Why is everybody saying he didn’t explain anything? He said 1) check for decay, rotten spots 2) check to see if it’s hardwood vs softwood 3) look for found wood in areas that aren’t sprayed down with pesticides 4) soak your found wood for at least a week…I got my kids (me) a fish tank for Christmas and this helped me know where to start at what to look for. I found some nice pieces by the woods/river yesterday so now I know where to start.
The only time I've collected my own driftwood, I soaked it in saltwater. I figured it would pull the tannens out, which it absolutely did. I also figured it would kill any bacteria. I took a Dremel & carved out all the rotted stuff. The piece was big enough I was able to hide a sponge filter with a power head, inside it. I think I have a video about it.
Been doing a lot of research but I don’t see any information on bark. I have an amazing piece but it’s kinda got a flakey bark. It comes off sorta easy. But I worry about not getting it all off. I’m going to try a pressure washer and see if that gets me somewhere. 🤙🏼
After watching ypur video,I realize I have a oak tree in front of my house lol What does it mean if there is white spots and leaves growing on the bark? I found one this morning in front of the tree Can I just cut a branch off the tree?

What kind of salt did you use?
Are you in St Louis? I'm near Carbondale. I've got an empty barn that I'm planning on turning into a fish grow farm. Sure could use a partner.
This was super helpful, thank you!
Also the ending 😂
Can I use deer antler in my fish tanks?
