Do flies have fear (or something like it)?
www.eurekalert....
"When fruit flies respond to the threat of an overhead shadow, are they afraid? That's a hard question to answer, say researchers reporting in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on May 14. However, their studies do show that flies' response to visual threats includes many essential elements of what we humans call fear."

"The neural circuit mechanisms underlying emotion states remain poorly understood."
Do Flies Have Emotions?
www.iflscience....
"No, despite some of the headlines that are spreading across the Internet, scientists have not found that flies are emotional beings, nor did they demonstrate that the insects experience feelings like fear in a similar way to us."

"4 f's: Feeding, fighting, fleeing, and mating" Haha
Hehe didn't even smirk while saying it lol
Feeding fighting fleeing and fooking lol
MoonBeamLaser mating starts with an F
H Fucking does, he was just useing a clean version
MoonBeamLaser *opens caption, saw Fmating* lol
a few years ago. an army of house flies invaded my kitchen. Like there were over 400+. they were in the glasses, on the counter, and all over the food. They were fearless, and did not fly off when you waved at them. So we where forced to bring out the spray. It was a massacre... but at least we saved humanity from a revolutionary invasion.
Thank you for your service!
Kewl
Lol good times I had assembled an army to face em wave after wave . My cuzos and I. Swating all day and night. Whut I would like to,know d news is how could a fly communicate with me and alert me Its comimg in english before Im aware of it. Like it never fails scary ish
You where doing gods work, thank you :')
What did you store in that kitchen? 20 human cadavers maybe...
You would have thought fear would have been enough to convince them to fuck off my food.
Exactly
the 4 f's are:
Feeding
Fighting
Fleeing
Fmating
if you don't believe me, put on close captions and watch that part again.
Mating = Fucking, hence the fourth F.
***** Nope, it actually is Fmating. Check the captions.
MrMeasaftw I know, I'm just explaining what they're implying.
TheInspire96 FUCKING!!!FUCKINGFUCKINGFUCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 4 f's are
Fuck off
Fuck you
Fuck me
Fuck this
Fly.. Are you afraid of me?
Fly: *Rubs hands, staring into your soul*
When you ask them to pay for rent, they'd soon piss off.
I always think if there is a friendly way to tell mosquitoes not to bite me. There should be more researches on how living things communicate.
There is a way to tell them, but it requires a flip flop
Their brains aren’t complex enough
They won't listen because they're not p*ssies.
Fun fact: Mosquitoes are flies too.
there is a way, take a mosquito zapper and put them out of their misery. its the friendliest course of action
I never understood why some people assume that most animals don't have emotions. Why would humans be the only organism to have feels?
The Clueless Corner because it is the primary excuse for exploiting animals)
Human hubris.
I mean other animals sure some of them but an insect I highly doubt it
Four F's: Feeding Fighting Fleeing.... Mating?! Mating = f***???
I thought that.
Hawicky Pretty sure he was gonna say Fornication - but I guess that word is too strong lol...
Semantics = fucking. Do you even English bro?
halsoy from all the places on the tubes from all the millions of people on the tubes i see someone i know
Amaria Hummel It's a tiny world isn't it? :p
The four Fs? But mating isn't... Oooooh
1:57 Four Fs: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, Fmating.
feeding, fighting, fleeing and fertilizing.
The four F's: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, and Fuc-- Mating…
I'll make sure I say FEAR ME before I crush them for now on.
I shall forever be known as khrystov the impaler, bane of houseflies and overuser of toothpicks
khrystov czevak Toothpicks? Actually, don't answer that. Yuck.
Dojan5 impaling the flies on toothpicks :p
khrystov czevak That sounds like a pretty cool idea actually. I know what my new decorations are going to be now.
***** Bad idea. Flies are attracted to the smell of other flies. You'll just get more.
i will break the convention that means only women get comments on their appearance: nice new haircut dude!
Julian Walker I can see a gay guy when I look at his face!
Trollerman Sixtysevan sounds like you're attracted to him! good for you... i was merely complimenting his new haircut, and i have no idea what his sexual orientation is.
perhaps your dream will come true if he is gay though -you never know! good luck..
Julian Walker Julian and Julia are married o.o
Choas To Mayhem ooooh lucky guy! she's smart and pretty.
Julian Walker He looks good without his glasses too!
I sometime have two types of flies in my home, the fruit flies and quite similar looking flies that live in the soil of my plants. I have the weird feeling, these are more intelligent and curious. I hope there will be science about it sometimes.
The flies in your soil are fungus gnats, and they will lay larvae under the soil and they're really annoying to get rid of. They will cause harm to your plants, get some neem oil and cover the top soil with sand or gravel to prevent them. They are usually a sign of overwatering your plants, so lay off it for a while!
