In the last few years of internal combustion engine we really are seeing some fantastic cars. It's too late now though. I get the idea we're getting the tech that was being held back for years.
@@amh313 Volkswagen should build such unrestricted models a longer time ago along with other cool forgotten models like 'XL1 Sport' few years back.. but back then they were so big that didn't bother to listen to people needs.. meanwhile the ev punch catch-up & kicks in strongly right now so hard that these cars do not make any sense no more exactly how BMW CEO don't listen most people who liked the previous BMW products to change the ugly beaver grills on it's all recent models, it's a miss-opportunity for brand since people will eventually loose interest and get other competitive brands that will offer more & more exciting & cooler alternatives..

A beautiful car in my opinion, I love estates. Wish Subaru made some nice estates for the European market, but if I'll have to change my car for something new in a couple of years, I'll probably buy something from Volkswagen (hope they keep making things like this Variant R or Arteon Shooting Brake R).

Here in San Francisco bay area, I hardly see any new redesigned VW Golf nowadays. I think that's a good thing, cuz it doesn't has a handsome face any more. This wagon though, it's quite acceptable...
I know alot of people don't like the MK8 but in estate form, this has to be the best looking. And finally. The R estate predecessors we're very, very bland.
I know right. It’s ridiculous that we love SUVs and trucks so damn much. I don’t know why anyone would own a sedan or even a small SUV when a wagon has more entire room and is so much more practical!
Unlike with the last Golf R Variant (Estate as we call it in the UK) the new Mk8 Golf R Variant is actually certified and type approved for towing, which is unusual given that the VAG pretty much never puts its high performance vehicles through the towing homologation process. Which begs the question: why not?
Thanks for the review, yes I love the form factor as I have a Seat Leon ST 2022 on order. But as I don't live near a racetrack I sadly can/have to do without any "R" in the name. Looks great fun though with 4WD and drift mode, and of course a lot cheaper than a real Porsche for the budget minded performance lover. Modern UI is garbage, something most have gone wrong with the education of engineers today or more probably the marketing guys has taken the veto.
Great review as always Thomas 😉 However I continue to find all that cheap glossy plastic in Mk8 offensive. To be fair VW isnt the only culprit in festooning their interiors with the dust and fingerprint attracting surfaces 🤷🏻♂️
Ughhh I wish we got this one in the states for sure. If the car had some of those jumper seats in the hatch area like Volvos used to come equipped with, now that would be great. You don't always need to seat 7 people, but if you do on occasion it is great to have that capability.
Thanks chaps, MOST interesting as this most likely my next vehicle (from current Golf R MK 7.5 hatch...not enough room). Confirmed all for me, fine estate (known as a station wagon down under 🇦🇺😁). My only misgivings... fellow anti capacitive button person and I think the dash in its entirety, looks cheap.
Looks are always subjective, for me the critical mistake made with the Mk8 is how they’ve dumbed down the quality. That was the hallmark of having a Golf but the lower quality plastics, no gas struts and the unloved infotainment are a big miss by VW and mean the competition like the new generation Astra have caught up.

I rented a brand new Golf a couple of months ago because my Peugeot 5008 GT Premium was delayed. The car kept misidentifying speed signs. For example, I was driving on a UK 70mph dual carriageway road and the car thought it was a 110mph road, even though the UK does not have them! My passenger photographed it. It happened three times. It also identified a 30 mph road next to the 70mph road I was on and braked hard on cruise. Fortunately, my Peugeot does not make these mistakes on the same roads. The Golf was good at adjusting the speed for bends for example, apart from scary me other times. There is a bug in their adaptive cruise control that needs addressing.
@@gunterification lol it is still a dodgy bug they need to address. These things need to be addressed before being sold. Perhaps VW are too busy finding other ways to cheat about emissions to concentrate on software bugs.
Tomas, I wonder if cars in germany are available to buy without waiting, and do german dealers increase prices for cars in 20-25 % ? And is additional equipment imposed?

This infotainement is just unacceptable from VW. And they of course have the same issue within the other brands from the group. I drive a Superb IV and the last update was catastrophic! Hopefully there has been a correction a week later, but they should test it before pushing it over the air...
The front DLR design is super ugly IMO. Either make it all the way as a light bar or just keep it in the headlight space. This gives me the new Renault design vibes which I really don't like. Like this the two LED strips on the grille look like an afterthought someone slapped on there right before releasing the car.
There is no warning reflector all four door!That is really important about night drive safety…what a shame for cost cutting…By the way, new audi a3 has it all door!!!

Very beautiful car, but buying a sports car in 2021 that isn’t electric is just plain stupidity. Specially with all VWs and Audis stupid expensive optionals.
There will always be lots of people who love driving and don't want an electric toy car. If it wasn't for all the new taxes and regulations from governments/EU people would never buy electric.

No, waiting times are insane here as well. Especially for EV and PHEV, it can be over 6 months, sometimes up to a year.

In Portugal with a medium equipment it costs more or less 57/58 000 Euros, with full extras it costs surely 60 000 Euros or plus!!!

My 2010 insignia 2.0t 4x4 had haldex torque vectoring on the rear diff...

Golf 8 in general is ugly. The last beautiful golf was the mk7-7,5
