I have never seen such bizarre tactical management, such bizarre game management, and such bizarre team selections and substitutions by a manager. He put Toney on in the 94th minute with less than two minutes to go. It's a miracle England won.

I thought the worst part was after they went up 2-1 in extra time. They parked the bus with a bunch of attacking players on the field. Go win the game 3-1, you have superior talent. Then they take out 2 penalty kickers when they're only up by 1 goal. Being an England fan must be so frustrating.
Slovakia had about 4-5 decent chances to equalise, it was pathetic how England let them keep attacking.

Slovakia is not a bad team at all and beating Slovenia and Serbia is not easy they also have players who play in bundesleague , Dutch clubs and Swiss clubs. They stretched England and rightly so. Now Switzerland will be a tough game as they have good defence but england can beat them if they are on top form. Italy was weak they lacked any power in their play that they couldn't even penetrate switzerlands defense
England was a favorite before the tournament started. The players say rightfully so. The manager says that's laughable as they don't stand a chance.

I think Jude could be a very good striker, its in his blood, his dad Mark was a non league striker and scored 700 goals at the age of 40 between 15 different clubs.

The difference between when England went ahead and when Spain went ahead against Georgia, sums it up. Spain were pushing for a 3rd and 4th, England straight away dropped back and Slovakia went close a number of times.

I am from India and what I like to say about England football team is they need a good competent coach/manager. Why England never had that sort of a coach. All stupid and headstrong coach. Last night they can lose the match. Gareth Southgate was and never will be in that category. He is lucky because he had so many good footballer at his disposal but what the used if he don't play them.
England will probably find a way against the Swiss but if they continue to play this bad and the Swiss maintain their levels they will get smashed.

Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins should block Southgates Number after this because it's a slap in the face to them.

It’s easy to figure out why some players play better for their clubs than their country. It comes down to managers. Foden plays for Pep. Saka plays for Arteta. Bellingham plays for Ancelloti. It’s not rocket science.
Also there are better players around them. Certainly coaching ability is crucial. Pep or Klopp could do a much better job for certain.

All other players will be blamed but its Fodon stinking the place out.

I don't understand why it has taken all this time for pundits to finally realise that Gareth Southgate is a very very mediocre manager who has very little tactical knowledge about how to change a game. I'm not an English fan, just wanted to see how analysts react to this sort of football and I'm not disappointed. I felt second hand embarrassment watching the Slovakia match, and they set the bar pretty low after that snoozefest with Slovenia. I'm Croatian, and our manager makes similar mistakes that Southgate does. In our case it's forcing older players to start when they should really be substitutes, and placing players on positions that they don't play in their clubs. It's obvious that these managers like Southgate and Dalić don't have what it takes. Just look at Spain, Austria, Switzerland and others. Many managers have done better with worse squads. Southgate has at least 2 world-class players on every position. I wouldn't say that this England is a favorite going into the match with Switzerland, and that's embarrassing when you look at the market value difference. It's like comparing Manchester City to Hull City and the latter being favorites 😵💫

Since Southgate took over the squad we've actually been on one of the best runs (if not , THE) in our mens national team history. A quarter, a semi, one final and at least the quarters (this year) in the last 4 competitions. It's been a bit of a purple patch for us.
To put that into perspective; the only other times that we've gotten to a semi final in the WC/Euros was 68, 90 and 96 with last time we played a final being 66.
I think England supporters have forgotten just how bad things were even only ten years ago...

I get the frustration. It looks like a standard 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 affair to me with pacey wingers who will cross/cut in with a no 10 who's intention is to act more as a SS and CF who can hold the ball and play the wide men in behind the lines on the overlap.
It's an attacking set up in nature but our team is just so terrified of making a mistake at the individual level that they will sit deep and remain static in both def and in the build up. THAT part is the mentality that is nothing new for England and it's where we have struggled for a really long time now.
May rather bleak take is that we can implement any system we want but until the mentality changes where they are wiling to risk losing a game in order to win it then this will continue to happen again and again.
No manager has been able to fix this over the years. For a while I actually thought SG had sorted it (2018/20) when we started to look really energetic and would press everywhere around the park but that has yet again been absent this year.
The mentality does include the manager as well though who will play 'big names' players who played well for their club over the prev season rather than those who are in better form in the moment and will fit the team tactics more readily (i.e. Palmer).
I think we are really missing R James and Chilwell at the moment as well.
But all that being said other 'big teams' have seemed to be struggling this year so far as well

They both can play off each other and provide services for the front 3. You don’t need Rice in the box he should be far back with the CB’s. Also time to put Trent back at LB. England today needed a player that could break down Slovakia parking the bus and create chances for Kane and Saka and that player would have been Foden.

Clearly what it tells me and I’ve been thinking about this, is that Garret Southgate is making the media’s reaction a big issue in the locker room. Especially with all the mentions of it by the players at press conferences and Harry Kane asking the press to “be nicer” to them, it tells me that the coach is very affected by the criticism and is bringing it to the camp and impressing into the borg mentality of the team. I’ve got to believe that that’s what’s going on considering these players like Jude Bellingham don’t respond to criticism in this way for their club sides. That’s just awful leadership and coaching. What would Southgate do if he coached Italy or Spain 🙄😂
