is a basic version of the sort of thing I do for all my scales.
Good work Bryan this is excellent, thank you very much...
Glad to be of service, Jan.
thank you!
Thank you very much sir :)
You’re very welcome.
