Drawing to update social media is the worst. I felt like I was doing something wrong for not drawing cool finished things everyday like the other social media instagram artists. But you have to think before succumbing to self-consciousness.. The people that update frequently aren't posting professional finished projects every single day. They post doodles, studies, works in progress, and old work too. And the drawing counts even if it isn't giant impressive. Making art isn't only to look badass on the internet. Respect your legwork just as much as the epic shiny stuff it still counts as drawing even if it's mundane. Unless you really don't draw enough, in that case stop whining and get to work.

  • @WolfMoonWings

I feel like I never draw enough. Whether it be college's fault or my struggles with dysphoria. But a lot of times its due to social media sticking its fingers in my eyeholes and not letting go. Another thing in the way is having a blank mind or wanting to draw something but knowing I need to get reference and just staring at my paper because I just want to draw, not go online to look for reference and then an hour has passed. -_- Having books avaliable is helpful for fighting that, at least. and combining the fun with the vegetables. Back then when i was trying to be a more active RUclipsr and i loved to join everything i can, i kept on stressing myself, whether it's me saying i don't need games because work is more important or I don't need friends because chatting with them will slow me down. I even stopped spending time with my family, or watch any videos at all just so i can work and at least make an effort
I stopped doing that now because there's literally no way for me to organize anything to even able to make a video once per week or even month
I let go of my worries by knowing that everyone understands, everyone doesn't mind if i take time, I don't even need to make a special video saying it (even if i did once), eventually they'll get used to it and my career is just a hobby. I also tried to focus on life more this time, and guess what? I have a best friend, im "normal" in my school, and I've become so much happier than ever even if i have depression, all that i have to do was forget this whole channel as a job or big responsibility, instead i think of it as a fun place for me to socialize while making things i love for fun
Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't, good luck for u buddy💖💖

Not going to lie this video was a bitter pill for me to swallow, been sitting in my recommended for a few days now but I knew the answer for me was no, I don't draw enough. And while yes you say we can take our time I do appreciate this videos hard reality on the fact that as an intermediate artist, we need to draw more studies and actively learn the craft- but I am studying to work in the animation field while also maintaining a part time job- I find little time for my art. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for me to squeeze in a few things every week, to do what I can to keep it up instead of give up entirely on practicing in my own time.
So yeah bitter pill but one that was sorely needed for me x)
If I really wanna make it in this industry I have to keep up my drawing! and not all of it's gonna be fun, a lot of it will have to be studies with the occasional challenge or fun personal project.

I would have to save I’m sitting around the 30% fun and 70% vegetable mark. I was in school for animation a few years back. Left because I couldn’t afford to continue my studies. My free time outside of my day job consists of 45 minutes to an hour of drawing and sketching. Each season is different; one may be for fun, the other is learning something or exploring an idea. Never the same. Just because I’m not in the industry like I hoped, and I’m working a job that is draining of energy and effecting my art and personal growth, doesn’t mean I have to give up. I had an awakening a few months back. And ever since I’ve been relearning and sketching, drawing, redoing old pieces and exploring new ideas. Relaying the foundation to get myself out of my job and into the art industry where I belong. Around that time I discovered this channel. And it has been a HUGE boost in self esteem and the hunger to learn more is growing again. Thank you for sharing your insight and advice, and tips and pointers. Much respect!!!!!!

    • @MakoLion09
      @MakoLion09 5 лет назад +28

Personally I would say a character is finished when they say they are. Kinda like when an author says that their characters start moving on their own and making decisions that the author wasn't intending. I'm not the best at explaining what I mean so I apologize if this doesn't make sense, but what I'm getting at is that your character's design should tell the viewer exactly who that character is as an individual. So you need to let them design themselves so to speak. What I do is come up with a personality first, something that never crossed my mind until I read the mangaka of JoJos Bizarre Adventures book. In his book he calls it "Character History" where you write down the obvious stuff like gender, eye color, height, etc but you also write down stuff like their fears, what level of education do they have, their general likes and dislikes, what hobbies the partake in, etc. Once you do that the look of your character will be much clearer to you as the artist because now they are all but a real individual. Pretty much every character I've created looks nothing like my initial design because their personality ultimately changed how they looked.
I kinda started rambling there but I hope my take helped you in some way, it's worked for me so maybe it'll work for you too.

