  • What plants keep insects at bay? In this video, we will show you 7 plants that repel insects and bugs.
    Mosquitoes and flies are two insects that regularly fly around our house and annoy us, and as if that wasn’t already bad enough, they can also transmit diseases. Whenever we notice them around our house, our first reaction is usually to grab some repellent to keep them away.
    But did you know that there are some plants that can also keep these insects far away from your home? And they can also keep other pests away such as aphids, cochineals and caterpillars. The best part is that they’re natural and smell much better than bug spray!
    These plants repel insects due to the essential oils present in them, which happen to be what give them their pleasant odor. In other words, having rosemary or lavender planted in your garden will significantly reduce the appearance of these unwanted insects.
    In today’s video we’re going to show you some of the best plants to keep insects and pests away from our homes and gardens.
    Basil
    Marigolds
    Catnip
    Rosemary
    Chrysanthemum
    Geranium
    Citronella

    Rosemary.
    Lavender.
    Basil (repels mosquitoes and flies) -- can use as a seasoning.
    Marigolds.
    Catnip.
    Chrysanthemum (rub leaves on skin to repel bug bites).
    Geranium - smells strongly of citrus and citronella.
    Citronalla (plants, oils, or candle forms) Can make tea with it.
    I put this here as a list for people to copy and paste to a place where they can use it. The viewer still has to come to the video to find the list.

    So a question, if i were to hang a plant 'tray' around / in front of my windows and doors - would this help in preventing those nasty little buggers to enter the house?
    and would combining these plants in the garden - in some flower pots on the table or next to the garden lounge seats, help in preventing the mosquitoes to approach?

    • @KC-ub5wx
      @KC-ub5wx 3 года назад +4

      Yes you are correct. I just read they make citronella oil from lemongrass. However I get bit by mosquitoes all the time and have bought citronellas. I rub the leaves on me and it helps a ton. This area is in the NC/SC border area, so maybe it's a subspecies where the citronella plant helps. Either way it's pleasant smelling so I recommend.

    How to keep insects from eating the plants like basil?

  • @cy4330
    @cy4330 6 лет назад +14

    BS! I have tons of herbs and all those you named and everything is organic and guess what I have about 25 types of insects around my house. Aphids love to attack my herbs especially my basils, mint, rosemary, sage, brinjal, you name it. I have leaf miner attacking my bean plants, spider net on all plants, scales on my custard apple trees, various caterpillar species, grasshopper, white fly, black fly, beetles and strange looking things. And they are hungry as hell. So nope, these plants do not chase insects away. In fact they attract insects due to the fragrance. The only way to minimize the insects is to use home made spray but then it only lasts a few days.

    • @cynthiadebeau4230
      @cynthiadebeau4230 5 лет назад +3

      Also I was fed up too so I got sticky traps and electric insect zappers. These help better than the plants. Buying ladybugs can help but only if you release them early in the season, and praying mantis but they are indiscriminate consumers and will also eat each other.lol. Anyway good luck with your garden in spite of the challenges.

      Mary Felix… the pix in this is the lemongrass plant. I live in NYS, where it can’t survive our winters. In the summer here it does fine. I grew it from a small plant I bought at a gardening place. I grew it in a large pot. By September it was 3 feet tall and beautiful. I’m sure you can find a small plant for yourself on amazon. Remember to water it regularly and keep it outdoors where there’s sunshine...that’s all I did. Good luck and enjoy.

    • @incanada83

      Joshua Rosales, no. True or false oregano does NOT repel mosquitoes.
      However, dried Oregano (the true or false), Thyme, Rosemary or Sage, will repel clothes moths (just like mothballs only safer for humans and animals).
      Lavender is overrated and short lived (dried).

      jailbirdx0x as weird as it may sound...try placing/stuffing dryer sheets around the areas where you see mice poop trails or mice themselves. (the cheap variety works very well too. I use them when overwintering cars and in the vegetable garden throughout the growing season against squirrels and chipmunks ).
