A lot of these guys get lauded over because of their athletic prowess, but all of that admiration for their GAME comes from other MEN. The reality is that women couldn't care less about the fact you can dunk, throw a touchdown, or hit a 450 ft home run.. If they did, there's plenty of dudes in their respective communities who never played a single minute of college or professional-level ball that they could otherwise get with.
What matters, in this day and age, is the money, fame, power, and influence that comes FROM those abilities, not the abilities themselves. Most of these women know absolutely fuck-all about the specific sports these guys play. It doesn't matter to them. Because of that, the expectation that they're gonna have love and affection towards you because of how skilled you are in some athletic endeavor is mind-numbingly stupid.
The fundamental truth is that we, as human beings, have two things to offer in a relationship: money (and the tangible things that come from money) and personality (and the intangible things that come from personality). For many of these athletes, being an athlete IS their personality, and 9/10 that's not enough (because, as stated above, most women simply don't care enough about the sport or sports in question). Thus, if all you have is your persona as an athlete, you aren't gonna go far. However, you supplement that with MONEY, and the tangible things that come from money, and you'll garner a hell of a lot of attention.
This isn't unique to athletes. Take any profession where the pay is good, and you'll find that for the most part, the romantic partners of people in those professions often don't give a damn and aren't particularly impressed by the fact he/she/they are in said profession. Why? Because TRUE appreciation stems from a mental and emotional understanding of something, and the more complicated and nuanced something is, the less it's going to be understood. You think most non-doctors, non-lawyers, non-programmers, and non-engineers truly understand the nuances of those fields? Of course they don't, so the main route of appreciation is the financial remuneration FROM those fields.
