Hailie Deegan Truck Series Future Takes Bad Turn as She Hits Ugly Career Low in 2023

- Many thought the 2023 NASCAR Truck Series season would be Hailie Deegan's breakout year because it would be her first with a legitimate championship contender at ThorSport Racing. Now 14 races in and just a couple from the playoffs, it's turned out to be anything but that.
The 21-year-old has struggled for much of the season. If you listen to the team radio, it's because she's not being aggressive enough and is getting pushed around by other drivers - a problem that has dogged her throughout her career.
This year that has continued, but the driver has also committed her share of mistakes, especially lately. All of it combined has resulted in the driver currently finding herself in the worst stretch of her career, where she hasn't finished better than 20th in six consecutive races and is lower in the season points standings than five of the six rookie drivers, including Taylor Gray, who has run three fewer races.

She shouldn't be in a truck. The quick glimpse we had of her in an Xfinity car was clue enough that she would be far more successful in that series if she could land a decent ride.

I have been a Deegan fan since she came into Nascar. It appears to me that she is highly interested in a lot of other activities except the one that should be a priority. I've been asking myself, how could anyone spend so much time on social media instead of working on her Nascar racing skills. She's just not ready for Nascar.

A driver who has to be told to be aggressive is afraid of the consequences of getting it wrong. If this is correct she is done. You can’t teach someone to not be afraid.

3:45 photo reminds me of one of her RUclips videos I watched where the crew chief was staring down her boyfriend like he absolutely despised him. I have to imagine it gets old having him right on top of her 24/7. In one video he was even trying to tell crew members what repair the car needed by interrupting the guy mid sentence. He's always got a camera stuck in someone's face. You can tell he's a really good kid, I just feel like it serves mostly as a distraction to what they are trying to accomplish. He should just sit on the box and watch the race like the rest of the wives.

Absolutely loved following her dad when he was a teenager through dominant performances in the X games. Sadly, his successes translate into spoiling his kids and providing opportunity for them that she isn't ready for. Until she decides that being a race car driver outweighs being a social media princess, the only result is taking up a seat that someone else deserves.

Her dad’s getting her into NASCAR reminds me of what Harvick said about Dillon boys being born with the silver spoon. If not for « Papa » Richard Childress they wouldn’t have gotten any further then go-karts. As far as more deserving drivers, consider her Truck career: 0 wins, 1 top 5, 6 top 10’s, 2 laps led. When Ford agreed to sponsor Gilliland Racing in 2022, it was with the condition that she wouldn’t be part of the team. But hey, every race she is holding court at her hauler wth more social media reps than any other driver. It may be apparent that I am not a Miss Deegan fan.
She will not be in the NASCAR Craftsman truck series next year. Ford should find her a ride in the Xfinity Series for 2024, before they bail on her.
Xfinity cars are more difficult to drive than the trucks. She got lucky in Vegas last year. If she jumps to Xfinity, I don't see her any higher than 27-30 overall.

I have been a Hailie Deegan fan for a while i agree she needs to really focus on racing i think she should still post as well as keep on practicing at least every day at this rate i know it might sound hard on some occasions like holidays thats fine spend time with your family as much as you want ON HOLIDAYS but on other days focus lets say ok this day will be filming and this day will be sim racing and practicing for the next race that is what she needs to do

I have to ask but what made you to do this video and from watching it your on point what the performance of her made you say something about it because of what you saw at mid-ohio or past races where she hasn't been there attacking meaning being on point during the races, just wanted to know your perspective.

Imagine going from the one that would potentially replace Kevin Harvick 4 years ago, to turning into the Danica Patrick of the truck series and potentially being out of the sport by the end of the year now.
Deegan outside of a mediocre West Series has never been impressive. Couldn’t even win a race in the most mediocre ARCA class. And everyone after her first truck start was like “she’s wasting her time in ARCA! She’ll learn in trucks!” Now 3 years later the same crowd is going “she did good in one xfinity race last year! Put her in an Xfinity car!” after having an EMBARRASSING resume in the truck series in winning equipment plus blaming the entire truck series field on her awful driving this season. When you have 4 top 10s in 3 seasons you have NO ROOM for excuses. I knew after Las Vegas it would be a rough season, but she’s doing even WORSE than I expected since. Four straight finishes outside the top 20 in Thorsport equipment is UNACCEPTABLE and to make matters worse, the rest of her teammates are ALL in the chase with multiple top 10s on the year. Deegan on the other hand is behind FIVE rookies in points! One of them missing the first 3 races due to him being below the age of 18! If she can’t even perform in the truck series in winning equipment what makes people think Deegan will do any better in Xfinity? I know people will spew out this stupid argument “BUT HARRISON BURTON SUCKED IN TRUCKS AND WAS GOID IN XFINITY!” One problem with that argument, Harrison was gifted a chase spot multiple times on a silver platter in 2019 and proceeded to choke in every imaginable way. In Xfinity, he was only relevant for one season where half of his wins came from Gragson choking, and finished behind Brandon Jones in points in both seasons. Yes, the same Brandon Jones that’s scored a whopping THREE times this season in the car that won 8 times last year! And not to mention Harrison went WINLESS last season and see how well that’s translated to the cup series. Deegan is not it. I’m sorry but but if the Deegan simps only argument for blaming Deegan’s terrible driving on the entire truck series field you know you’re driver is terrible. More likely to be on OnlyFans next year. Total waste of time and money.

Well said and I'm a Deegan fan. The only thing I might add is that she makes alot of rookie mistakes for someone in there 3rd year of the series. Yesterday's a testament to that.

