they were selling/sold me gray market stuff, as "new", NOT for sale in the US, from Doepfer that even Dieter didn't know how they got it. They are sketchy.
You mention commenting patch ideas - here’s one watch (if you haven’t already) Cinamatic Laboratory’s current Spectraphon demo- it’s amazing and inspiring. More uses, info, education etc. stellar.
I'm into weird, experimental sounds. I know people might not call this real music, but each to their own. These sounds remind me of early sci fi films.
I don’t have to make a decision on this for six months or so, and I’ll use the time to absorb various approaches to it in as many demos as possible. This is the best use I’ve seen of it so far (I’ve not watched Robert’s yet) and I’m sure I could have fun with this. However, it’s clear that it’s not something one should go at like a bull at a gate- I’m sure it rewards patience.
Great sounds. But yea anything running through QPAS and mimieophon will sound magical. Those two help this module immensely. I’ve been messing with my spectraphon for a few weeks now, and jury is still out. Yes it’s an incredibly interesting concept using the spectral arrays as “waveforms”. But everything through it has that brassy, sizzling digital artifact resonator sound. Super interesting, but everything ends up having that same “flavor” to it.
Yeah I wanted to show what is creatively possible with this, as I knew beforehand the both Walker and Sarah would be doing in-depth videos on functionality.
As always your skill with this sort of musical sound design really shows, the soundscapes you create with this are beautiful. This really makes me want to come back to music and modular synthesis. Make Noise should make this a standard system you can just get as a whole! It seems like a lot of fun.
Interesting sounds from the Spectraphon, definitely one I'd like to explore in the future. It seems to beg for a system to be built around it, which I'm all for making more set instruments out of modules.
This could be the very module that finally starts my Eurorack journey 🤯 And halfway through watching I thought to myself 'I wonder what Sarah Belle Reid will do with this module' then two minutes later Hainbach directed us to her video; cool.
You make it sound gorgeous. The Spectraphon is definitely another of Make Noise's modules on my "if I had money to spend on music gear" list. (The Mimeophon, Maths, and Wogglebug are already high on that list, as is the ∅-Control.) I need to get back to my DIY Wogglebug design (it's based on Erica's open-source Swamp), and then build a Benjolin, because I kept getting distracted thinking about what the sound of those two feeding back into each other would be. Rungling woggles or woggling runglers? Hmmm.
If you are interested in playing with FFT and don't have a zillion dollars, Plogue Bidule is a great ~$100 modular software that will let you do all kinds of awful things with it. It will let you take apart frequency and amplitude data and play with them separately. It's a great way to learn how this technology works - really useful to know because it's in EVERYTHING.
This is the most musicky demo I've seen so far. Also, very classy shout out to Sarah's video which is also excellent. Sold! Just gotta find some damned money around here.... Hold my beer....
lovely! I really liked the bird/wind manipulation. I'm really tempted to get one, though it seems i would need to use the VCO capability to really make it worth it. I use just external sound sources and Eurorack as a processor, so would want a way to generate a V/O signal from those to play and mangle them in realtime. Hmm.
Anxious to build a setup like this though with a slightly different take. minus QPAS and wogglebug. I use Morpheus with PGH analog filters. My random/noise section is a mix of a few modules with an out of rack raspberry pi with a SDR radio/ mutable ears. Spectrophon is the module i have been waiting years for and did not even know it. Amazing sounds as always.
How long is the waveform buffer? Can it temporally analyze with a sliding FFT window? I gather not based on your comment about transients getting "blurred".
I would like to share this idea which I haven't seen yet, but I will investigate it soon and maybe you can too! How about adding an audio to pitch CV converter? I think disting has one. And then send the same pitch as the source to the spectraphon. How cool is that? I don't know yet :).
Sounds really cool, but not sure if I'd invest in it right now, just when I'm expanding my panharmonium exploratins. How different do you think they are (aside from having two processors here vs one in PH)?
On paper they seem the same but the sound so different and play very differently. Panharmonium is instant nice pads from everything, SP does more a "lets play science" vibe. You can put two in a rack and find uses for both at the same time
how would i rebuild this on a more or less "basic" modular? vocoding incoming signals and put it through MI beads and modulate the "glitches" from different, semi-random sources? i also have a MI marbles and maths. really can't afford these make noise modules right now. :(
In the Eurorack world there is also Rossum Panharmonium and Blukac Endless Processor, both very capable instruments. Not sure if anyone reviewing the Spectraphon would actually buy it for over 600€…
@@sonicspecter they all seem to have very different sounds. Blukac is quite literal in its reproduction, Panharmonium very good at making pads and kitted with a ton of extras. Glad there's more resynthesis options out there.
While on paper it seems like they are similar, when you play them they are very different. Rossum is more like „turn anything into a synth pad“ Spectraphon sounds like early DSP/computermusic/Buchla
Be careful, Hainbach! To imply that this module can take the place of Norris' plugin suite is fallacious. The two are rather different and there is much more versatility in the Norris suite.
I Never meant to imply that, I was merely stating that I love spectral processing since a very long time and let people know there is a free tool explore some to things the Spectraphon can do.

Great video, but do NOT pre-order from Perfect Circuit. Just look at the many that had issues with PC on MW and elsewhere.
These are the best tones I’ve heard from the unit. Like they shoved a ghost in there. Less make noise and more make drone ! Lovely
Thanks Jamie! Looking forward to what you made with it

I think Morphagene into Spectraphon is going to be awesome. Great demo, Herr Hainbach.

I absolutely loved the sounds and effect of the "vocoder" example song - it's like Beastie Boys went to Saturn. I love it!
Yay samples!
Also Sarah Belle Reid's video is great for those who like experimental sounds and pushing things in new directions.
Whatever you demonstrate, it sounds very appetizing.
Thank you! I try to make music I would want to release with every video

Make Noise + Hainbach = BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!
By far the best demo of the new Spectrphon that I've seen so far. Now I want one. 🙂
Excellent!
Great sounds, and cosmic horror too. 😃
A whole universe of sound design in this system. Fun video!
Soundscapes as a demo, thank you

I have the After Later Audio Bog (based on Swamp) and Benjolin. They are a fun pair for sure.
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
Great demonstration, thank you.
Once again your videos inspire me to go and make music (or at least… make noise). Thank you for the regular inspiration!
BTW I recently fully re-capped both my Quadraverb and my Quadraverb 2 and all that hiss just disappeared. Beautiful. Caps get old and need replacing.
Oh good call!

If the case were bigger (or you have a mini one) the morphagene would probably be perfect as a sound source
Awesome!
Great, many thanks to share with us, what are the Time microsound system adaptations to insert Spectraphon on it ?
No Morphagene, no mults, that is all. But Morphagene and this are great together - which it fit in one of those 4MS pods.

I think should just rename this module to the “Hainbach.” This module was literally built for you!

Not much longer, it is a about 1:20

I'm not sure if I love the Wogglebug... 🤔
I switched to a Flurry and I'm using it much more than the WB.
where did you get that tape recorder you used for recording the keys? I quite like that.
From EBay - it’s a Nagra SN
How did you connect the OP-1 to the Spectraphon?
stereo-dual mono split cable

The Spectral part you can do with Michel Norris Suite. The OSC part not
