The History of Albuquerque, New Mexico

- Albuquerque’s history is filled with false starts, and foreboding events. It began with violence and deception, but has grown into a burgeoning and diverse city that dwarfs all others in New Mexico. Most people only know it as a place where Walter White made blue meth in Breaking Bad, or where Bug Bunny always took a wrong turn, but Albuquerque has a fascinating past that’s way more than I can even say here.

The city’s nicknames are The Duke City and Burque, both of which reference its 1706 founding as La Villa de Alburquerque in Nuevo México, as an outpost on El Camino Real for the Tiquex and Hispano towns in the area (such as Barelas, Corrales, Isleta Pueblo, Los Ranchos, and Sandia Pueblo).[5] Since the city’s founding, it has continued to be included on travel and trade routes including Route 66, Interstate 25, Interstate 40, and the Albuquerque International Sunport. The population census-estimated population of the city as 560,218 in 2018, it is the principal city of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, which has 915,927 residents as of July 2018.[6] Albuquerque's Metropolitan statistical area is the 60th-largest in the United States. The Albuquerque MSA population includes the cities of Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Placitas, Los Lunas, Belen, South Valley, and Bosque Farms, and forms part of the larger Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Las Vegas combined statistical area, with a total population of 1,171,991 in 2016.

You should look into the Cristoval Larranaga he brought the smallpox vaccination to New Mexico.
"It began with violence and deception..." Hasn't changed much...

2 more bodies found on Christmas day. I'm pretty sure that makes 79 homicides for the year.

The entire USA is a violent country. Nothing unique to NM.
Yep
it's crazy to think that the Great Vince Created an Entire City just to create his Show
It's a little sad how we as a state we have lots of crime here and are one of the most forgotten states. There might also be a lot of hate but new Mexico has a beautiful side too.
After travelling around the last few years, I've noticed the whole USA seems to be crime ridden and in decline. The good thing about NM not being noticed means it is affordable to live here. You don't want to pay $3,000 for a shoebox with no washer like in other cities.

(Also, if anyone is ever in the ABQ area, I recommend Garcia's for New Mexican food over Frontier, just personal preference)
Just the one that downtown on 4th the one one the westside by LBJ middle school is so shitty
@@olivertapia3519 I can see that to an extent(I still advocate for them over frontier tho)

Sarah Vigil el Bruno’s!! For sure.
I love Albuquerque and New Mexico in general.
Still have friends and relatives there, and still visit often.
Moved to Albq three times and used to own a house in the "war zone".
Got my first speeding ticket southbound on Louisiana approaching Gibson in a Studebaker pickup truck. :)
I love how New Mexico has so much Spanish history! Not even California, Texas, or Arizona have as much Spanish history as New Mexico
"best place to get new mexican food".... [*Cries in Sadie's*]
Yeah I don't understand the hype of Frontier there are so many places that are way better when I think of New Mexican food Frontier doesn't even cross my mind.
Red Chile - El Modelo
green Chile - El Bruno’s
Lived here all my life and those are my favorites
But there are too many good places to eat here (Not El Pinto)
😂
I hear people complaining all the time nowadays that Sadie's has gone downhill. But I can't imagine it's gotten worse than Frontier that's for sure. I only go to the (sort of) original 4th Street Sadie's (the real original bowling alley location doesnt exist anymore). And I haven't been in a while. But it was perfectly fine when I went within the last year ... When I think "New Mexican Food" I think Sadie's, 1000%, period.
Stuffed Sopapilla, with Spicy ground beef, all the fixings, and Green Chilé please :-D. And bring out an extra basket of Sopapilla's, fresh.
Alexander Herlan well, the REAL original Sadie’s was a walk up stand at Osuna and 2nd (my mom grew up on Montano between 2nd and 4th and always talked about the original location). I’m not a big fan of Sadie’s because I just feel like they just want to go for HOT and no other flavor to their Chile. I like my Chile more medium or medium-hot.
My family has some connections to Albuquerque's recent history. My father, George Morrison, was the city's first TV news anchorperson, doing the news at KOB in the 1950s and KOAT in the '60s. (between those stints, he lived in Indiana, where I was born). My Mom worked at Sandia air base, where they put the nuclear bombs on the missiles. Though she was an office worker, I can just hear, "Hi, honey. Have a hard day at armageddon?"
As a person who goes to UNM and goes to the history department, it’s such a prevalent use of this types of native style works.
Mesa Vista Hall is such a pain to navigate though xD
Would have gone there but Texas calls
Lived here all my life. Great job! Love to actually see New Mexico spoken of correctly 😇
Same! I love new Mexico! Besides the homicides every goddamn month
Commit coronavirus I think you mean everyday
Correctly??
I'm moving from Alaska to Taos NM in November, I've been watching your history of NM videos, keep up the good work man
I live in Albuquerque too!
And I love history
I'm gonna love this video 👀
I would love to see a map of Albuquerque growth as the suburbs started to pop up, post war.
Yes! I think suburban sprawl has led to a lot of ABQ’s current problems with traffic fatalities and lack of affordable housing
As a person from Albuquerque, I love the New Mexican culture, food, art, and scientific studies at the Los Alamos National Labatory, the first ever atomic bomb was detonated in Southeastern NM, and home for the birth of Smokey the Bear, plus, Albuquerque is on the Eastern Sandia Mountain Ridge, It is known as the East Mountains, I 40 cuts right through the Tjeras Canyon, Tjeras is a small village in the canyon, New Mexico is a beautiful state.
I think one additional thing that would have been worth mentioning about the culture is that the entire state is bilingual English and Spanish, in Albuquerque, you don’t even need to speak just English, you could speak just Spanish when out...there are signs, billboards, and even the public school system are all bilingual.
Could LATIN be the INBETWEEN language of Discourse? During party Time: the ghost of JOHN BELUSHI in Animal House: "TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!" or alternately TOGA= "TO GA.!": "TO GEORGIA!", that is southern GEORGIA, not RUSSIAN" Georgia, unless the NATIVE AMERICANS, on a war path choose to always "RUSH IN" to ALBURQUERQUE, New Mexico, after a Hollywood film-like POW WOW.
Thats amazing 👏 never knew that
Since when? I've lived here over 50 years and only the Mexicans from Mexico, are bilingual. My ex lived with his Mexican Grandmother, and they did not teach him the language. They wanted him to be American.
In a book titled "Two thousand miles on horseback" 1867 the writer James F. Meline, mentioned he rode from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. He wrote that it was a moslty wasted trip with just mud huts surrounded by pigs and chickens. He was glad to return to Santa Fe. The railroad arrived in 1880 and things changed.
I subbed for 3 reasons first reason I live in New Mexico second reason you have Smedley Butlers War is a Racket and third your videos are great.. Keep up the great work!
Are you going to continue making NM history videos I love these?
i hope he does. he seems very thorough and makes his information super digestable. id love to hear a lot more about the native people.
I moved to Albuquerque a year ago, and I'm still not fully used to living here.
I've driven through ABQ many times, but haven't spent alot of time there. Spent some time in santa fe and absolutely loved it. Truly a unique place

