This car is called "GR86x"(GR 86 cross). This car is made from the Toyota GT86 body parts with the Subaru WRX STI R4 rally car(GR/GV gen.) chassis & drivetrains.
yaris is lighter, shorter, and better platform for modern wrc which started in the late 90's early 00's with the focus and the 206 hatches (there were before hatches in the group b too, but those were really experimental monsters like Metro 6R4 and Renault 5 Turbo or Peugeot 205 T16 which were rear center engine beasts)
@@styleemusic the gr86 (2575mm) only has a 1.5 cm longer wheelbase than the gr yaris (2560mm) though. Now the WRC yaris has a wheelbase of 2511mm but the gr86 is substantially lower with its iconic lower centre of gravity. Although I guess the rally car has to be based of its road going variant, and making an awd turbo i4(regulation) gr86 would just not be worth it for toyota, even if they do have to race a little hamster/egg looking thing. Sad because the wrc86 concept from gt sport looks like the coolest thing ever and it would stand out from all the other hatches in wrc today.
The reason for the yaris in Wrc isn't because of size but because the engine has to be transversely mounted in a fwd orientation not longitudinal. as in a rwd engine orientation.
What gt86 is this one? That's not the cs-r3, it looks like the 4x4 one they drove last year in Finland.. They are developing the Yaris WRC so what spec is this car for?
I think they've put old impreza wrc in to gt86, sounds similar to. I belive this is 2l engine as Tommi does not rev it much, car also has old imprezas gravel wheels on. Last rally finland they were driving gt86 with impreza R4 drive and engine. So my theory would ba a logical upgrade. I think/hope Tommi will scrap Yaris project and make gt86 wrc it would make the championship more diverse. I also think gt86 has beter potencial than yaris
richard slo I don't think they'll scrap the Yaris project, as they are still testing it. Maybe they are carrying over this other project waiting for the official 2017 new regulations, as a B plan, or more likely/hopefully they are developing a wrc2 car (R4 or R5), that would be great too
+richard slo umm im pretty sure GT86 and BRZ both are using boxer engine doe?.. its like Toyota design the exterior of the car, and subaru design the engines and others ?

I'd prefer to see and hear this developed as Toyota's WRC rather than a Yaris.

Longer wheelbases add on to on stage times, sucks.
The yaris is a joke imo, nobody wants that car unless you're a hipster.

@@rustcohle3803 as a road car, then you may have a point. However, if Toyota wanted a competitive rally car, the Yaris is a good choice.
This car has a lot of charm as a rallycar, but they'll choose Yaris because it's smaller =(
Yea i know thats stupid i really wanted to see gt86 in WRC, but in the other hand if you want to win rallies car look doesn't matter.
+chzz this one reminds me of the bug eye Celica gt4

Last time i cheched, the reason was another one: the engine must be a 4-in-line, the GT86 has a boxer
Sadly, that's part of the rules of todays WRC cars.
Don't get me wrong the Yaris WRC is awesome but this would have looked 10 times better flat through Monte Carlo!
The WRC need to have 3 categories
FWD, RWD and 4WD.
The RWD are spectacular.
Its à gt86 4x4 AWd
Päivämäärä väärin, 20.8.2015 on vielä tulevaisuudessa.
a class for cars like this in international rallyes will be amazing...
I Guess That Can Be A Production Class Car!
Not exactly; the production class must have the same drive wheels as the showroom model; the standard 86 has RWD only.
This car is rwd though.

R3 class
The GT86 we deserve :(
It looks 4wd and if it's turbo charged it's basically the engine in the WRX? So, will we see an updated BRZ soon?
Fast forward today, 2021 BRZ still rwd
@@dorsalispenile9891 which is a good thing really. :)

I dont know they might be getting ready to ender wrc with the haris and wrc2 with the gt86......if that happens it would be insane
awesome the boxer engine is back
shit engine... new 2JZ.. now this car is too slow

No spec sheets for this car?
Tommi makinen legend...
Mäkinen esitteli ton auton viime vuoden Jyskälän rallin yhteydessä :)
HOW ? How with this chassis, the 4x4 is possible ?
With the flat-4 it's impossible ! Or maybe with an other engine, but I can't understand it !
+corollag6wrc this have nothing with the engine, only drivetrain was modified
+Nookly sure, but the front wheels are just near the engine. So no space for the drivetrain...
+corollag6wrc You can put the drivetrain under the engine ;)
that little guy fast as hell
This feels like a very uncanny Impreza
Finally something with boxer engine
Wow amazing car
Toyota! Make a gt86 awd, 250-270 hp, supercharged (will exept turbo) that is all!
Toi Gt86:sen boxermoottori tuo mieliini A ryhmän Subaru Legacy mallin :)
Mikä tie kyseessä?
Uuraisilla...
Just make this car!! Please Toyota??
engine from subaru BRZ
Jan Pastor Which is exactly the same as the engine from the Toyota 86.
Jan Pastor Also the same chassis. Just the body in white is different.
Keith Holtham The body is made by Toyota, the engine by Subaru and Scion is involved somehow i think
***** Nope, Scion is just another brand by Toyota made for USA, just like Lexus.
Jan Pastor Hyundai made something I think, but I do not remember exactly what
Sounds like a Group A
0:19
gok
odd rally car
Why make it 4x4... thats boring
To be competitive. It doesn't really matter though, they're going with the Yaris anyway
