  • It's the end of the year and I've gotten my final blood draw and... my ALT and AST values are... normal?

So happy for you 🙏🏿 God Bless! Can you ask your doctor if AIH fluctuates? In other words does it go into remission and come back? If so what do you do to keep it in remission if you can without meds? Some say AIH treatment is for life.
    Thanks

From everything I've heard from my own doctor, from the AIHA resources and chat groups, and from trusted online sources (I think rarediseases.org/ has the best summary which gives more information than Mayo or Cleveland Clinic), YES, this is a lifelong disease that needs to be treated throughout one's whole life. I'm too early in my journey to know about how my own values will fluctuate.
From Rare Diseases: Most people will stay on an immunosuppressant for life because without one the disease relapse rate is >80%.
This was the toughest part of it for me to accept -- that this would be with me forever. My hope and strength has come from meeting and talking to folks who have successfully managed this for decades.

@@SarahCarr Thank you for your prompt response! I watch your videos all the time. This has been a learning curve for me as well. My 68 year old mom coincidentally found out she has AIH and early cirrohsis. Labs were always normal ALT/AST---she had some abdominal pain and they did an MRI and we were shocked. Most of all me because I ended up in the hospital with panic--it was awful. I have learned a lot. We have a great hepatologist. Today he explained that for the most part---as you stated--this is a lifelong issue. However there are people who go into remission and go on and off meds. It is a journey---but doesn't it make every day you are well special? My mom is on mycophenalate---low dose. She just started----so in a few weeks we will do first blood work. Except her case has baffled everyone because her liver enzyme have always been and continue to be normal. Fibroscan and biopsy were done. I think you mentioned the new Fibroscan in one of your videos. My mom was at a 14 kpa and it went up at 24---so that was what prompted meds. Normal should be 5 or 6. So instead of bloodwork which is always normal he is going to compare fibroscan in a year or so to see if it is lower. Amazing. Thank you again for your videos. They are awesome. Keep up the good work!!!!!

@@nelsontorres-rios5508 Wow, what a challenging time it must have been for y'all, especially given the liver enzymes. I keep thinking that there are "regular" presentations for AIH but there seem to be so many variations. I agree that every day on this earth is a gift and to be at a good level is something to celebrate! Wishing health to you and your mom!