Maybe it's more of a gradient than a specific line where something starts having emotions and being conscious. At one end there's humans, dolphins, dogs, otters and creatures like that which can fully experience emotions and life, at the other end there's inanimate objects like rocks and photons that can't feel a thing, in between there are many stages with varying degrees of consciousness. But that implies that computers are already able to some degree experience things, after all there is no way to tell between the way a sim reacts in SimCity 4 vs the way a fly reacts in real life. So we're already pretty much at the start of the singularity.
A fly is been with me about 20 minutes. Its totaly calmed, it walks on my hand from one to the other, Ive touched its wings and its totaly calmed. I would like to know if thet really feel... At least like us.
These studies are beginnning to point out what we should already know. All creatures elicit an emotional response to various stimuli. The complexity of these repsonses can vary, but all creatures have them.
"Help me! Heeeelp me"
That was a scary part
Welcome to the life of a fly
This is what you deserve for the murder
4 F's: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and Mating....I thought FUCKING XD
"feeding, fighting, fleeing, & mating*..
(i saw(/like) what you did there.. lolz)
FYI flies seem to hate bathroom spray and stuff so if you got some of that and you want them to get out ya room, spray some of that and they will be out of your room for bout 30 minutes
Hey, mating doesn't start with F..... oh.... I see...
Obviously flies in Australia are fearless :/
Lmao true
I'm a poopie Poopie poopie, nsfw commissions and
Is spider rain a real thing in the land down under?
It's Australia. Everyone is fearless there.
Joseph Stassup Yes it happens! not in major cities though
I have hard time believing this, the flies that I know only tease me when I miss them, they don't however make any atemp to leave my presents. Or maybe they fear me and play with the fear like some people go shark diving?
I have a question: Why does the cooler side of the pillow always feel so much better?
0:28 why do they rub their hands together like that? I always keep seeing flies do that. But I don't know what that really does.
And not a Single Fuck was Given as this does nothing to advance mankind.
ravenlorans not now it doesn't. but it will in the future.
I have a little bit of a hard time believing this since I've had to fight flies before to keep them away from my food. No matter how close I came to killing anyone of them, they would always come back, even though there was much easier food for them to eat.
Either they are stupidly brave or they are just stupid and we think they feel fear because they don't like shadows.
They feel fear, they just don't fear you.
He reminds of me Sid from Ice Age. Especially with that laugh!
“does a fly feel fear?” wouldn’t you if someone was coming at you with something at 100 mph💀
Good, that fly better be scared because it won't live to see another day in my house....
We're all just living beings with similar ways, get that through your heads
There's flies they get scared easily and then there's this one annoying fly who just doesn't care how much you move it won't leave.
It's like the suicidal pigeon that treads across busy streets
Walking into a Spider Web, I instantly become a Karate expert!
Good. If they can learn fear then they can be taught respect.
I just gotta comment on the 2 things I found funny in this video. His confused look after saying "batman" and the forth F being mating :P
For the last 2-3 years they always get into my house, then it built up, and grew a goddamm army! My mom used to put a light up when she left and all the flies go to that lamp and they just pooped on it, having a million black dots on it. My god. It was the worst.
Guys, I love your Videos! and I have a question :) My trainer says I should consum around 100 gr of protein every day... and I was wondering if the protein I get from soy is the same that from a steak?? It would be awesome if you could make a video about that!!
I Burt a flys wings mid flight in front of my sister and she didn’t talk to me for the rest of the day (shes 19) just because I finished the little guy off with the lighter am I messed up ?
I've heard the thing with the 4 F's before and I still laughed!
I just killed an apparently panicking fly with raid and listened to it make noises I didn’t know floes could make as it died.
We treat creatures smaller than us as literal pests to be squished, tortured, mutilated and yet we could never imagine these things happening to us. Most life forms feel something, could you imagine if one day we are viewed as the pest to be put under a microscope to be burned alive?
"The four F's. Feeding, fighting, fleeing and mating." LOL!
I agree with Buzzash, Thinking, a tree knows if it soes not drop it's leaves it would not be able to support the weight of the winter storms, hence it thinks, not in the way we think but it has the ability to think, it's nerves are it's root system and it's bark it's way it nourishment. If you were to cut a 1 inch ring out around the tree's bark it will die. All things that grow have live.
i have a question: Why is there carbon on burned food?
You think that laugh is evil?
