A lot of people actually misunderstand this level. The stage is actually a race. You have to outspeed the Medusa, if it catches you and grabs you, it means you aren't going fast enough.
+TheShadowlord90 Check the map, you notice how the level forks into two? You have to confuse it into thinking you're going up one path and then outspeed it to the other.
Ayla Kurone Except one problem. The Medusa cheats. Due to the way spawning works, the Medusa can delete itself from the game, and respawn directly in your path.
Then you realize it is just an asshole who throws you back a wholeass level for shits and giggles. At first, I was terrified and fascinated. *Later on, I had a vendetta against it.* 🤬
TRIVIA: the Giant Medusa model sprite is based on the actual real life giant Jellyfish called "Etizen Kurage". Googled today the word "Red Jellyfish". WARNING: Extremely creepy pictures.
The "easiest" way to beat this stage, even on Hard, is to arc your jumps around the Medusa so you land back inside the tubes, and then swim like hell. Problem is that you have to do it PERFECTLY and not gain to much momentum or you travel through your intended end point and end up back in the Skyway.
In my mind I had beat this game as a kid. I was just bragging to my bf about it. Then I described the final boss as "tubes of water in the air with a jellyfish that knocks you out of them, it's like rainbow road but way harder" so I looked it up on youtube just to find out I stopped playing this game after Level 7.
Freaking Medusas. Rage inducing giant flying jellyfish monsters. If they don't scare you, you're probably yelling at the screen for how much they love to toss you around.
Just thinking about it suddenly reminded me of the bird level... my god some things are best left forgotten, the rage! Kudos to anyone who legitimately beat this monster of a game, i think I got a few levels into the dark future before the 32bit era entered my house and saved my sanity.
This is the level my brothers and I were never able to beat so we just gave up on the game and it collected dust for over 20 years until I finally picked it up and played again… then it collected dust again after not being to beat this level again 😂
I could never get past this level as a kid. I didn't know if I had to kill it or just race past it and it scared me so much. This level was utter DEATH.
Ecco: Can I come through your sky... water slide... tube... whatsits? Medusa: Pay the toll! Ecco: Well, how much is it? Medusa: One delicious dolphin. Ecco: Um... Medusa: You look delicious yourself. Ecco: No! No. Not delicious. At all. A bit gamey, really, had a spot of fin droop, terrible eating, wouldn't advise it. HEY, LOOK OVER THERE! Medusa: What? What? Hey! Get back here! ...Rinse and repeat until Megadrive hits wall or you strike lucky.
Oh man, i know I'm late here to the comment community, but mad props to you dude. I hated this frickin stage with a violet passion and had screaming rage quits for the longest time. Likely, i will try again, hell i might even post it here, through an emulator. Thanks for the inspiration!
Shit gave me a heart attack as a kid...palms sweating, drinking massive cups of coffee behind my dad's back, (He obviously saw the empty pot) and I was saying fuck like a sailor. Hardest game I've ever played besides DMC 3 on hard mode.
LMAO WOW I used to love this game! I was watching this with my baby boy *9 months* and telling him how Medusa scared the heck out of me when I was a kid and everytime Medusa showed up on the screen, he cried out haha.
@laughingfurry I bought a dreamcast in order to play Defender of the Future, and though it had some nice elements of its own it failed as a sequel to Ecco 1 and 2, I really wanted to get some answers on the questions they left us with; did Ecco join the Atlantians? In which time? And where did the Asterite come from? Did almost all life on Earth indeed come from it?
Oh yes, the future is so wonderful and the world is at ecological peace! Except for THE HUGE FLYING MONSTER TRYING TO THROW YOU BACK TO THE GROUND. You'd think the asterite could tell that fucking thing to BACK THE HELL OFF AND LET YOU THROUGH. But then you might finish a level with a blood pressure lower than 170/110, which the developers just wouldn't approve of.
That quite honestly looked like the most infuriating boss ever. The whole time I was like "what the hell can you do?" yet somehow you managed to beat the level. I think I'm glad I never played this, seems aggravating :P
@TheDutchGhost Yes, the Vortex aliens. They're somewhat unsettling to me now. You can only imagine how I was with the sea of darkness and the machine way back.
