Yeah! I was thinking about the kanji separately so 髭 (ひげ) and 男 (おとこ) so I thought it was going to be ひげお as like bearded man. I don't know why I thought to drop the とこ at the end. On-yomi is a reading method that cannot be understood by itself and is used as an idiom in combination with other kanji. The kun-yomi of "男" is (otoko=man), and the on-yomi is (dan). There are many ways to read Kanji, not just one. I'm sorry for the poor explanation. I used Google Translate.
