I'm Samoan and I've been following you for a long time. Been here since your first samoan video and i shared it with my family and we love seeing you enjoy our food. Thanks Emmy ❤ I'd be happy to share even more recipes from my country if you want.
The rhodes dough balls have a top and a bottom side, the ones that came out cuter were right side up, the others were upside-down. There's usually some faint parallel line indentations on the side that goes down. It's also possible that it was from the plastic sticking a little bit.
Those rhodes rolls are the best my family have been using these for more years than i care to count! They are great for all kinds of recipes, you would be surprised what all you can do with them.
I've used the Rhodes dinner rolls for every holiday meal for years, I get up early and take them out while everyone is still sleeping, so when everyone finally comes to the kitchen they think I've made them completely from scratch lol never telling my secret lol love your channel! Godspeed!
I make pani popo from scratch and they are incredible! The dough also has coconut taste, and the bottom becomes caramelised in a thick layer of gooey sauce. Happy to share the recioe if anyone’s interested
Pani Popo 3/4 cup coconut milk 1 and 3/4 cup bread flour 1 and 1/2 tablespoon coconut paste 1 teaspoon dry yeast 1 tablespoon sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt For the sauce: 3/4 cup coconut milk 1/3 cup sugar You will need a 9 inch glass or ceramic dish for the oven. To make the dough, in a large bowl mix the flour and salt. Warm the coconut milk and sugar to dissolve the sugar. Cool to lukewarm then add the yeast. Wait 5 minutes then add the mix to the flour in the bowl. Also add the coconut paste, and mix until you have a smooth dough. Let rise, interrupting the rise about every 15 minutes to punch down the dough, and fold it like a book. After about an hour, roll out the dough to 1/4 of an inch thick. Roll into a tight cylinder. Slice into 1 and 1/2 inch slices and arrange them closely (cut side up) in the oven dish. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Make the sauce by heating the coconut milk with the sugar until hot. When the oven is ready, pour all the hot sauce over the dough and put into the oven. Bake 25 minutes.
Hi, Emmy! Long-time subscriber/fan. I've watched you try so many foods I've never had, it was fun to see you try something I remember fondly. In the '80's in Utah, my mom would use Rhodes loaves and rolls all the time. (She was a fantastic from-scratch cook who could whip wonders together even without a recipe, but rolls stressed her out, so the Rhodes rolls helped a ton for Thanksgiving (& etc.) For a fun activity she'd sometimes let us kids shape the dough into teddy bears or crocodiles and decorate them with nuts and raisins. I'm totally trying this coconut sticky bun recipe! Looks amazing! 😋❤

