Miami is using a mix of the 1-2-2 and 2-1-2 zone. This type of zone defense counters P&R-based motion offense. You need a stationary man standing right on the free throw line so the wings have somebody else to pass to, not just the corner and back to the top of the key. Having the man in the middle, especially someone as talented as Embiid, can create a lot of openings.

You play that catch five-six times and the guard will be out of breath on his a$$ watching the triple splashing. even in the few clips in this vid there were multiple opportunities for easy layups or open triples if only the sixers passed the ball quick enough and stopped freaking moving - just stay there, pass the ball, wait for defense to break, high-school textbook. go back to fundamentals, nba.

I was frustrated with it at times too, but the stats -- .77 points per possession -- are quite ridiculous. Holding any team in the NBA to something that low over a sustained period of the game means it was working. It doesn't really matter if it didn't feel like it was working to us. The thing that lost us the game was our offense (no shock), Batum turning into Prime Kawhi, and a couple unlucky bounces. The margin was almost nothing and we put ourselves in position to win with just about everyone having a horrible game offensively.
