Ha ha. I was almost hoping that someone would bring this up as you could make a case for either option. If you do make the right turn, it does become Palm Beach Drive straight away at the junction but still the 9th name whichever way it goes, which is still strange and really impressive. Thanks for the comment

Would mount Waverley be the only non island platform because it's the only ground level station? All the others being elevated.

That was my first thought, but another reason could be that, as Dean showed, the second platform was built as part of a passing loop. Why that was is probably a result of there being the space for a second platform, which again is because the station is at ground level. Also, Mount Waverley station is unique along the Darling to GW extension in its position with respect to a major main road, namely Stephensons's Road; Holmesglen, Jordanville and Syndal are located close to Warrigal, Huntingdale and Blackburn Roads and are elevated in order to be at the same level as the bridges across those roads -- which would have been part of the original plan for the extension. Mount Waverley, OTOH, being on the ground, has the line to Syndal going under Stephenson's Road. So it boils own to an accident of geography and a decision on the part of the planners as to what went over what; with the room on the northern side of the line, they could build the second platform for the passing loop... and the rest followed from that.
