Heroes 5 made towns like no one else .
The biggest problem with homm5.5 is that it presents you this juicy carrot of very needed quality of life improvements- AI makes their turns faster, you can alt-tab in the middle of ending the turn without the game pausing itself for no reason, you have direct access to the skillwheel within the game... And then hits you with a nasty barbed stick covered in shit, of a Completely Unnecessary Rebalance Made Specifically For The Sake of Having Bigger Numbers.
Homm5's vanilla balance is amazing, imo even better than that of Heroes 3, fight me, and Homm5.5 ruins it, at best in a few rare cases, it's inoffensive and non-perceivable- ie. they could've just not rebalanced it at all, and nobody would've noticed.
At worst it
1. Completely ruins entire branches of magic (especially light and dark magic since they're very buff/debuff heavy and those were fucked over the most)
2. Completely recreates the entire skillwheel for no reason, changing the original faction-specific abilities, making even 'normal abilities' like offence, defence, logistics, and schools of magic more or less exclusive to certain hero types (on top of also changing and overcomplicating those abilities)
3. Creates more hero classes, without making it clear that it does so, what exactly that means, and how they're different- H3 hero classes are clear and simple: there's a fighter and a wizard, in 9 different flavours. Everyone instinctually understands what that means: fighters get more attack/defence stats and more combat-oriented abilities, wizards get more power/knowledge stats and magic-related abilities. Sure, some hero classes can't get some abilities- but those are rare and far in between; everyone can get logistics, offence, defence, wisdom, most schools of magic, everyone can get *overwhelming majority* of abilities, even if they're unlikely to get some of them. It's the same way in HOMM5, in fact, in HOMM5 every hero can get every secondary ability, even if they're unlikely to do so, they can. NOT IN HOMM5.5. Every Hero class literally can't get almost half the secondary skills present in the game- and there is no way of telling, without going to the skillwheel.
4. Makes certain units useless/a pain in the ass to get- especially all tier 6 units, since in 5.5 they require rare resources, which in many cases makes them harder to get than tier 7 units, on the part of their higher weekly growth, or straight up impossible to get in some campaign missions, where you just don't have access to that type of mine, because the original game designers didn't put it there, because they calculated that the free-standing resource pick ups will be enough: In case of high-value tier 6 units like Pit Fiends from Inferno or Wights from Necro you can swallow it because those units are so essential they're still worth it- but Sylvan's Treants, or Stronghold's Wyverns?
In Vanilla if you had money to buy them they were still useable, because at worst they were a statstick/meatshield, but now that you possibly can't recruit them even when you have the gold? Or they require the same resource needed to build the building for your faction's tier 7 unit, like in case of Haven? Nah you just skip them altogether, maybe build the tier6 building later and let them gather just in case, but that still can fuck over the entire faction's balance.
5. Overcomplicating units- everything past tier 3 has 20 abilities in this mod, some of the units feel like they were re-made by someone who needs to watch subway surfers AND minecraft parkour under every video; modders, take your adderall *before* you start making game-balance decisions.
None of these changes should be in a mod that claims to be an improvement over the original vision of the game- creators of this mod should either also make "HOMM5.4" without any balance changes, only quality of life improvements, or change the name of the mod- because as it stands, it's a false advertisement.

Also, as a heroes 5 fan. Why the fuck did they allow you to play campaign heroes, but then give them different skins? I get the walking speed is annoying but damn dude. Demon orlando, veyer, demon sovereign, alaric and giovanni all do not have their unique models used which simply drives me up a wall

You are spot on, I would love see Hota of Heroes 5. Just fast working, with some quality of life like splitting into 1s or artifact sets and some bug fixes. This is Wog bullshit that you can't even opt-out, more doesn't mean better if it's just for the sake of more.
H5.5 is awesome; the skillwheel and - some - special abilities are really insane and powerful !!!

I played the hell out of vanilla HoMM 5 but have never tried this mod (tried to once but couldn't get it to work.) Might as well try again after seeing this.
I like that this game brings more identities to the factions (balance aside, I'm looking at you skeleton archers.) Too bad that it was the beginning of Ubisoft era.
Yeah i wish homm5 was connected to the other games, and it would be cool if homm6 didn't exist.

My favorite part of Heroes 5 is the Vaping Wizards town. Very inspired. xD They were ahead of their time.

I noticed this mod adds a lot of extra music too, which is good because H5 has good music but becomes repetitive. I heard music from H2, H6, and some remix of the H3 Rampart theme.

I thought to try 5.5, but the skill changes and how much spongier everything is really discourages me. I wish I could just play 5 in widescreen.

No in Heroes 6 its was really great that you get Might Power and Magic Power for Heroes and for the units separately! If you have a magic type unit it can be buffed only by Magic Power and here is Magic Resistance (Magic Defense and Might Defense) also! Its was a really great thing you can buffed you up with many magic resistance if you want and can. Also you can buff up your magic or Might units which do you want! Tactically it was really great! Also the campaign of Heroes 6 is really hard and way better than Heroes 1-2-3-7 campaigns but may be not better than H4-5 campaigns.

Also yes Heroes 7.5 mod is really great sadly ist sometimes still freezing in online multiplayer in final battles it seems. You have 11 units per factions and 8 what you can build if you choose from them. 13 factions now! Bosses, new arenas, artifacts, spells etc. And skill wheel where you can choose from skills its different with each heroes. They borrow this to Heroes 5.5 mod but you can set it also to random skills mode per maps if you want then you can see the skill wheel like in H5.5. Also there are many returning Heroes 3, 5 units and heroes and spells and artifacts. On Hot Seat mode though its not freezing or in skirmish. Also the factions skills in Heroes 6-7 are really great! Each is powerful if you use it and level up it well also unique. Also in H7 you can hit from back and side for bonus damages flanking
This game needs a graphical mod more than anything. The user interface and portraits look really bad.
homm5 is still a buggy mess for me that zeroes out once per hour for me with the newest patches without mods. It was just unplayable. But the times I played it was fun but after a time it got unbearable. I don't know how it's today but 2 years ago or so it was still very bad for me.
Musics mainly from Heroes 6 where they remade some H2-3-5 themes with new instruments. Also in H6-7 there are boss musics because in H6 campaigns bosses comes! :) Also in H7.5 mod multis . Griffins do the same in H6 as in H5 but they are as a tier 4-5. approximately there :)

The big mistake in H4 was making each creature stack have its own map movement energy. The biggest mistake for H5 was going way, way, WAAAYYY too far with complicating the heck out of everything. The 3D doesn't fit the style, either. 😕 Finally, omg, the V.O. work was pretty awful.
Homm5 just always looked way too generic. The game was also just slow paced for a homm game lucky if you capture a town in a month

Agreed. Ignoring the 3D situation, H5 is just infinitely more complicated, and it slows gameplay down by EONS. Besides, the music is bland and generic, the sounds are also boring, and everything looks messy, muddled, and convoluted.
H4's major mistake was making each creature stack have its own map movement speed, which made "hero trains" impossible. 🤮 All this did was slow the game down and it provided no additional challenge. 🙄 It was just tedious, boring, and annoying. Music and sounds were pretty good, though!
