We look at how university administrators have responded to Palestine solidarity protests by students with Frederick Lawrence, former president of Brandeis University and now the CEO of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and a lecturer at Georgetown Law School. Brandeis was founded in 1948 by the American Jewish community in the wake of the Holocaust and named after the first Jewish Supreme Court justice, the celebrated free speech advocate Louis Brandeis. Lawrence says the nationwide university crackdown on student protesters is a worrying violation of the principles of academic freedom. "Provoking people, challenging people, asking difficult questions, making people uncomfortable, that's part of the price of living in a democracy," he says. He also notes that what constitutes a threat to campus safety should be narrowly defined. "You are not entitled to be intellectually safe. You are entitled to be physically safe."

Just gradually worse today. Conditioned populous from many aspects.
Many are still distracted and asleep. Many still are young being awake in our controlled ism.
A far right Israeli gov. official just used the words "annihilate" or "totally annihilate" in referring to his government's intent, and goal, where Gaza, and it's population, is concerned. When critics of this stated Israeli policy use such language they are labeled "antisemitic", censored, and threatened with retaliation of some sort. So how is this new definition going to be applied?
Extremists have free speech in Israel. They do NOT determine policy.

Congress just passed a bill outlawing any speech critical of zio ism or the belligerent state as antisemitism. Still has to pass the Senate, time to harass our Senators is right now.

Thank you for this excellent interview.
Are people actually unsafe, or do they FEEL unsafe? I mean, feelings are valid, but with no actual threat behind them beyond dissent with decorum, it's time to take a little personal responsibility for how you feel, and deal with it. Someone else's mere presence is not a threat when you have a reasonable expectation of arriving at your destination without incident.
That can be a hard thing to determine these days. I don't feel safe even going into NYC anymore, and I lived there for 14 years, and was on the subways etc.
all day long. And it's been demonstrated more recently that you AREN'T safe in NYC, anywhere.
@@thiscorrosion900 Granted, but is the feeling of unsafety MORE than any other person's, and is that justified?
@thiscorrosion900 'Like the U.S. as a whole, the violent crime rate in New York has improved substantially since the 1990s. As of 2020, New York's violent crime rate was 57% lower than it was in 1995.'
If they feel "unsafe" from sayings such as "from the river to the sea", they are certainly entitled to their feelings. But what's in question is their intellectual capacity. They no longer qualify to study at the college level. They should jump back to 5th Grade to really understand basic English.

This is how you need to vote in November:
We must fully resist and _always vote_ against (& less authoritarian than) both the Democratic *and* Republican Parties- including Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, Rand Paul (He’s _no_ Ron Paul), Warren Davidson, Ron Johnson, and all other Republicans.
For _all_ public positions. And this same strategy applies against the same one or more party-monopolies in _all_ countries worldwide.
Real libertarians will never be Republicans or Republican loyalists. You can always _write-in_ an anti-authoritarian person if no candidates for a position fit that bill.
This will continuously reduce the power of _all_ authoritarian parties in the party monopolies. Until our task is complete.
Repeat strategy for all new authoritarian parties that emerge.

None of the above. We do not live in a democracy. We live in a plutocratic oligarchy. The electoral process will not solve our problems.
@@poksnee Yes it will. Re-read my OP (& twin comment). Thoroughly. Carefully. You’ll get it.
If you have other progressive and humanistic solutions, then you can do those also. It’s not mutually exclusive in any sense. But your reply here is technically reactionary. You need to stop making public statements like that.
Y'all keep talking about resistance. Resist this and resist that. It's a very bad idea. You need to be pushing people to becoming active, voting, participating, getting involved in the politics and policies by running for local and national positions within the government.
This was the failure of the 60s and 70s. All the kids wanted to resist and protest and become isolated in little communes. And it made the government's job so much easier because they could slowly engage with each cell at their own pace.
And don't think for one second that there weren't FBI agents inside each and every encampment, learning who the leaders were, slowly spreading discontent, advocating for the encampments to get violent. This is the justification needed by the police to break up the protest.
These idiot students should have spent more time in class learning history instead of listening to youtube channels like Democracy Now!.
We need campaign reform, term limits, and limits on lobbying. There is too much quid pro quo between government officials and well-funded special interests.

Changing or repealing a constitutional amendment requires a 2/3 vote of both houses of congress and ratification by no less than 3/4 of all states. A constitutional amendment can not be superseded by state law, federal law, or even by supreme court decision per the Supremacy Clause.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
In Marbury v. Madison, 5 U.S. 137 (1803), the Supreme Court held that Congress cannot pass laws that are contrary to the Constitution.
They don't care.
Dr. Lawrence's arguments are so brilliant that I hope he co-authors a body of legislation (with other luminaries from esteemed institutions) about this topic!

I agree with this gentleman concerning talking through what some may find difficult and challenging topics of discussion. I think he is spot on. This is how society, especially a diverse one, learns how to get along.
Challenge the intellectual safety , just as a scientist challenges their hypothesis.
I wish President Biden could have approached his speech on the protests today in the same manner. I know Biden grasps the subject (and CERTAINLY better than Trump), but his response was just too simple and pedantic.
These protests have been entirely peaceful, though the reaction to them has not. If these students want to stand on the grass with protest signs until the end of their natural lives, that is their right as citizens of a free society. Until or unless they are disrupting the normal course of business where they are, leave them be! Their voices deserve to be heard as much as anyone else's.
Not entirely true, since apparently the UCLA protests got a bit violent the past few evenings. The thing is any protest has the potential to get violent, it's an unfortunate
by-product (or possible) of any such gathering. I'm not blaming the cops for starting THAT violence, they didn't, but often their reaction to such events goes far
overboard. But, if the protesters get violent amongst each other, warring groups, agitators, well, then it becomes a highly dangerous situation.
@@thiscorrosion900 WHO got violent, though? Was it the encampment or others reacting?
@@JayeEllis Well, what I heard was it was rival factions at the protest that were getting into a melee, Palestinian vs. Israel protestors. Or it could have been outside forces coming in to start the violence too, I honestly have no idea. But it was all documented on the news. At that point, it wasn't the cops doing it.
@@thiscorrosion900 And I heard that the encampment was entirely peaceful until "outside forces" aka, counter protesters arrived. I don't recall directing any blame towards police.
@@JayeEllis I see, well yeah, it was peaceful until then, for sure. I'm not blaming the police, either, in this case. But things can tend to get out of hand after the cops are called in, as well. Just saying.
They nonchalantly made this about students and their ruckus not the victims in concentration camps. Very skillful! Please keep the discussions going!

Not true. DNA testing has been done on them, is shows their Jewish ancestry and that they’re the direct descendants of the region’s original inhabitants.
Some have Arabic roots in them as well but overall, they are the Jews that never left.
And Gaza’s population are the indigenous who were expelled from their land by Isr… nearly all came from the West Bank or what is now Isr..
They’ve been there for generations. A Zionist says the land belongs to us. The indigenous say we belong to the land