I pulled a fly's wing to make it unable to take flight and forced it to walk around forcing it cardio
"do they have emotions that drive these responses or are they merely mechanical" -really this is a question about qualia and feelings.
i think evolutionary neurology suggests that emotions ride upon instincts, not the other way around...
so the capacity to feel emotions is technically a limbic system phenomenon, and therefore only really present in mammals.
but the underlying instinctive mechanisms are there in the brain stem and nervous system functions common to reptiles.
surely an even more basic version of this is present in insects like flies..... given that the instinctive response to avoid being killed would be driven by some insect version of adrenaline/sympathetic nervous system activation.
this would then theoretically require time to return to homeostasis.
but this does not in and of itself suggest emotion, anymore than a dog expressing empathy or loneliness suggests that it would be able to translate that limbic emotional activity into the kind of poetry or musical composition that the human neocortex can generate in symbolic terms...
perhaps the answer is that yes, flies have a very very very basic form of "qualia, self and consciousness" a la ramachandran's brilliant formulation found in the youtube video of the same name -but without anything like the depth, complexity and reflexivity that we have.
Straight-face while mentioning the 4 f's. 😂
Mating dosn't start with an F....
I think you meant "Fucking".
Hahaha. the four F's: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, and Mating. I love it!
Thumbs up, if soon after hearing "Four F's: feeding, flying, fighting and mating", you came to the comment section to comment in it, but someone else already noted it out....so you just left
so do they fear or not?
"The 4 F's: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and Mating" Hehe
I have never seen flies fight. Do they fight between themselves or will a fly try to fight other animals if they are threatened?
I love the people who write in closed captions😂
I live in Indonesia and we have those supersized-humongous flies. That's disgusting and fearless..
I like the way he presets science (:
The four Fs : Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing, and "Mating"... I see what you did there ;)
Why is d news on seeker, did they buy them?
I don't mind flies outside. Then they are no problem at all. It's when they come into the house. Then I can't stand them and will do anything to get rid of them. Not just flies but bluebottles too.
So much complicated explanations! You could have just said Yes or No...
Wait, Mating starts with letter "F"?
why do files fear?..because god made them that way
How did God make them that way? Why do we fear? Has nothing to do with God buddy, take you and ur ignorance out of here...
Matt Hamilton Films Problem?
Matt Hamilton Films Matt dear, what have we told you about feeding the trolls?
Dojan5 your have been trained well. my Jedi mind tricks wont work on you..
Why is the square root of four equal to two? Because God.
You've only made a new question with an added component of a god.
In short: we have no idea.
Flies be like " ay nigga "
What's the favor flies do anyway ?
I like this guy. Have him more often
That disgusting feeling you get when you hit the fly with your hand
true
How ear phones are dangerous for ears ?
emotions are survival instincts
I think Julien should change his glasses. He loks good without them and his eyes look away when with them.
Hmm. I'm still not convinced flies can experience fear. It still looks like mere evolutionary adaptations. Though I don't know where I would draw the line and call it an emotion. I wonder if there's an objective way to do that
They know we're trying to get them when we swat them therefore they are afraid . Since they are afraid they have fear.
Don't ever think life can not feel because that's what life is conscious feeling if it's not alive it can not consciously feel
If you ask psychologists emotion and feeling are different things.
so do they or do they not feel fear?????????????????????
MAKE A VIDEO OF THE BURMUDA TRIANGLE
What about cockroaches? They tend to run towards you and climb up when startled.
I hate that flies are always plotting
Wow Julian!! You look amazing.
I have a house fly but it’s not scared of me it likes landing on me when I’m playing games if lying down
Flies and mosquitoes are attracted to the smell of lactic acid in our sweat and they prefer to land of white , warm and moist surfaces.
I don't know what "officially" constitutes an emotion, but I'd say there's a significant difference when it comes to the ability to intellectualize that emotion, even on a primitive level. Example: "Danger, therefore, avoid" is a simple response which even a machine could be programmed to do. "Danger, and I'm aware of the fact that I'm afraid of it," adds an element of self-awareness, which makes it an emotion as humans would understand it. Do flies do this? I don't know, but it seems unlikely. The fact that flies apparently have the same behavior as each other suggests they're driven more by instinct than psychology or choice. Compare that do more complex animals like dogs or cats, which exhibit varying personality traits, suggesting a more nuanced psychology. But this is just me talking out of my ass.
Shawn Ravenfire That's exactly what the study was getting at, but I like the point that they don't show much variability between individuals. Maybe because they have smaller brains it doesn't allow for that complexity? It makes me wonder how smart an organism has to be to have emotions? What's the cutoff point for that?
jhug111 The only way to find out is start selectively breeding animals for intelligence, and eventually teach them how to speak English.
I can imagine it now. Dogs and cats yelling "FEED ME, YOU FUCK" instead of whining and meowing.
***** I don't see how that plays into my comment. Are you talking about dogs and cats killing humans? Plenty do that already..
