Okay, I think I've watched this about 5 times now and I almost cried - don't even know if it's because of the lyrics or the deep and brilliant way this video was made. At first I thought the visuals were just aesthetically pleasing, but they carry so much meaning (along with the fact that the boys are looking so good in it I'm respectfully in love)
so here's *my* interpretation of the video: ♥
This song was written for Haley, Nathan’s wife, and is about the long distance relationship they’ve had and all the time he spends away, because of the band. The plant symbolizes their love, that is always with him (and, as a plant, is something that needs attention and cultivation). Not randomly, he’s in the middle of other trees. They’re other people’s love, people that don’t face that kind of obstacles in their relationships and are static, always rooted in the same place (in contrast with his ‘portable’ plant). When he’s gone, he looks at other couples (0:29, 2:33) and is reminded of her, calling him home. It is sad, but the love (plant) that he carries is a reminder that he’s not on his own and will meet her again.
Then the scenario changes (0:51) and he’s home with her. Again, not randomly, there’s another plant there. That’s their love again, but now representing her point of view, her own feelings. In that moment, his plant, that was already getting dry and weak because of the time away, is taken care (0:57), renewed, healthier… just as the plant in the background.
Next, he’s on the road with Cole (probably on tour). Again the plant is with him, a feeling and reminder that never leaves. The color changes to red because the feeling gets even more intense, and he’s aching… and more and more trees appear by the road.
Finally, he’s back at the first scenario (which indicates a cycle, something that happens over and over again). Then we see him watering the plant, which represents him always taking care of their love… and the video ends in the same frame it started, again reinforcing the idea of a cycle.
♥ Other details!
* He looks at the plant beside him during the lines ‘it’s the price we pay to be in love’ (0:36, 1:21) - having to carry a ‘portable’ plant instead of planting one in the ground.
* The color yellow could represent the optimism they need to cultivate to keep the relationship healthy. Not sure about that!

I love this interpretation! It reminds me of me and my boyfriends long distance relationship. Its just the same. I feel lonely yet not cuz I know he’s there. I miss him hard but I love him so much and he loves me so we make it work. Thats our price for loving each other. Its hard but we wont stop loving each other and staying there for each other.
No clue who this is, but I always watch the ad on FB because he’s adorable peeking through the plant 👀 🌱

My girlfriend and I do long distance and there are a lot of lyrics that I relate to in this song. It's one that I have found a lot of things I can draw from when looking for a way to describe how I feel. Thank you for writing such a relatable song.

I loved this song so much when it came out, and I listened to it almost everyday for months! My then boyfriend (now husband) had to date long distance, and it was hard! Now we have to be apart for 2 months because of certain life events, and this song is becoming more real.
