Yeah this was easily one of the best clips on filmmaking i've ever heard, almost a modern day version of Robert Rodriguez's Rebel Without a Crew. Have been in love with Gareth's direction and style ever since Godzilla (super underrated monster movie imo). Hope to have a story of my own to tell someday. Thanks for posting this.
It might just be down to going to the same school as him, albeit 20 or so years later, but Gareth is one of my favorite directors of the past few years, he's so inspiring but manages to remain down to earth. I'm not someone looking to go into film, but this is such a motivating talk that applies to any walks of life.
Thank you SXSW so much for sharing this. Having been in the audience it was one of the most humble, inspiring, funny, emotional and overall beautiful speeches I have seen. So much to get from this not only for film fans and makers - truly a great experience for everybody who is pursuing dreams. I loved watching it again as soon as I saw it was here.
As an aspiring Filmmaker this hands down one of the most inspiring videos I've watched. As a fan of Gareth and his work I've naturally watched/listened to anything I can get my hands on, whether it be Blu-Ray features or interviews online. However this was different, It was truly fascinating to hear such a in-depth insight into his life and filmmaking career. I can only hope < (Pun intended) to be half the Director he is one day. Thank you SXSW for uploading this.
Great speech. Funny and inspirational. Gareth is a really good storyteller, and I'm not writing about the movies, but the way he talks too. Gareth is not Steven Spielberg and that is great thing! He is himself! Can't wait to see more of him!
Gareth tells it how it is, how narrow minded the industry is...especially the BBC, you're just VFX artist! :( But what I do take from this is Gareth's passion, it has certainly inspired me at 59:40. :) "You have succeeded, doesn't matter what the outcome is. The second you start filming, you did something with your life".
That Starbucks barista has watched this/may watch this someday and will remember writing that odd name on a cup and shit themselves when they realize they inadvertently named a planet in Star Wars.
Interestingly similar career pathway into Directing to Neil Blomkamp. Both of these guys can do amazing things if you just give them the budget and get out of the way...I think Rogue One as an experience maybe broke a few golden boughs for Gareth after Lucasfilm/DISNEY stole his film from him. I would have loved to have seen his personal love letter to lucas, even if it would be an R18 star wars war film. Sadly, Disney wanted another princess with a confused back story instead.
Edwards is a great director. He did good in Godzilla and did an amazing job in Rogue One
One of the most inspiring talks about filmmaking and following your dreams I have ever heard. Gareth Edwards is THE MAN.