Was hoping you would answer the question - ' Who was Juan Tabo and what did he do to have a street named after him? ' Otherwise, good video.
I've seen a lot of guesses, but no one named Juan Tabo sticks out for me
HAHAHA,
Good call,

He was likely the patriach of La Canada de Juan Taboso, a small 1700s-era town at the base of the Four Hills.
@@MichaelSmith-sd9kz Never heard of this ... Thanks!
"sometimes you just gotta learn how to mis-pronounce correctly"...the americans probably thought "sometimes you just gotta learn how to mis-spell correctly".
It's cool there are people in the us that think new mexico is still part of mexico.
Wow
This is one of those words you can't pronounce correctly until you hear someone else say it right

I remember how in Elementary school, they would press us on spelling Albuquerque right. No one was able to but after years in Elementary, I got it down. Many locals struggle. It's pretty sad, haha.

Fun to watch this after living in ABQ for a few months for an engineering internship. Thanks for the video!
I Learned Alot From This Video Thanks 😊
Fun to watch. My great- grandfather immigrated to Albuquerque around 1890 from Hoganes Sweden. Green to brown to say the least. My recently born (dec 5) grandson is 5th gen Albuquerquean - not too bad for an Anglo, huh - but nothing for an indigenous. Despite all the negatives, obviously Burque and New Mexico in general, have a lot to offer. Thanks...
Sorry partner,
Anglo means English.
And as I am Swedish German and Shawnee. You and I are not English.
New Mexico is the best !
No place is perfect, but I am staying here as a New Mexican, for the better I pray.
Well, since I'm descended from Washington line on my dad's side, we'll consider that "Anglo " - however out here in NM, Anglo is sort of a catchall term meaning, basically, "whitey". So I guess I qualify on both counts!
We used to be over fifty percent white, not any more.
Great video! Born and raised in Albuquerque.
Hate living in ABQ but love this video. Really great job.
that was Awesome! thanks for putting it out there! I am from Albuquerque

I’d love to see more New Mexico history videos! There’s a lot of interesting history here that doesn’t get a lot of national attention, like the Pueblo revolt.
They always talk about the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 but never about the Revolt of 1847 against the Americans.
"And then the Texans invaded" *shakes fist*
Seriously, though, this is great. I grew up in Albuquerque, although I was not born there. I never fully appreciated the place until I moved away for college. Now I look on it with fondness, flaws and all, and I look forward to taking my kids back there once air travel is safe again. Also, I was required to take NM History in school and I absolutely hated it, but that was mostly down to a bad teacher. Your presentation here was much more engaging.
I've Been To Albuquerque, Nice Place. Also Pueblo Architecture Is Really Cool.
Very informative and professional presentation. Many thanks for the time you put into this bountiful presentation.