    • @Jack1994hoo
      @Jack1994hoo 5 лет назад +12

Its probably when you cant remove or change anything that would improve the character. Here is when you would reach theoreically the perfect version of your character. However, we are humans, and we can always improve things, so it will likely be when you feel like its ready.

    • @mikekazz5353

I usually try not to go over 2 or 3 accessories, usually 1 item can make your character stand out, and too much can look cluttered and some times too edgy depending on what you're drawing, think of your favorite character in pop culture or comic/cartoons and think why do I like this style and aesthetic.

I've had a hand injury misdiagnosed as arthritis that prevented me from drawing for over 3 years. I used to draw constantly, almost all just images I liked, but now that I'm drawing again I think I'm somewhere around 10% fun and 90% veggies because I'm learning again, rebuilding skills. My biggest problem right now is staying in the habit. I get in less than an hour a week. Pencils and stylus still feel awkward and my poor line quality is disheartening. But I'm finally starting to see progress. I'm definitely intermediate trying to go pro so I think I'll take your advice and set alarms to make sure I get in at least 40 mins a day and remember to take time to play at it. Thanks!
And the hand? I'll include it here in case other artists need to know. I thought it was carpal tunnel syndrome when the doc diagnosed it as arthritis. Hard to hold a pencil or stylus for any length of time, wrist so stiff and painful it just hurt to draw. Then I found a chiropractor that diagnosed it as muscle trauma in my forearm. A few weeks of rehabilitative stretches and I don't even remember the pain well. But it's been so long I'm still rebuilding the muscle memory.

Thanks for this. I've been working on a fanart piece for a few days--trying different poses, practicing my anatomy, etc and I got to a point where I thought it was right but.... it's not yet. A few months ago I'd have considered my days spent on it wasted because I had nothing to post! But now I can put it aside for a few days to work on something else and know that I still learned and the piece will be waiting for me to pick it up later.
Social media definitely changes the creative approach and staying relevant means working at a pace that is way too fast for me. I had to stop Inktober about a week in because I was starting to hate the creative process--and it's my fav part of drawing. Social media popularity also doesn't account for different creative "lifestyles": my Inktober friends were SUPER productive and made me feel bad about myself! But in reality, I was trying to create complex, large pieces that required a lot of study each day while they were making little minimalist drawings that could be produced much more quickly. But IG doesn't care about that and an artist's emotions don't, either.

Not drawing enough cuz my life gets in the way! But I totally agree with what you are saying especially at the end of your video. I’m a designer and I am constantly pushed to create instantly. No time for thoughtful conceptualization or time to edit. This has translated into my drawing projects. I realized this recently and I’m now having to go back and edit my drawing project. Thanks for reminding me to change my creative approach.

Thank you for this video! I'd consider myself an intermediate artist. Sometimes I struggle to figure out what I need to do next to level up, especially since I can't afford college or online courses except some single-payment lessons here and there, so I don't have that feedback to tell me what to do except critiques pointing out specific problems in that drawing.
I'm gonna try doing more of those iteration based, improvement making "art challenges" like the MedHead challenge or the 500 hands. I'm also gonna try focusing both on getting sketches done quicker instead of overthinking them as well as the opposite, taking more time to focus on refinement of more in depth drawings.
    Thank you!

I bought a sketchbook only for drawing animals, plants and places from reference a while ago. I do fanart and illustrations with my characters, but around last year I noticed I wasn't evolving much. So now I will do at least six small sketches of a thing a day aside from what I usually do and I am trying to do my fanart always with photo references unless I am really just wanting to do something faster and more relaxing.
And honestly this last year I evolved more than I had in two years before, so that says a lot.
I am trying to find ways of progressing more efficiently still, since I feel like I avoid drawing sometimes.