She is not doing good, but this weekend she was running around 10th at the end of the race and got wrecked.
The truth is: Every time Hailie tries to perform well on the tracks, she either get wrecked herself or she gets wrecked by someone on track. A classic example: Nick Sanchez wrecking on her when she was having a good on track performance at WWT Raceway. I still beliieve on Hailie running at NASCAR, in either of the three series.

The social media stuff is what has created her " Value" to her sponsors , but if she was winning or at least finishing higher then where she starts then most of us wouldn't be so critical of her social media presence.. I believe she is in over her head with the ultra aggressive truck series....there are people that drive race cars and then there are race car drivers...I would be very intrested in seeing what she could do in Xfinity sereis...There have many successful cup drivers that couldn't win the truck series..I am rooting for her but its not looking good..its almost predictable..qualify 23rd and finish 26th..I dont even see her passing many trucks under green.

She's only 21, I say its still growing pains for her as far as being in the truck series. Lets not forget when she did a run the Xfinity Series she finished 13th in October. She's got plenty of time to turn it around if and when she decides to hit the Sprint Cup Series

Deegan had transmission/shifter issues when she was in the lower teens and dropped back from there.

Don't forget to check these. Easily one of the best Female drivers ever. Rarely makes a DNF mistake. Always qualifies somewhere near the upper middle. She's hell on dirt and pretty completive on the oval. Also good on the Speedway. Always wants more from the car. Her talent is what keeps her from the DNF columb. Fun to watch her get raced hard by every driver of every lap on every race and still pulls of a respectable finish. But then some feel she needs to step aside and watch from the grandstands where all of her haters are.
She is yet another driver that acquired their job because someone purchased the ride.
Tony Stewart commented on this issue and he sees it as a thing that is negatively affecting the sport. He is SPOT ON

Apparently nobody else has the guts to say it, so I'll say it- She got where she is because her daddy is Brian Deegan... Being the spawn of talent doesn't necessarily transfer that talent. Chase Elliott and Dale Jr. learned that early and worked twice as hard as their fathers to be half as talented... Haillie works 4 times harder on her hair color and social media and half as hard as she should on the track. Sad that of all the great talent in the truck series, the most known name is the swill at the bottom of the barrel...

Harvick and Tone needs to open a truck chart for ford to get new driver off this, because all teams as of now outside Chevys are terrible.

That 13 truck is a bit odd. That team (the people on it) is actually relatively new I think. I understand that the crew chief is a champion, but the #13 team at ThorSport just hasn't done very much in the last few years. I mean they were barely on the track in 2022 from what I've read. And the only time I really remember them in 2021 was that horrific crash at Charlotte when Johnny Sauter was driving. Though the point is that the #13 team hasn't even run a full season since 2021. And when it comes to race teams, that actually explains quite the lack of performance out of that car. Their notebook literally has nothing in it since the team ran 4 races in 2022.

It's my opinion that if it is perceived that some members of the team aren't committed to the effort 100% then the whole team suffers. I have read a comment that members of her team don't think she is any good. Maybe, maybe not, but crew members are being paid for a job, do your job to the best of your ability, be responsible for your efforts. There have been times she comes into the pits in the top ten and leaves in 20th, and you wonder why she gets caught up in the drama in the back.

@@jeffreyscott7126 the #13 was running way worse when Johnny Sauter was driving it. In my opinion the #13 team is just overall the worst of the ThorSport team in general. The #13 team has not won since 2019 and was so bad in 2020 and 2021 that they would shrink their operation to just 4 races in 2022. The team is just not the same as the #99/#88. This is not "excuses" but is in fact based on previous statistics for this team.
I think her boyfriend controls her, her social media, her merch, and even tries to coach her driving. He needs to step back. I think it's a 50/50 chance she get a truck ride next season.
reading through the comments it seems lost on folks that driving is the fun part of this business. remove the female/brand aspect of the driver and focus on a driver 'stuck' in trucks for multiple years. the only way they are getting to the next level is first sponsorship and second mayyyybe finishing top three in the championship. she's had a rough year but has she peaked? perhaps, but perhaps shes one viral video away from a xfinity ride because lets face it, that talent pool isn't deep and at the end of the day money talks

Sorry, Watched every ARCA race the season she ran, and had no idea other than Fords backing why she got a truck ride, if you don’t watch ARCA and just look at her finishes, well you might think she did okay, and you would be wrong, there were maybe 10 cars that could win on any given week, or that ran every race.

Do some people really in here think the Truck Series was gonna be that series that would help Hailie Deegan? Hailie doesn’t have any professional drivers that could are mentors that could guide her through.. like a Todd Bodine or a Carl Edwards. She has David Gilliland which has zero wins in the Truck Series. He basically has no experience at all. The Truck Series has been nothing but hard to watch and all you have is rookies making rookie mistakes!.. I’m not say everyone that is there that doesn’t race smart. It happens way too much. I think her being in the Xfinity Series really could possibly help her confidence!..
I think she may be better in a car maybe Xfinity the trucks have a differant balance to them that I think are tuffer to handle

She did great in her one off Xfinity ride. Perhaps trucks and the way people drive in that series doesn't suit her well. I think she needs to have a full season ride in Xfinity before teams move on from her.
She might not be showing the talent everyone thinks she should have,but from what I’ve seen the boys are just running over her. From what I’ve seen she has talent but getting taken out all the time is wearing on her.

@@patersonplankrdwouldn’t call it a promotion or demotion. Xfinity/Truck racing are so different to the point where drivers are skipping either series Ex. Ty Gibbs/Todd Gilliland and potentially Carson Hocevar/Zane Smith. Harrison Burton is an example of drivers who haven’t done well in Trucks then doing great in Xfinity. I’m not a Deegan fan but we should give her a year in Xfinity then I think that would be a good way to rate her.