When you place the frozen rolls in the pan to rise, make sure you but the pretty side on top and the bumpy side on the bottom. This will make all of them beautiful when they are cooked. I love these rolls.
Hi Emmy! I can't tell you how much I love watching you and your channel. I love all your unique and entertaining content. I love your adventuresome attitude and how you're willing to try just about anything. I've been watching you for years and will continue to do so!❤❤❤
You are not alone. I also smell my spatulas to make sure they don’t have a savory smell. Mine are color coded, but with other people in my kitchen I can’t be sure what they got used for. I also have wood spoons and spatulas that are reserved for sweets and neutral stuff like grits and oatmeal. The rolls look delicious, can’t wait to try them!
Thank you for making pani popo emmy! I have been watching your channel since high school when I discovered your first video about samoan foods, so it’s nice to see you make this recipe !!
me too at work I battle the silicone rings on the instant pot and even put cutting boards. Apparently someone gave Mom a bowl of watermelon that tasted like garlic once. Now we have one garlic and onion board . i check to make sure nothing has smells when I am done washing it . Possibly a little over the top but I want to make sure everything turns out delicious not smelling of cumin
Oh hecka yeah, I love pani popo. And Rhodes rolls are such a great way to make them quickly and simply, I do it all the time. Fa'afetai lava Emmy for showing people this great recipe
Good timing on this one! I just bought a bunch of coconut milk and wasn't sure what to do with it yet. Now I know what I'm making with one of them at least, only I make all my breads from scratch so might try making it with coconut milk in the actual rolls themselves instead of milk or water, then topping them this way, giving it a double coconut flavor. In theory anyway! They look delicious! Happy cooking everybody.
Eyyy! Good to see you make pani popo 😊 For anyone curious. Every Walmart I’ve been to carries these in the freezer aisle. I prefer homemade though since it’s a treat.
I had a bag of Rhodes rolls in the freezer when we had a power outage for a couple days. When I was going all the food, the dough balls and glommed together, but otherwise seemed okay. I put the whole batch in a pan, let rise, then baked for pull-apart rolls.
Those rolls make awsome pizza crust. Just thaw like you did poke your fingers in it like your making focaccia bread put your pizza sauce and toppings on and bake it. Soo good my grandsons love it.
We have always used Rhodes to make our pepperoni rolls. I saw this in another channel just the other day and thought, oooh I have everything… now I need to break down and just make it!
About the spatulas ... I keep a jar of Baking Soda on my counter and I shove the freshly washed spatulas in it, leaving the handle sticking out the top. I use Dollar Tree small silicon spatulas and a wide-mouth pint Ball brand Mason jar 2/3-full of Baking Soda and wiggle the spatula side-to-side until the entire flat end is buried. It fits 5 spatulas.
There is a quick rise method where you put rolls in a pan sprayed with Pam, and cover with plastic wrap, also sprayed. Preheat oven to 200. Boil a small pot of water. Turn off oven, put rolls in with pot of water on bottom rack. They will double in size in about 30 min. Then bake as directed. This method works great!
I'm surprised you didn't know about the Rhodes dough balls! I like to make my own at home and freeze before the second rise then thaw/rise and bake as I need them. Really helps make a meal so much nicer with some fresh warm dinner rolls that I didn't have to spend a few hours making😉
Those rolls are great on their own! We've gotten them a few times. First on accident, my mom didn't realize they were uncooked dough 😂 but after i figured that out and made them, they were really good! We've used them on a few holidays when the store was out of brown and serve ones
Oh my gosh... Yes!!!! I smell my cooking utensils and pans as well. We hand wash dishes and take turns doing so. Since I am the primary cook I smell my pans as well before cooking. Sometimes after cooking something greasy, the pans will still smell. So, I know they are not fully clean even though they look like they are. If they have a smell, I will wash them again before I use them.
I used to have that coconut syrup available in my fridge all the time! Delicious. Often we spread it on toasts. Why did i forgot?? I should make it again😂
Yes to the spatulas! After using them with spiced dishes, I soak them in warm water mixed w/baking soda while I am washing up. Maybe 10 mins. Then I hand wash it with dish soap. It works to get the funk out, but I’ll still smell ‘em. 😂
I've used Rhodes for years. You can speed proof them by putting them in the oven with a pan of boiling water on the rack below. Cuts proofing time in half. I don't recommend letting them proof overnight! Did that one year for Thanksgiving and found over proofed dough. They were still good, just deformed and airier.
A long time user of Rhodes throw the whole bag in your refrigerator the day before the needed dish that way they completely defrost in your fridge in the bag and then when you pull them out the next day, put them in your baking dish to rise your dose completely thawed out and easy to work with
It’s rare I get notifications with my Samoan flag 🇼🇸 ☺️. My family wasn’t a fan when we tried to make them with Rhodes dinner rolls so we still make them from scratch. Thanks for sharing a recipe from one of my cultures 💕
We have Rhodes rolls in Texas so pretty sure they’re nationwide. I use them as a cheat to make garlic knots. They’re amazing for it. I prefer my own yeast bread dough for plain rolls (it’s richer), but if I am doctoring up the bread such as this recipe or garlic knots, Rhodes roll dough is just fine.
It’s a Christmas tradition in my family to use those to make monkey bread for Christmas morning! It’s a super easy recipe similar to cinnamon rolls that you mostly do overnight and then bake the next morning.
The Rhodes cinnamon rolls are always on my grocery list. Always have to have a bag in the freezer. They get huge! You should try those as well. It’s the same concept. They need to thaw and rise before cooking. ❤
Little tip… Rhodes rolls have a “top” and “bottom”, try to make sure you’re putting them in the pan to rise top side up, bcuz the bottoms can look shaggy like that and not rise as well as they’re meant to. I mean in the end it doesn’t really matter, unless you want them as aesthetically pleasing as their promo pics 💜 Ps… Rhodes also makes frozen dough LOAVES (you get 5 loaves for like $6 which is cheaper than premade!), they’re such an easy way to make home-baked white bread for yummy sandwiches😊
I know what you mean about spatulas taking on the smell of the last thing you cooked with it. That's why I have two sets of spatulas (actually wooden spoons). One set for savory cooking and one set specifically for baking.
When I first saw these I thought cinnamon rolls but when I really think about it they don't look that much like them. They remind me of something but I can't think of what. They do look yummy good and with the frozen rolls they can be made quickly for a fast treat for all.

Yes, yes she absolutely is
My mom would make cinnamon rolls every year for Christmas morning. She would used frozen bread dough to make them. It's a very versatile ingredient.
When my daughter still lived at home, I used these rolls to make mini calzones❤

Oh, I'll be adding this to my to do list. And nice because I cook for one. Can portion out and make small fresh batches. Yum!
Ooh, that's smart. I was thinking while I was watching that there's no way I could make these because I'd eat way too many lol
Love the quicker way. However, making from scratch and rolling them brings back all the yummy memories.
Talofa lava ❤
I can imagine adding pandan leaves in the coconut syrup..❤
...or ube flavoring. Like a quick ensaymada!
Oh yeah, that'd be great

It came out fluffy, the coconut sauce makes it glazy. Thank you for sharing
If your spatula is silicone, you can boil it or bake it and it'll get rid of any smells.

When ever I use coconut milk is the Aroy D that’s what the pro chef’s use and it now comes in a carton!!👍🤩
Yes! I like Aroy D or Chaokoh best, but I ran out and Thai Kitchen was all the grocery store had.
Thank you for making pani popo emmy! I have been watching your channel since high school when I discovered your first video about samoan foods, so it’s nice to see you make this recipe !!
4:22 not only do I smell my spatulas, but I have separate cutting boards just for onions
Me too😊
We use those frozen dough balls for all kinds of stuff. They’re really good!
Rhode's also makes some excellent frozen cinnamon rolls. So handy for xmas morning.
Rhodes dinner rolls and loaves of bread are very good and a real time saver. I've been using them for years.
I always check my spatulas, too. Silicon really holds onto smells and tastes!

Wow, those rolls look delicious! Emmy, thanks for sharing easy recipes.
I need to make these.
I might sprinkle the top with toasted coconut when it comes out of the oven. 😋
On the west coast, we have 'bridgford' frozen doughs.
A staple of our holiday meals since I'm yay high.

I made these with blended fresh strawberries in it. Soooooo good!

Oh gosh yes! Or you get lost in meal prep and forget you had it thawing on the kitchen table and you have an overstuffed dough pillow in the morning.
Emmy - I have a specific spatula I use for baking & another for savory…lesson learned a long time ago 😂
We love these rolls!
Amazing recipe coming from those balls! of dough 😋 beautiful buns 😋 of goodness! 😊
