E o pior é q teve um deles, - acho que foi o Dado Vilalobos - que falou que o Renato compôs do nada. Tipo.. estavam no estúdio gravando o disco, e faltava uma música pra completar o álbum. Aí o Renato pegou o violão, foi num canto, e começou a dedilhar. Aí saiu o "quem me dera ao menos uma vez.." kk e ali ele fez a música e a melodia toda na hora.

When I met Renato Russo I saw in his eyes he had already seen to much of our world. When we hug he reacted as, a person suffering from physical pain.
He was shy, sensitive , an emotional sponge.....his music and lírics were the release.
He managed to put in words our unspoken feelings.
This album should be listen full. It is a masterpiece and makes a lot of sense if you understand the complexity of the lyrics.

That's one of my favourite songs of them too Frank, I'm happy that you listened to the original version first, because it was funny to see you wondering how to do this song with an acoustic guitar, well, you don't need to wonder anymore, just to go for the MTV acoustic version of it (it's amazing!)! That's how you do it with an acoustic guitar! The lyrics are deep, that's a hard one to translate literally. Finally, when I see people reacting to brazilian music, one of the things that amazes me is to think how can our music inspire foreigner persons, especially musicians like yourself.

My favorite Brazilian rock group is Legião Urbana. It is somewhat understandable; I was raised in Brasília until early 80s, when the rock brasiliense, Legião-led, blossomed. However, it is much-much more than an environmental influence. Legião was made up by truly gifted musicians and Renato Russo, Legião’s leader, singer and composer, was in my opinion Brazil’s greatest noir poet ever - unfortunately, AIDS took him at an early age.
Nurture also played a role in choosing my favorite Legião’s song - Soldados (Soldiers).
I served the Brazilian Army where I became a reserve lieutenant. I also studied engineering at the Military Institute of Engineering, IME, and taught there for a few years. I got to know the military establishment from inside and that experience helped me forge my anti-war belief.
Humankind always fought in wars, but never closer to the devastating proportions since the establishment of the social democracies. Until the 19th century, wars were primarily a king’s personal matter.
There are three special treats on Soldados’ music: the annoying and subtle guitar background, the martial drumbeat and the impact and ambiance fulfilling of Renato Russo electrical keyboards - here you should watch the clip to contrast against the easiness and carelessness he plays.

I *still* believe that this song is like reading "Discourse on the Method" By Descartes or even "Cem Anos de Solidão" de Gabriel G. Marquez . You need the editor notes - and in the latter case, he just can't explain.

Frank, when reacting to songs from Legião Urbana it is important to have the lyrics with you, in the same way that Brazilians like me, while learning English, had the lyrics with them to listen to The Smiths. "Índios" is one of the most beautiful lyrics written by Renato Russo, and even in the early years of the band he did not like to play it live because he did not like to see people jumping in front of such a serious lyrics, as if it were a party . Listen again (with a better translation, perhaps in Italian) and notice the fact that the chorus of the song is slower and softer than the rest of the melody (subverting the clichés of pop music). And you got it right as Joy Division, one of Renato Russo's favorite bands, and a big influence for Legião Urbana.

OMG! I love when you do Legião Urbana!!!! It always makes me nostalgic. Actualy, they were the voice of my teenage times, they put all of our pains and our frustations in lyrics. They help us to understand that crazy era that was the 80's and 90's. You know till the 70's people couldn't freely express their opinion about politics or even about the bad things of our society. So we were learning about the worst of our country.
This song is about many things, using a character of indian (brazilian indian, not people from India!) as metaphor. The indian people have been almost dizimated by portuguese people who was conquering the new land. But by the beginning they have been taught their culture. Portuguese priests came to the new land to teach the indians their language and their faith, Christianism. Then they became their slaves, and later they have been killed, during wars conquering new areas.

I just remembered: Dado (the guitar player) said they had planned this song to be instrumental only, an harmonic villalobos-like progression. And out of the blue Renato arrived at their studio with the lyrics ready, and that changed everything.