Just discovered your channel, through this one video, we were just talking about this subject matter yesterday with friends on discord, professionals AND aspiring artists.
We were refering to the way feng zhu sees it, how he talks about students drawing 20h/day, i've always had a real issue accepting the art world is just made of these 2 category thing : people who don't draw enough, and people who draw to the point where the rest of their lives doesn't matter anymore (relationship, health, hobbies etc...)
I see myself as being in the middle, i've got ups and downs, sometimes i practice the right amount, the right way and the right things, sometimes i don't.
but on the long run, everything i do is "additive" meaning i never really go back to being bad or not being able to do certain things, and i feel some artists fail at seeing the same thing in their own work, they just stress over the fact they are not doing enough.
This is a great vid, and i think you pointed out one of the most overlooked aspect of how social media changed our vision of art too.

  • @shinju112

I honestly am just starting, kinda ashamed about it as drawing and other creative hobbies have mostly been on and off for me so I never developed any real muscle memory or any skill in the subject only knowledge.
Been going through a harsh time in general through life for quite a few years but that's a different story, I've been severely lacking in practice. But when I try I'm either blanking out on what to draw as I have ideas but I don't know where to start.
And I put myself down because of my shortcomings which makes me avoid pursuing anything artistic things at all. Also because I want to enjoy doing it, everything I've learned and done so far I learned myself but I've heard so many different artists give so many different kinds of advices on where to start or where to practice it just makes it more confusing.

It’s super interesting because I’m at the edge of beginner and intermediate here. And I actually have been switching from the different types of “drawing enough.” I’m working on making stuff that’s more fully finished and drawing the same things over and over again. Pretty cool to have pointed out!

Thank you so much for this video, I think (at least for me) there's always a pressure (either self-made or in the form of social media peers) that speed of one drawing and pushing it out is what is the 'correct' method and I know for myself who definitely falls into the beginner category you're right sometimes we just have to slow it down and recognise the level we are at and manage expectations accordingly. So this video not only helped me to gain perspective but actually boosted my confidence in a weird way because for a while I've been comparing myself to others who definitely are at least intermediate most pros, and getting frustrated when I couldn't just whack out a finished piece in a matter of hours!

something i have starting to do recently to draw more and also get more time for my practice (you know, balancing it out with work and stuff) it's draw whatever i see while travelling (got the idea from some artist i saw doing it once) usually while i'm sitting on the train or the bus, i try to look for someone interestng to draw, and because most of the time my "models" get out of my sight pretty fast, i focus on getting the most important postures and characteristics they have and then try to complete the sketch once they're gone, i thought this might help me draw faster .

I can't really spend a lot of time drawing because I have very little energy throughout the day (due to a chronic illness) but what I've learnt about that is that one of the great advantages of drawing frequently is that you spend a lot of time thinking about it.
If you don't have time to draw my advice would be, spend some time thinking about art. You could scroll through your Instagram feed and when you see a piece you really like try to work out why you really like it or if you're hanging out with friends have a look at how they naturally pose themselves or how their faces differ from each other. Before you get dressed in the morning look at your body and think about how it moves and how it's proportioned.
When I do this, I end up finding myself improving even without actually drawing much at all. There's of course a limit to it, it's still important to draw as much as you can but it really helps

But now I draw like once every month and as days go by I feel more and more unmotivated. Drawing really helps me to relax and now that I stopped Im having issues with my anxiety and my emotional control.I cry and get nervous very often these days. But I cant get my self to sit down and let it all out since school homework and other personal stuff are keeping me away from what I love. Or maybe what I used to love.

I really struggle to keep drawing sometimes. I feel like I just don't have "the thing" that most people do. A lot of artists seem to just HAVE this specific ability to comprehend things quickly. And I have issues just understanding how ellipses work, let alone anatomy, perspective, etc. But I want to draw bad enough that it hurts, so buckling down and attempting drawabox in hopes it'll help me understand things more. Thanks for this video and for the encouragement.