Does anyone remember a stage similar to this one but with a vortex squid looking thing with the black tentacles? I've never beaten that stage and it drove me to the point of never playing the game again. I've often wondered if there was ever an ending to the game or if the stage I was on was the last and that's why it was so hard.
Yeah, the last stage of the epilogue, right? I think it was called "City of Forever" and you had to follow those creepy vortex larva things that could insta-kill you. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.
@laughingfurry Yeah the Vortex aliens also scared the hell out of me the first time like in "Welcome to the machine", or the Vortex Queen. This large water filled room with a giant alien head in it, spawning Vortex creatures. I wish an Ecco 3 was made.
Yeah, I can't remember playing this level for the fun of it. I think it took me about a week to beat the game playing every night after work. But at least two of those days were spent on this level! I think that was the only time I actually beat it. :P
lol, this fight pissed me off, and its kinda funny watching this video knowing the person is probably sooo pissed off right now. even though its frustrating as hell, i still loved this fight/game
Bastard!!! I got the son of freak in the end but Blimming heck. Over & over for nearly about 2 weeks solid the first time lol. Both those games were no joke.
I don't know how I ever got through most of those games back in the day. If it weren't for cheat modes and the save anywhere option on the collection, I would have quit after the first level.
I could say it's a result of me getting older and my reflexes getting slower, but I think it has to do more with patience and use of time. It's just not as much fun getting by butt kicked as it used to be.
Im suprised i beat this level when i was a kid, no cheats. I remember my hand sweating a nd shaking from the adrenaline trying to dodge medusa while moving fast.
I have to admit, the first time I saw that fucking medusa, I freaked the fucked out and believe me, I never reached for the power button faster in my life. Mind you, I was 7 or 8 when I originally played this. :)
I hated that level with a vengeance, it made me want to kill anyone who would say 'You suck at this, this is easy' That level was enough to make any gamer make The Hulk timid in comparison.
@TheDutchGhost I bought mi dreamcast in order to play Sonic Adventure! But I loved Ecco. I was a huge fan of the first one and the DC version is amazing! I don´t have my dreamcast anymore but I have it on the PS2. It´s identicall!
There is no hard mode. There is only Ecco.
This game made me the man I am today. Bitter, fustrated and resentful.
Amazing music though.
A lot of people actually misunderstand this level. The stage is actually a race. You have to outspeed the Medusa, if it catches you and grabs you, it means you aren't going fast enough.
Doesn't make it any less frustrating! >
Amelia Bee
Well I know that. And not to mention it can also block you, which is total BS.
+TheShadowlord90 Check the map, you notice how the level forks into two? You have to confuse it into thinking you're going up one path and then outspeed it to the other.
Ayla Kurone
Except one problem. The Medusa cheats. Due to the way spawning works, the Medusa can delete itself from the game, and respawn directly in your path.
Ahh, this explains a lot.
this is graphically amazing for a genesis the scaling 3d effect and the shadow overlay all in for the graphics.
Okay, who wasn't freaked out the first time they met this boss?
It honestly scared the hell out of me when i first met it.
Then you realize it is just an asshole who throws you back a wholeass level for shits and giggles.
At first, I was terrified and fascinated. *Later on, I had a vendetta against it.* 🤬
This drove me to almost insanity as a kid, in fact I don't think I ever got passed this part. Job well done!
Maybe because whenever you fall in tube of medusa it sends you to the fucking sky tides!
16bit sega games were all about bringing the childhood mental breakdown

Easiest” in your scenario is severely subjective
@@mcoupe69 it takes a lot of practice but it can be done consistently
This level killed my childhood. Now I'm 29, still have my Genesis, and I still can't beat this without cheats. Le Sigh.
Rip.
This game is an awesome sequel
so many sore thumbs. so many broken controllers ;_;
I always thought this level was really interesting and creative (in an already interesting, creative game).
not to mention the music is incredible considering it used a yamaha synth chip from the late 80s.
Freaking Medusas. Rage inducing giant flying jellyfish monsters. If they don't scare you, you're probably yelling at the screen for how much they love to toss you around.
