It does not look like thermals to me. By the look of those clouds, something else is going on. Did you have a look at the weather chards? looks like a convergence line to me.
Interesting thought. Thank you. I’m still learning every day. And certainly about the weather there is a lot to learn. It could have been a front. For us that day it was as I describe less cloudy and so the sun was touching the surface. Going up and down it felt as thermally. But I’m happy to learn from your experiences.
I do prefer calm air for sure. These thermals can be scary for a (semi) beginner pilot. But the wing doesn’t seem to be bothered too much. That’s good to know.

Looks like a bit "less fun" with all those up and down drafts.
