Very sympathic and clear info! One month ago I was pike fishing with my #8 rod and hooked a European Catfish with 1,67 Meters and 27 KG. Somehow I managed to land it - was able to walk with the fish. But there was no question about putting the fish on the reel or not 😂 My gear made an excellent job.
Good advice, Tom. If you DON'T let a bigger fish 'tell you' by running and taking up the slack, and instead try to reel up the slack, you increase the likelihood of releasing tension on the fish, and, especially with the barbless hooks most of us use, is a good way to lose that fish.
Unless a fish takes you to the reel with a run, hand -line it. Over and over again I've seen folks lose fish trying to reel in slack. It's my biggest pet peeve.
