Lembro ainda em 1987, quando um amigo nos chamou na casa dele pra ouvir o disco novo do Legião (isso era comum: nos reuníamos para ouvir discos). Imediatamente peguei o encarte e fui lendo tudo que ia tocando.. e quando começou Faroeste Caboclo eu não acredite no que estava lendo... Fui me emocionando aos poucos... e cheguei ao final, chorando. Os meu amigos não tinham prestado muita atenção àquela faixa gigantesca e não entenderam minha comoção. Levantei, tirei a agulha do disco e pedi que acompanhassem a música, dessa vez lendo a letra... ficamos os 4 em volta do encarte, atentos... Ao final, todos estavam impressionados! Lembro daquele momento, do sol da tarde que entrava pela janela do quarto, tudo. Sei a letra de cor até hoje.

Deve ter sido fantástico viver nessa época. Quase tudo que você ia conhecendo vinha de amigos ou vendedores. E então vc sair nas ruas e descobrir que outra pessoa também curtia aquela banda que vc recém conheceu devia ser uma experiência linda.
Eu estava no DÁ da Faculdade de Direito do Mackenzie. A música começou a tocar no rádio. Alguém gritou: "É essa!!!!!! Todo mundo quieto". Fiquei chocada ao ver uns 50 adolescentes se calarem e sentarem no chão para ouvir a música. Ao final, estava chocada, emocionada; em êxtase. Foi um choque e tanto.
Também sei a letra de cor até hoje.
Com certeza, uma das duas melhores músicas do Legião Urbana.
Eu não acreditei quando ouvi essa música pela primeira vez no rádio! Era quase 10 minutos ele cantando sem parar. Algo muito diferente de tudo que havíamos escutado. E até hoje nada igual a esse clássico. Fomos uma geração privilegiada em relação a música. E Legião Urbana com músicas uma mais linda que a outra. Sempre nos surpreendendo. ❤️

Faroeste Caboclo na época em que foi lançada, elevou a Legião de " maior banda do Brasil" ao nível "maior banda do Brasil disparado, sem concorrentes a altura " Eu que já era fã desde 1986 ( Dois) quando ouvi Faroeste Caboclo pela primeira vez, em 1987, nas rádios, fiquei alucinado. Era algo surreal não só no cenário da música brasileira, mas mundial. Na época, e ainda hoje, nunca ninguém fez algo parecido (e nem fará). E se não bastasse isso, o mais irônico é que foi o próprio Renato que posteriormente criou mais duas obras ao "estilo Faroeste" Clarisse e Metal. Eu tenho um certo orgulho em ter detectado já em 86 que Legião seria eterna e a maior. Alguns amigos apostavam em Titãs; Paralamas; e até Ultraje. Hoje eles concordam e reconhecem que Legião sempre esteve num nível muito acima de qualquer outra banda. Se fossem americanos ou ingleses, teriam conquistado o Mundo facilmente

Sertão é uma região uma vegetação e embora não se tenha “tradução” (ao pé da letra) como vc disse, isso existe em muitos países. Aki na Austrália essa região é chamada de outback . e o billabong tbm se assemelha às mesmas condições/características. E não acho q só diz respeito à nos brasileiros. O próprio nome da música remete à algo americano. “Faroeste” (região norte americana ao pacífico (oeste). So, e é uma história bem cotidiana. Escutei a musica por 1 semana sem parar, decorando cada frase, cada estrofe, até saber inteira! Além da letra absurda, a história cativante, ainda temos o instrumental e a voz do Renato que acompanha a carga emocional da história de acordo com os fatos narrados! Alterando entre amor e ódio, rock e blues! Simplesmente uma obra prima!

Essa música é uma história, com começo, meio e fim. Uma história que retrata o Brasil, as dificuldades e tristezas que enfrentam, todos os dias, nossa população. Retrata a questão das drogas e a ilusão de que, com elas, a vida pode ser mais fácil. É uma triste história de amor, que termina em tragédia, como tantas que acontecem em nosso país, por inúmeros motivos. É uma história que trata da esperança que todos nós carregamos e que muitas vezes vemos esmagada pela podridão da nossa sociedade. Não é uma música engraçada. É uma música pra refletir, assim como tantas da Legião Urbana. Eu imagino que, para estrangeiros, seja difícil entender a dimensão dessas letras. Eu gosto muito do Frank, e entendo as tentativas dele em entender nossa cultura e como tudo funciona por aqui.