Good video. For the most part it's pretty accurate but, Frontier is not the best New Mexican food. I'd have to say Little Anita's or Sadies would be the best and, you gotta try taco burgers from Bob's Burgers.
Ja,
The frontier is college kid food..
And not even close to Real New Mexican food.
Rio Rancho was started as a scam by King, later Governor King.
Nah it's Kathy's, or El Modelo
Nope you’ll are wrong... grandmas food beats em all!!!! That’s the trick to good New Mexican food. You get it at grandmas house!!

As a Burqueno, I approve 100%. Great job!! Really enjoyed your video.
I have to disagree, frontier is good but there's a few that rival it: El Modelo, Los Cuates, El Charritos, Garcias, Bob's Burgers, Abuelitas, Wecks, are a few I would recommend among others. Loved the video BTW, will watch it a couple more times.
I've lived in NM for 52 years, love the place and love this video. Thank's.
Albuquerques economy would probably be doing a little better if the Westside had any locally owned businesses on it.
So then you haven't been out here in what, 25 years?
The state legislature will not fix the tax code. I personally know many businesses that want to move here. But will not, the state taxes machinery yearly. All so taxes labor twice.
I our own a Locksmith business. The state tax code is a scam, the politicians are still terribly corrupt.
And I love this State !
My hometown I love it I miss it and I'm stuck in Louisiana you think it's bad there you haven't gone anywhere else I guarantee you every major city has her problems
i’m from houston but have also lived in baltimore, chicago, and philadelphia. i currently live in albuquerque and i love it! its so unique and love how close hiking is. people who focus on the negatives will only find more negativity. been here for a good amount of time now and i have never had a car break in, or been in any bad situations. i was more fearful while in a big city.
taylor /: where do u recommend hiking?
Alonso's Passion i really like the elena gallegos open space park off the tramway, it’s a 2 dollar entrance fee. i’ve hiked at the cibola national forest, santa fe national forest, and carson national forest (2.5 hr away) and they all are extremely beautiful and less visited. i find everywhere i go on the alltrails app and just look for trails at my skill level and with good ratings/views.
I was stick in Columbia, SC and it was HORRIBLE. I now live and love ABQ! So unique and beautiful. I love hiking and biking in the mountains without driving 2 hours!!
Thank you for this beautiful history lesson. I LOVE history in all its forms, and its wonderful to see a video about my home.
ive been making preparations to move to ABQ and came across this video, which lead me around your channel.
i like to learn about places before i go and ivr traveled most of the continental USA. New Mexico is very attractive to me. i cant wait to move and live the rest of my life there. thanks for putting out such an interesting and detailed video about its history. i cant wait to do my photography around the state.
Great job!
Clicked on this video with mainly hate and resentment in my heart for Albuquerque and after convincing myself to watch it with the second though that maybe you could help me to not have as much hate for NM, and I’m glad I watched. I’m now leaving with more understanding, and not as much focus on the crime, poor living standards that many people are okay with down there, the third world feel basically, and I hope to keep doing this with any place or thing that I don’t exactly like. Anger is just not good to hold in 👏 👏 👏.
I have come to see that third world conditions exist all over the USA ... Every time it rains, the Hudson river in NYC overflows with raw sewage 🤢🤮
Hahaha I'm so surprised you have something good to say about NM. Everyone I know that left hates it and will never go back. I personally don't live there, but I have a lot of family that does and I personally love it. Albuquerque is fantastic.
It's too bad some people have discouraging things to say about it, but I guess that's what makes everybody different. We all have our preferences. I went to elementary school in Arizona. But my Junior High and High School years were in Albuquerque. When I was old enough, I moved back to Arizona thinking it was _"home."_ Then I realized that Albuquerque was my home. Now my fiancé and I are thinking of where we would like to live. And we have yet to find a place that we like better than here.
The weather is wonderful. We get all the seasons, but none of them to the extreme. We don't have to worry about severe weather like hurricanes. And certainly no earthquakes. I've been back for 30 years now.
It's a fantastic place, IMO.
Im from Las Cruces and lived in ABQ for 10 years... I absolutely miss ABQ wish i could move there again someday
Thank you. This was great
I spent about a week in Albuquerque in 2009. My friend and I were looking for something to do so we went to the Unser racing museum. We had heard of the Unsers but we weren't super into racing really, just looking to kill some time. We walk in the front door and there's a friendly old guy greeting people but we didn't pay much attention to him. Round the corner and get to the first exibit and see the pictures and that's when I realized we'd just blown off Al Unser in his own museum.
