    This Beetle looks awesome for being 64 years old! The engine shouldn't be too hard to fix; this is the kind of technology you can fix with a hammer, a srewdriver, a set of spanners - and that's it! Maybe it needs a new carburettor, a new solenoid, then set the ignition...None of this bloody electronic stuff we have in the cars today!

    Dont rush it! Get some good sticky rubber on all 4s, or youl roll it the first rain on a winding road! That front end likes to drift! I rolled my moms 68 and i dont think the tires more than 2 to 5 years old?maybe they were radials. All i know is the front end on a beetle likes to skate on damp roads. You have to drive really slow in a beetle because they have no front end traction. You have to drive them like a tractor really really slow.😢

    every time I see one of these vids it reminds me of when I was 15 working on a 25 dollar VW van. I did get it to run long enough to blow it plumb up when I sprung an oil leak. I knew nothing then. Also sometimes reminds me of my VW square back that was fuel injected.. until that quit. A new fuel pump, lines and all failed to fix it. I traded a motorcycle to a guy for repairing it, it ran just long enough for him to be gone with the bike... then quit again. I about burned it up messing with putting fuel directly into the intake...but even burnt I got as much out of it as I paid for it. (wasn't that much) I really liked that square back when it was right. Always started even in below zero weather, it had one of those gasoline powered heaters that you could actually turn on before you even started the car (it had a timer on it, it would run for ten minutes without the car running) so it was never uncomfortable in the winter, no air so a bit warm on the few really hot summer days we got where I lived in Colorado. I still love VWs but don't own one now. They're too pricey now if they're in decent shape. Hell, it's hard to find a bug or van that's drivable and unmolested. They're either piles of rust or have had all kinds of nasty things done to them. A few years ago, I went to a car show, not a huge one, there were old classics, resto mods, hot rods, and all sorts of things. What car got the most attention, a bone stock, unmolested VW bug. I was checking it out very closely myself. the lady that owned it was surprised it was getting so much attention. I just told her how rare one that's bone stock is, and how hard they are to find these days. My wife at the time ticked me off, we had a chance to buy an unmolested very nice VW window van for a good price, she didn't want it cuz it didn't have power steering, and since it was her money from a settlement, I couldn't manage to persuade her otherwise. we wound up buying a junker olds that looked nice but only ran for like a month.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 4 года назад +1

      oh the window van was automatic not my first choice but hey, if that alone would have placated her, it would have been worth the trade off. I once ran across a VW Bug in a body shop I was working at that had an automatic. I didn't get it, at the time, why anyone would want or need an automatic.

I was sixteen they still had to sign.. but they would sign for a 1965 Galaxie 500 four door... now just what did they think I could do in a van and not a large four door car? I could do anything but make money with it, a guy can always find a way to make money with a van or pickup truck.

    Early on,you can hear the 'easy' cylinder that probably has a stuck open valve.hope it warms up and snaps shut. Ive had one stuck open, started it up,didn't clear up ,so I shut it off and after a few minutes,I heard a 'ping'. As soon as I ground it over, the sound of all compression was uniform and it sat and idled good . I also fill the bowl thru the vent tube. That pulley rust can destroy a fan belt pretty quick.A drill with a stiff wire wheel cures it fast. Thats a real jewel! I love it!

      @PeterWIlson, I used to be that way, until a friend of mine, who is even deeper in AirCooled, got a new beetle from his friend who owns a junkyard ! So based on his new love and his recommendation, I bought an 06 with the 2.5 with manual (Convertible), and I love it. Maybe go try one. It's quirky, but has decent power, and still feels like a vw.

    • @pjwilsonn
      @pjwilsonn 3 года назад +1

      Nah!
      My wife has a yellow 2000 1.8 turbo (New) beetle.
      It has been fairly reliable and has incredible acceleration and, of course, has heating and airconditioning, but needs premium fuel, synthetic oil, expensive ignition components and has had a whole bunch of quirky problems.
      The plastic power window doodads, for example, ageing and breaking, dropping the window into the door.
      And the electrics are worse than the problems air-cooled VW's had when there was a 6 v battery under that rear seat.
      Old air-cooled Beetles have a distinctive ride because of large wheels and that brilliant torsion bar suspension.
      With the split rear window and the small rear window models, riding in the back seats also gave you a snug , secure feeling that you just don't get in modern cars, like being in a cave, hard to describe.
      Homenaje to Ferdinand Porsche.

    👍👌👏 I like that black ol' bug.
    2) I always wonder about those 1600ccm engines that are even in very old American VWs. Aren't there any 1200 and 1300 ccm engines like in Europe respectively Germany?

      Hi CC , thank you , my Mom sat in it today , she likes it too :). A lot of early cars just got the 12 volt treatment , later tail lights and " upgraded" 1500-1600 power plants when the org motors got tired . I don't mind the 1600 in this car because it has so many altered parts . Best Regards , luck and health to you as well CC

      Dear @@5150mxVW & son.
      You're welcome, it's my pleasure and thanks for replying.
      2) Glad your mother likes it too. So your wife is kind of overruled = 3 against one? 😁😂
      3) Of course I also don't mind those "enormous power upgrades" to 1500/1600 ccm. With more torque and hp it is definitely easier to climb slopes respektive to drive with a fully loaded bug. I was only wondering if those bigger engines had maybe been standard for export to the USA (thanks to your answer I now know that it was definitely not). Additionally I think that the original "power plants" didn't have to get tired first. In my personal opinion respectively for my kind of taste, they already had been kinda tired since factory! 😁
      4) 😱 No heart for my first comment...😭😭😭
      😁😋😜👅
      Sincerely yours.

    Hi there fella ! - My Dad like 1'000s of fathers fought bravely during WW2 - My dad fought on mainlaind Europe in a double team - only in touch with mainland Britain by radio - hiding & sleeping during day - Coming out to work at night - Getting drops of supplies by air in middle of woods and forests - only when succesfully collected they would be told the target/s to be destroyed -That would hurt hitlers nazi machine ! - He blew a lot of places of importance up duing his time out there ?
    Hi mate got killed & Dad was blown over a tank but was saved by french & sent home
    Patched up - Dad went back with the guys on DDay !
    After the war Dad signed up with the control commision - It was to make ammends for all the damaged he had caused to the french inferstructure and to help rebuild as he thought !
    But ended up driving the top brass about to meeting and stuff instead - eventually He ended up with his own VW Beetle -
    Dad would always tell us about that little car - He was one of the first Englishmen to race it down the German Autobahns -
    The air cooled flat four enginge was perfect working in extremes from the Hot desserts of Africa to the Cold climates of norway finland etc - The engine would still start first time-Perfect for military vehicles ! - Kublewagen & such
    This small car still had its teething problems though with cut backs on materials - and theives!
    One was lollipopin' Were driving along and going to change gear and the gear stick would come off in your hand - And when you hold the stick up - It looks like the lollipop ! -
    Tyres would be a prime target for stealing - Dad woke up a couple of times tyres was gone another time the whole wheels were gone - But Dad was always shouting how good it was !
    Dad on hisvtime off - would drive to holland & france with supplies and things to help the families
