  • Photographer and former Scaffold and Grimms comedy turn Mike “McGear” McCartney unearths newspaper cuttings, theatre programmes and record sleeves amassed in his giddy accent of Mount Showbiz. Among the highlights … parties at Forthlin Road, why the Lord Chamberlain censored his script, the “Fresh Liver” sleeve, the gag Des O’Connor stole from Cilla (who nicked it from the Scaffold), the water-bombing of Peter Sissons, the Liverpool One Fat Lady Non-Electric Show, ‘60s party invites, the Stones versus MC Escher and a rare snap of the Quarrymen at cousin Ian’s wedding.

Mike has had such a fantastic life and his association with his brother's little beat combo just seems to be one of many boxes of memories that he is bubbling over to talk about. What an amazing guy. Another great Word In Your Ear episode.

What a great bloke, and thank the stars he had the foresight of a curator even in the 1950s. PM is quite the archivist himself, but MM has outdone our kid here.

Amazing feat not talking about the elephant in the room until eighteen minutes in “Our kids band”
Think Mike would have definitely remembered his very first camera…
The mother Mary picture is amazing and probably would have been quite appropriate for the Let It Be single artwork.
Always thought Mike looked such a cool dude in the late 60s and made his own way which must have been a tricky thing considering.
    Lovely interview, thanks guys😎👌

I lived in blackrod avenue in Speke and our back garden backed on to McCartney’s . They didn’t live there at the time . Mrs Carney did . “Stocko “ Stockton wood school is where we would play amongst other places like Speke hall or oggy shore …..

What a wonderful excellent podcast, my favourite thus far, could of easily listened to another 2 hours worth.
Mike is so dry and still irreverent, much more open than his brother, great stories and I would presume the best are the untold ones!
Unique too, who today with a mega star older sibling would change their name in order NOT cash in on any connection, Class.
You should have him back on to share the stories of recording with Hendrix etal, priceless.

Herr Michael, I was sat next to your table in a NYC Soho Chinese restaurant im Jahr 1987. I recall overhearing you extol the superior virtue of cold Japanese sake over warm. Ye also regaled your table with tales of the best clubs from back “in the day”.

There's a 1965 postmark on the envelope but the Billy Graham invitation was '67, so the two don’t actually belong together. Also, the Lord Chamberlain’s censorship of stage plays didn't extend to telly, so had nothing to do with Bill Cotton stopping the video tape. Again, then, two lovely stories ... but they don’t belong together.

Wonderful stuff as usual. What a great guest. Did the 'our kid' he refers to also go on to have a career in light entertainment? How amazing would it be to have him on and see if he has held on to any interesting artefacts?