Eu moro em Brasília sou desses tempo e o Santo Cristo era o apelido do traficante da cidade, a história foi real, a festa da Roconha era real e Renato como um excelente professor de literatura e usurário do produto resolveu contar de forma lírica a vida de seu fornecedor de drogas e em forma de música. O cinema Brasileiro resolveu transforma em filme cujo o nome é FAROESTE CABOCLO. Conheci Renato Russo, éramos vizinhos, nossos filhos crescera juntos. Sou da época que sentávamos na praça onde morávamos e tocávamos violão, cantávamos juntos eu também seu cantora e compositora da mesma cidade natal .
Que bela maneira de começar a semana... Estava ansioso por isso. Milhares de brasileiros conhecem essa letra de cór e salteado. A história e incrível. Virou até um filme de muito sucesso.. Essa canção é como uma peça de teatro. Quer passar a mensagem de injustiça social e redenção final num ato heróico de um anti herói. Na época a gravadora não botava fé pela duração longa não usual para músicas de rádio. A gravadora estava errada pois foi e ainda é um sucesso da banda. Valeu rapazes, ótimo vídeo

But before leaving, the man looked at Santo Cristo with hatred,
and said,
“You lost your life, my brother”

It wasn’t that Santo Cristo was sure,
His future was unsure, and he didn’t go to work.
He got drunk and in the midst of his drunkenness

He told Pablo that he wanted a partner,
that he had money and wanted to arm himself.
Pablo brought contraband from Bolivia
and Santo Cristo resold it in Planaltina.
But it so happens that a certain Jeremias,
a well-known trafficker, appeared there.
He found out about João’s plans,
and decided he was going to finish him off.
But Pablo brought a Winchester-22,
and Santo Cristo already knew how to shoot,
and he decided to use the gun
only after Jeremias started to fight.
Jeremias, a shameless pothead
organized the Rock party and made everyone dance.
He took innocent girls’ virginity,
and he said he was a believer, but he didn’t know how to pray.
And it had been a long time since Santo Cristo had been home,
And his longing was beginning to afflict him.
“I’m leaving, I’m going to see Maria Lúcia,

A one moment you say that he appear to be reading from a book.... let me tell you this, Renato always record conversations, shows and others people with his tape recorder... nothing digital in our times... in the Northeast of Brazil (Nordeste), there is a traditional folk music called "REPENTE" where people used to pay for the singer, normally accompanied by accoustic guitar to sing thinks about their homeland. All the lyrics done in the spot..
Fascinated to hear this performace in public, normally in festival around the outskirts of Brasilia. Therefore, The idea of FAROESTE CABLOCO came from Folk music REPENTE, at least the bulk.

It was an hymn for the rebellious youth and believe me, even now there are a lot of folks hanging around that know the whole lyric by memory. You are right! There was a movie produced decades after the launch of this song that was inspired by the long history of its lyric. The 80's rocks!

Obrigada por mais uma reação, Frank. Esta música é um clássico de Legião e possui uma narrativa interessante, porém de difícil compreensão para um estrangeiro, penso. Mas basicamente a música narra trajetória de vida de um personagem fictício, João De Santo Cristo, com o objetivo de fazer uma crítica a vários aspectos da sociedade brasileira: desigualdade social, violência, as deficiências do sistema carcerário, sensacionalismo da mídia, preconceito racial e social e outros temas.
Curiosamente "Faroeste Caboclo" foi inspirada em dois clássicos com narrativas: "Hurricane" de Bob Dylan e "Domingo no Parque" de Gilberto Gil.
Tive um colega de trabalho que cresceu em Brasília na época de ouro do rock da cidade.
Ele alegava que esteve na roconha, uma festa muito grande numa casa na beira do Lago Paranoá e que a polícia apareceu e levou todos presos.
Também contou que havia um traficante cujo apelido era um estado do nordeste (Ceará? Pará? Paraíba? Não me lembro). Este traficante frequentava as festas e sumiu repentinamente, meu amigo soube que o traficante morrera.
Tudo isso para contar que Santo Cristo pode ter sido inspirado por alguém que existiu.
