The Third way

  • The only bit about the health care industry which lives up to its name is "industry" - The NHS is arrogant, sluggish and views the patient as a data set. The Private sector on the other views the patient as a cash cow.
There is a desperate need for a 3rd way.

The overworked & thinly spread care workers are by design.
There are huge monies in the NHS most of which goes to admin & private partners .

What a horror story. I'm in Australia and in NSW, the state I live in the public health system is also underfunded and waiting times are long BUT on every occasion that I have turned up at a public hospital with heart problems I have been examined immediately and treated very promptly.

While it is true that you can be "seen for free in the ER" (in the U.S.) it may or may not be "immediate". Additionally, your "care" is "one size fits all" - if you want to submit to their "recommendations" of blood thinners (you'll stroke out), beta blockers, pacemakers, etc, you will likely live, but your quality of life will be poor. On the other hand, if you want to THRIVE in the face of challenges with your heart, YOU must be your best advocate. Bravo Dr. Gupta!

Your compassion and validation of the suffering happening to countless people is truly touching my soul. It’s just beyond comprehension that we have the technology to provide medical care and yet the general public suffer. We the people are turned away and sent home from emergency services and told to follow up with our primary care doctor. At best it’s 2-3 months waiting for an appointment. How many people have died while waiting? Thank you for creating a new service that can help those in your area. The problem is global. Something really needs to change in the whole medical system. In Thailand, my wife went to see my cardiologist without an appointment. She went before 8 and had blood tests and other tests and was given medication all by 11am. She's going for a follow up tomorrow.
The cost was around 8,000 baht £175.
I suggest getting a flight to Thailand where you can see a specialist immediately and have a small holiday at the same time. Hospital costs can be very expensive as well as operations. However, following a consultation, you can get a very accurate estimate of what it will all cost. Better than waiting to die.

My BP started to go low and my cardiologist told me to reduce the meds. I reduced them to zero and don't take them any more. I monitor my BP and heart rate which appears higher due to the Afib but has also become lower.
I thought I would have to take the meds for the rest of my life and was warned against rebound.
I have stopped carbs and started mild intermittent fasting.
I haven't seen my cardiologist in a while because I'm living in Portugal.
At 76, I know my valves are leaky and my heart isn't perfect but the BP is normal. I do regular excercise riding my E-Bike but obviously have to rest if I over exert. Am I taking risks?

Sorry for your loss for Father and friend. I love that you are trying new ways to be helpful to those who need health care. My concern is that the third way is using the original understaffed and overworked people in the system already. Or is the expectation that private hospitals, etc have a lot more time for it to work. I know that private healthcare insurance is magical when cutting down times for specialists tests and appointments, etc. but surely there is a limit too. Would that soon become priced out of reach for the poorer end of the community. You are very dear to this community. Please continue to be the caring doctor that you are. ❤

I agree with your overall sentiments regarding the NHS as a whole. Major reform is required as a lot of money and resources are wasted - 'diversity managers' on £50k+ for example.
The public also need to take responsibility for their health and stop wasting NHS time with bullshit trips to A&E and not attending GP/hospital appointments. Fines for time wasters should be introduced and access to interventions limited if your ailments are entirely self inflicted (i.e. you're morbidly obese via dietary choices but then need a new hip etc).
There's no 'easy fix' and maybe we need to get really tough with those who abuse their bodies but expect the NHS (and tax payer) to pick up the pieces.

Thank you Dr Gupta. I am fortunate to have insurance that covers my cardiologist but I know there are many who do not. A good friend of mine is a Swiss cardiologist who may be willing to help. I will forward your video to his personal phone. Thank you again !!!! You are a remarkable doctor.

You have such a big heart. Your father and friend would be so proud of you. Great job on getting this off the ground. Hopefully, you will prove it as a viable option during the 3-month trial run so it can continue to help cardiac patients forever.

I live in the U.S. with our own set of issues with healthcare; but it is wonderful to hear that you are trying to be a part of finding solutions instead of going along with what they have in place. I hope that you can make a difference for everyone in your country who needs for healthcare to be about humanity not profit.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your friend. The healthcare system is very frustrating at times. here in the USA we have high premiums and also even for the elderly with Medicare. This is very sad. Thank you for voicing your concerns as they are very valid especially in a health care system that is run for profit. I am a former, now retired nurse in the USA. Your solution sounds wonderful and if I lived in the UK, I would definitely do it. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Gupta.

Oh, well done! I'm so sorry about your friend, but what an excellent initiative! May it prosper and flourish.
Something I'd love to see happen is a new type of community GP - working privately but locally, on a subscription scheme; whereby a GP would take on a group of patients all regularly paying in to the scheme to provide the GP with a sensible wage. This would ensure stability and continuity of care, which I believe is a foundation stone of clinical excellence.

Impressive outcome! How refreshing to have such a wonderful example of walking the walk instead of the much more common scenario. If I were in the same country, I would be all over this offer - have been dealing with some serious cardiovascular issues and am very disappointed by the standard approach offered as a 'solution'. On a more positive note, the whole situation has given me the unwavering drive to leave no stone unturned from a lifestyle standpoint, taking diet and exercise to levels I would have never believed were a possibility for me to achieve, let alone enjoy, before.
You have chosen a perfect way to honour your dad and friend. May you find great success and fulfillment with this endeavour. Take care, dear sir.

So very sorry for your loss. This is absolutely unacceptable. This would never, ever have happened in Italy. Without going into too much detail your friend would have had the choice of three options. Something similar happened to me and I was immediately admitted to hospital. Even if I hadn't I would have received an appointment with my GP on the same day or I could have walked into the local hospital without an appointment. I am shocked and saddened that this is happening in the UK in this day and age😢😢

Please tell this to the Americans that think only private health care works. There are public systems in Europe like the Italian and French ones that are brilliant!

Dear Sanjay, I was sad to hear about your friend’s death and I am sad that so many people are similarly unable to get the healthcare they need in our broken system. I feel inspired by your work. You know what you are talking about, you have the ability to think things through clearly, you have a big heart and you are fearless in your willingness to speak the truth as you see it. These are the very qualities that are needed if we are to find a way forward. I hope that your new venture succeeds, but even if it doesn’t I don’t think you will give up! Your love for your father is evident and I am sure that he would be very proud of you.

What a wonderful idea, Dr. Sanjay! This plan is born out of genuine care, love and respect and will prosper. 🙏🏻 Something wonderful happened with the original NHS and it can and will happen again. I am sure that many people would also be interested in paying for a general check-up package during which BP & bloods are taken and heart issues looked out for. I’d love to get my cardiovascular system checked out and do have private health insurance but you have to do everything through your GP first and getting an appointment is a major issue. Our cars get better health check-ups than their owners. Time for that to change. May God bless your venture!