This level always scared me as shit...
Frustration incarcerated
experiencing this game as a kid makes me happy that I had a Genesis instead of a SNES
YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!
on steroids LOL
Hearing this music still raises my pulse rate to this day.
FUCK....THIS...LEVEL
Just thinking about it suddenly reminded me of the bird level... my god some things are best left forgotten, the rage! Kudos to anyone who legitimately beat this monster of a game, i think I got a few levels into the dark future before the 32bit era entered my house and saved my sanity.
It's a good thing I loved this freakin music, because ffs was it a pain to get past.
How did I EVER beat this level as a child?! Mind boggling.
Forgot all about how frustrating this thing was. What a relief after getting through such a stage
holy shit i understand why i passed a hard childhood when i tried ecco again
Wow. Really catchy! And honestly, this looks quite fun, if frustrating. I do hope the Ecco series is continued sometime...
i hate this stage..
once, i slammed my joystick to release my evil emotion
Life isn't hard.
Tube of Medusa is.
hahahahahahahaha
This is the level my brothers and I were never able to beat so we just gave up on the game and it collected dust for over 20 years until I finally picked it up and played again… then it collected dust again after not being to beat this level again 😂
@corollafrenzy
A dolphin that fights aliens and travels through time. Yeah, that's awesome.
and he went to atlantis and saved the planet
I could never get past this level as a kid. I didn't know if I had to kill it or just race past it and it scared me so much. This level was utter DEATH.
Ecco: Can I come through your sky... water slide... tube... whatsits?
Medusa: Pay the toll!

Future sea creatures: Watch out for the Medusa.
Me: Pfft. I know how to handle jellyfish.
Medusa:
Me: [shocked Pikachu face]
wow i remeber this level when i was young,
this level was a hardcore test to pass on hardcore
1:57
Perfectly in synch
My dude 😂
Dude.
SING at the medusa.
It drives it away for a moment
My singing drives anything away!
hated this level when I was a kid but bloody LOVED the music!
My sphincter tightens while playing this level -_-.
Oh man, i know I'm late here to the comment community, but mad props to you dude. I hated this frickin stage with a violet passion and had screaming rage quits for the longest time. Likely, i will try again, hell i might even post it here, through an emulator. Thanks for the inspiration!

Don't fall
Don't fall
Don't fall
Don't fall
Don't fall
Don't fall
LMAO WOW I used to love this game! I was watching this with my baby boy *9 months* and telling him how Medusa scared the heck out of me when I was a kid and everytime Medusa showed up on the screen, he cried out haha.
This fuckin stage...
Usually if I can't beat a game I get angry, relax, then go back and try 2beat it. But this game on this level, I gave up and didn't care!
@laughingfurry I bought a dreamcast in order to play Defender of the Future, and though it had some nice elements of its own it failed as a sequel to Ecco 1 and 2, I really wanted to get some answers on the questions they left us with; did Ecco join the Atlantians? @TheDutchGhost
I was more freaked by the vortex. This I really wanted to attempt since seeing it on the back of the cover. God, what a game.
This was the stage I could not get past when I was a kid.
Oh yes, the future is so wonderful and the world is at ecological peace!
Except for THE HUGE FLYING MONSTER TRYING TO THROW YOU BACK TO THE GROUND.

I always remember making it here for the first time and I was like "the fuck is this level?" and it took me a while to beat it.
@esoretal yup, then comes the auto-scroll section, gotta love it.
this stage was the hardest for me
“Medusa, you bitch” man haven’t said that in like 18 years...fuck I’m getting old.
That quite honestly looked like the most infuriating boss ever. The whole time I was like "what the hell can you do?" yet somehow you managed to beat the level. I think I'm glad I never played this, seems aggravating :P
I remember this being sooooooo hard when I was a kid. I think I only beat this part once. Should go back and give it a try.
Dude, she gave me a heart attack back when I played this game.
@TheDutchGhost
Yes, the Vortex aliens. They're somewhat unsettling to me now.
You can only imagine how I was with the sea of darkness and the machine way back.
gotta love the save anytime feature for playing this on sonics ugc
And if you died you went back a level!
