I found some nice wood when I was camping, I want to put it in my aquarium but the wood is 48 inches long so I cant boil it. Is there any other way I can clean the wood to make sure all the parasites are dead? I've been soaking the wood in the tub for a week now with a couple water changes and I've been using the hottest water setting temperature for the tub. Thanks

What kind of wood is it? You’ll never get 100% of the tannins out, but the goal is to get out that initial big chunk (if you don’t desire it). It’s ok to have tannins in the water with your fish, it’s actually good for them BUT will lower your pH in the making.

Man, I've been soaking a Malaysian driftwood for about a month and the water is still turning brown. Yes, I've been changing the water every now and then. What should I do?
You can boil wood in a metal garbage can by putting it on cinder blocks and building a fire under it. That is if you have a place to do it. I've soaked some wood like mopani in a tote for up to a year. I change the water once a month.
Help!! Still waiting to hear back on the Malaysian driftwood I soaked for 2 wks. It still turns my aquarium water black coffee BLACK. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I found myself having this problem when I got the big pieces of wood that I put in my 29 gallon a while back. I ended up water logging it in the aquarium, which was a mistake. It killed some of my fish and the water was cloudy for weeks.
Yanji Jay Whelp, that’s a very good reason as to why it’s like that! I’d 100% remove it from your aquarium because it’s also probably harming your fish.
I bought driftwood from a fish store and I put it in a tank with fish in it already. Next morning I wake up to dark water with the whole gang floating...was it the wood?
I spent $100 for a Malaysian driftwood. I soaked completely, rinsed, soaked some more on & on for over 2 weeks escalating my water bill. Tannins were still leaching so I gave up. A few months went by & I thought I would just set up my new tank & hope for the best. I put some cleaned black sand in, a few Val grass plants & some new rinsed off plastic plants. The water turned a bit dark. I have the hob running full speed with lots of floss that I change daily. 4 days later it looks like black coffee. I spoke to the pet store & was told to boil it for 8 hours... WTF!! Can you please help. No way can I boil something that large.
Water changes will help clear up the water. The initial release of tannins is always the worst but after 1-3 months with weekly water changes it’ll get better and better. The tank will only get cleared of tannins after maybe 1-2 years, but it’ll be much less after the initial 3-6 months. Tannins actually are beneficial for your fish, so don’t worry! Just monitor your pH!
I did boiled too to mske it litle bit quick. May i suggest for pick old aged wood if you can, or may be wood that already dead for long time n got heat from sun also better less tanin

It could happen for months actually! Most of the tannins will come out in the first 1-2 weeks though. After that, you should be good. It’s not terrible to have tannins in the water, it’s actually good for the fish!
What about naturally sourced wood?
Not a fan of that. You have no idea what type for organisms are living in or on that wood.
Man, I've been soaking a Malaysian driftwood for about a month and the water is still turning brown. Yes, I've been changing the water every now and then. What should I do?
John Aranita If it’s not too big, you can try boiling it!
Dude I have 2 ft driftwood how much time will it take to sink by itself?
Really depends on the density of the wood, not the overall size
It's already sinking in the tub soon as u started??
Yep! Some woods have different densities and porousness.
You can boil wood in a metal garbage can by putting it on cinder blocks and building a fire under it. That is if you have a place to do it. I've soaked some wood like mopani in a tote for up to a year. I change the water once a month.
Savage but cool
If the wood has been soaking in freshwater it's already good to go.
What if I just put a heater and let the driftwood tannin leech out in the container with water instead of changing the water
Way to long my friend. Boil it for about hours is quick way.
I have stained my wood with adding meth blue to the tank silly me,how can i get the blue stain out of the wood
Driftwood And Lava Rocks Have Any Specific Life Span???How To Maintain Them For A Longer Time ... Thanks For Advance...😊❤️
Bala Murugan Not that I’m aware of! The beneficial bacteria will grow on the lava rocks and driftwood is just wood inside of water 😅
@@LongIslandFishGuy
Thank You 😊
Help!! Still waiting to hear back on the Malaysian driftwood I soaked for 2 wks. It still turns my aquarium water black coffee BLACK. HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Just answered
How to remove bed smell in driftwood
Minutes to boiled?
Ralph Bonifacio It really depends on the size and density of the wood. Gotta get that deep brown color. This video would be better for you if you want to boil it: ruclips.net/video/t2t7GzWXVRE/видео.html
With this methid, whats the point of soaking? Using normal watersouldnt kill the harmful stuff?
It will release the initial tannins from the wood and the untreated chlorinated tap water should take care of bacterias or fungi living on the wood.
The drift wood I found is so light it floats how do you get it heavy too stay at the bottom?
You can use a rock or something heavy to submerge it. Within a few hours or days it will soak enough that it will sink.
I found myself having this problem when I got the big pieces of wood that I put in my 29 gallon a while back. I ended up water logging it in the aquarium, which was a mistake. It killed some of my fish and the water was cloudy for weeks.
Jeremy's Wild Studio Oh damn, maybe because of a sudden pH drop? What do you think it was?
Long Island Fish Guy possibly a ph drop. It was quite a while ago so I definitely learned my lesson. The wood is still in the tank today.
I use our large cooler. All the water goes on our lawn. Win win situation. 👍
That’s is a win win! 😅
What if we put a boiled water into big bucket for drift wood.. 💡
UuN Bray That might work - But I’m not sure how long the water would be boiling for after you move it!
What if they’re too long to fit in a pot
No need for a pot, use a tote like the one used in this video
😢😭 I did this & used it in my tank idk why but it started to soften up & rot why's that
Yanji Jay What type of wood did you use? Not all wood is meant for aquariums
@@LongIslandFishGuy I have no clue I got it from a lake.
Yanji Jay Whelp, that’s a very good reason as to why it’s like that! I’d 100% remove it from your aquarium because it’s also probably harming your fish.
@@LongIslandFishGuy yeah thnx had no fishes in there but I already tossed it out
Awesome Video Thanks for sharing FishFam NJAE19
Wow that's a big big plant
Brandyn S That’s what she said - Michael Scott
That big bundle of Nubias looks really expensive🤑🤑🤑
MR.FACTS ARE RACIST It would be, but ya boy has the hook up 😏😉
Long Island Fish Guy so jelly🤣😂
this guy only uses external HOB filters ?
I bought driftwood from a fish store and I put it in a tank with fish in it already. Next morning I wake up to dark water with the whole gang floating...was it the wood?
All of the fish died? It may have caused pH shock in the aquarium.
@@LongIslandFishGuy yes exactly
❤
Has anyone ever accidentally burned / scorched a piece of driftwood when trying to boil it? Is it safe to put into the aquarium?
It is not safe to put burnt wood in an aquarium
I’ve been boiling my drift wood for two days and the water is still red.
0:11 🤭🤭🤭
Bruh
Mines soaking for a week still floats
What type of wood is it?
@@LongIslandFishGuy not sure got it from another farmer but it hard as hell
@@LongIslandFishGuy How are we supposed to tell what type of wood it is?
I was told to not worry about water conditioner when soaking the wood because the chlorine in the water can help kill bacteria
It can’t hurt, just make sure you use water conditioner after adding the wood into the aquarium just to be safe!
The water turning brown really isn’t what you should be worried about. It has insane effect on your ph
This is too much work lol I’ll stick with no wood❤
Why do you call it a tote it's a container
facial expression very distractive.....had to go back and watch over and over again to get the message.....
Are you ok?