Xor'Kov You actaully cannot teach other animals english, the lack of lip muscles and the proper vocal chords would be a huge hurtle. Now you could in theory use intelligence to teach them how to understand English and maybe develop a way for them to communicate back, but actual speech is not physically possible [yet].
And speaking of a means of communication, researchers are actually attempting to communicate with dolphins. While there are significant hurtles, there are huge amounts of evidence to suggest that they feel emotions in a far more complex manner than we do, self aware and everything that is required for sapience. This is research worth pursuing as it would radically change how we have to think about ourselves as an intelligent species.
Article link on learning to communicate: ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2015/05/dolphin-intelligence/foer-text
Adleisio Cefnfor Fun fact: Dolphins evolved from hooved animals
I wanna torture this fly that keeps going by my head at 2am while im trying to do homework
so this means that flies also have
I feel that all living things have feelings and fear, maybe not the same as ours but never the less life is life. I remember a study that was done 20+ years ago the proved the plants feel pain. Life is life regardless of size and or matter.
buzzsah ps, a tree sheds it's leaves for the winter because it knows it can not survive the weight of the winter upon it's leaves. So to survive another season it drops it's leaves to save it's body so it can reproduce new leaves to help take in water, , help clean the air, giving us clean oxygen, shad, and more.
buzzsah Plants can't feel pain or express any thought or emotion. They do not have brains, nervous systems, or sensory organs like we do.
Darth Trayeth Exactly not as we do. But to think we are the only form of life, and we are the only living, or type of living things that can feel because we have things that other things do not would be of a closed minded person. A tree, plant has roots to collect nourishment to feed, it needs water if not it dies, it produces. Right it don't have organs as we or as we know but that doesn't mean they can not feel in their own way.
Darth Trayeth Non in the way that you would know or register as a human. But, plants do register these things as was proven in some studies. A good example was a popular scientific study done by the Japanese involving x2 bowls of rice in x2 separate rooms. The one bowl of rice was hated on with negative comments and went moldy soon. However, the other bowl of rice was spoken to with love and it actually lasted longer than it's due date to have gone moldy =^_^=
Sonic Quake 00AD The only explanation I can think of is the tone of our voices affected it by the differences in the strength of sound waves. Also, a bowl of rice as you described would already be dead so..
*rubs hands together flyishly*
Don't animals need some sort of fear mechanism in order to survive and better protect themselves?
Hytherdel Yes but we haven't really been able to determine if their fear mechanism is like ours. When we are afraid of something, we realise it. An animal seems to think "Danger, therefore avoid" whereas humans think "danger and I am aware that it scares me, I am afraid of it." Think about how spiders or mice scare some humans. We are larger, stronger, faster, and smarter than the spider/mouse, we even have makeshift weaponry that would allow us to kill it without getting close (broom sticks, etc.) Yet, some people are so afraid that they will not even act even though this creature is incabale of harming them. If humans thought like animals, we would simply avoid or kill the spider and that would be that.
Mason Hatcher tru
*****
True, and I'm not saying animals don't think like us through their fear responses and triggers, I'm simply stating that we are unsure whether or not they think like us.
"The four Fs: Feeding, Fighting, Fleeing and Mating." I see what you did there.
So this is where my tax money is going to...
Is there any science behind the Charlie Charlie challenge?
The 4 Fs. Feeding, Flying, Fleeing and Mating? That a M bit an F.
I should be getting dressed for work, yet im laying here watching this.
Why is this important?
According to Buddhism, all Sentient Beings that have Consciousness desire happiness and fear pain/suffering. Therefore, they are very much like us.
WAIT... 4 Fs?!?!?!? feeding fling fleeing and MATING?!?!? Mating doesn't start with an F... but I know a synonym that does ;)
Kenneth Roberts Me too. Fertilizing. :)
4 F's Fedding Fighting Flying and Mating???? OOOOHHHHHH I get it Fu#*ing!!! HA!!!!
Why wouldn't they have emotions? How can people seriously think the answer would be anything else... they aren't robots, they are alive.
Until when they came to the valley of the ants, a she ant exclaimed, “O ants, enter your houses - may not Sulaiman and his armies crush you, unknowingly.” (18) He therefore smiled beamingly at her speech*, and submitted, “My Lord, bestow me guidance so that I thank you for the favour which You bestowed upon me and my parents, and so that I may perform the good deeds which please You, and by Your mercy include me among Your bondmen who are worthy of Your proximity.” (Prophet Sulaiman heard the voice of the she ant from far away.) (19) - Qur'an - Surat An-Naml
The four Fs. Fleeing, fighting, feeding and mating?! Just say it! FUCKING!