I was so terrified of that jellyfish piece of shit when I was little
Does anyone remember a stage similar to this one but with a vortex squid looking thing with the black tentacles? I've never beaten that stage and it drove me to the point of never playing the game again. I've often wondered if there was ever an ending to the game or if the stage I was on was the last and that's why it was so hard.
what those things in Atlantis?
Yeah, the last stage of the epilogue, right? I think it was called "City of Forever" and you had to follow those creepy vortex larva things that could insta-kill you. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.
You were on the final stage.
@laughingfurry Yeah the Vortex aliens also scared the hell out of me the first time like in "Welcome to the machine", or the Vortex Queen.
This large water filled room with a giant alien head in it, spawning Vortex creatures.
I wish an Ecco 3 was made.
i can imagine how you cursed everytime that medusa tooked you back to the lower tubes again. lol
genuinely impressed. good work
Wow, trippy as hell.
Yeah, I can't remember playing this level for the fun of it. I think it took me about a week to beat the game playing every night after work. But at least two of those days were spent on this level! I think that was the only time I actually beat it. :P
This must be the level that Ecco defender of the future for PS2 and Dreamscast , used as idea for the level hanging waters
UP, DOWN, PAUSE, A, B C, B, C, A, C, A, B
and SKIP this level >_
@ReNNN Usmani wait theres an endgame treat?
lol, this fight pissed me off, and its kinda funny watching this video knowing the person is probably sooo pissed off right now. even though its frustrating as hell, i still loved this fight/game
gooooooordon bennet i remember the days of yelling at my tv until my mouth hurt! this level was the reason! :P lol
So who else was pissed off for having legitimately beating the game only to be accused of using cheat codes to do so "BY THE GAME"!?
Bastard!!! I got the son of freak in the end but Blimming heck. Over & over for nearly about 2 weeks solid the first time lol. Both those games were no joke.
@laughingfurry You mean the Vortex aliens?
OMG. This level made me throw my genesis controller SO MANY FUCKING TIMES. But the awesome music makes up for it.
Attention span decays in this era, personally I can't be bothered to even sit through a movie theater film anymore
This level will forever haunt me. It took me hours to do this shit!
Im suprised i beat this level when i was a kid, no cheats. I remember my hand sweating a nd shaking from the adrenaline trying to dodge medusa while moving fast.
Yup! That's exactly what laughingfurry meant!
That's probably not what happened the first time.
My favourite OST when I was a kiddy 6y
I have to admit, the first time I saw that fucking medusa, I freaked the fucked out and believe me, I never reached for the power button faster in my life. Mind you, I was 7 or 8 when I originally played this. :)
I used debug to pass this level, because honestly, this level was so goddamn infuriating.
I recreated this level in Mario Maker 2.
I think its uncleared still lol.
I have never finished this game without cheat codes because of this goddamn level. How did you do this on hard mode?!
@TheDutchGhost
As do I. Ecco 2 ended on such a big cliffhanger.
I may suck at this game and never go to level 4, but it is Ecco. A mother fuckin dolphin. How badass is that?
I hated that level with a vengeance, it made me want to kill anyone who would say 'You suck at this, this is easy'
That level was enough to make any gamer make The Hulk timid in comparison.
how was that background effect done?
From what I can tell, it is done through scaling.
"Hard Mode".... THERE'S A HARDER DIFFICULTY SETTING!?!?!? This game is already a contender for hardest game ever on normal...
когда носом в низ падаешь, жми "А".
Tzippa, Tzippa!
The graphic was fantastic for its time
Its better than most of todays wii games LOL
i think it was my level where i gave up
That thing ruined my childhood
Holy crap, does that look frustrating.
The password for this level should be FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I think I passed this once, difficult stage.
That fucking jellyfish
Man, I couldn't do this as a kid. XD
@TheDutchGhost I bought mi dreamcast in order to play Sonic Adventure! But I loved Ecco. I was a huge fan of the first one and the DC version is amazing! I don´t have my dreamcast anymore but I have it on the PS2. It´s identicall!
1994 was a good year