If you feel like you don't have that time of day to improve or draw for real just doodle! On your assignments, on your desk anything that helps you and honestly it'll take your stress levels down so much✨
If you wanna colour, just for the heck of it grab a sketch book or your tablet and just colour into that empty space. You'll get really into it fast and wanna draw more.💕
But the best way to get really inspired is just going back to what made you want to do art in the first place, a comic or manga series, anime or tv show, a fan art, something cool on Pinterest? As long as you keep that momentum going it's going to be fine🏆
As for artblock, I've personally had times where I'd just stop drawing in total for months on end, but even just putting that pencil down to make a circle of all things can do a lot. Try finding your style at that point, once you have an idea of how you want to draw you'll likely never have another artblock again💐
Also some tips of my own, music, food, comfy clothes gets me going✔️
And NEVER compare yourself to others! It'll get in your head! Once you do more of your art the more you'll fall in love with it! And the more you love it the more others will too💕

After barely learning the fundamentals since I started 7 months ago, I've been surprised to learn that drawing is pretty similar to many unrelated fields in terms of it being a lot of construction formulas, mathematics, 99% grind, grind, more grind and failure after failure after failure. The trick of it, same as every other skill you develop, is to never give up, and never overthink that failure. I've come to see skill in drawing as 100% less "inborn talent" and 100% more sweat and blood than I thought I would.

My past years in life was a crisis especially when you are still a kid. I enjoy it and have fun the issue is my confidence and my motivation. Do I really wanna take it seriously? Can I get a job? I want to do more than just drawing like animation but don't have the materials for it. As far as I got was getting a art style. I'm barely working on poses and expressions I'm just in a full cycle of doubting me and my goals. In the end I'm. Scared and I just give up which is something I need to get rid of. I've recently been feeling better but still not drawing.. I may use inktober as a way to motivate myself, pencil edition of course haha I honestly don't care about keeping posts going at this point

I really did love the ideas presented in this video! I know it was not necessarily directed at all types of artists, but I do have a point to make, if it's okay. I tend to get fatigued quickly these days, whether it's the joints in my hands, or my brain in general. I know there are remedies for this, stretching, getting adequate sleep, taking breaks, etc. However, a lot of the time I feel like I'm drawing too much, countered by the fact that I have nothing real to show for it. I make webcomics more than illustrations these days, so my character iteration process has basically halted or slowed to the point at which I don't really notice changes anymore. I don't feel like my skills in drawing are up-to-snuff for what I'd like to accomplish just yet, but I feel like just creating the comics is enough to continue to build my skill base, even if it's a slower journey. Even if I'm not directly studying anatomy, or poses, I can tell when things don't look quite right and try to do better on the next page. Learning while I'm still having fun, I guess, is what it comes down to. Studies don't have to be boring or repetitive, although I would agree that a traditional approach may benefit some more than others. I took a look back on my comic so-far and noticed a considerable improvement in just a few weeks, since I took more and more time on those latter pages. I realize that taking my time will ultimately give me a better product, but at the same time, you are absolutely correct about the social media poison. I feel like if I take too long, or miss an upload, I may not garner the attention I feel like my story or characters deserve, and that stinks. I really should be doing for the sake of creating the story I want to tell, but I seem it be doing for the sake of having something to show the world, so I don't feel like all the time spent was for nothing.
Sorry for the wall of text, and some-what rambling content. I just felt the need to express this to someone.

You've done it again Brookes! Every video you post always comes at the perfect time haha. I too feel that I'm not drawing enough. I spend so much time making full finished pieces that I forget to just sketch everyday and be ok with practicing; I always feel like everything has to look nice and finished, which even makes things too stiff. I do think that's a side effect of social media influence, and I'm hoping to get out of that and update my portfolio after what I've also learned at Lightbox. Best of luck to us both! :)
