    I do have Vienna Solo Strings which are amazing. I'm an oboist so I'm maybe more familiar with articulations than most non orchestral musicians. Hundreds of articulations are a bit daunting but with time and patience I've produced some excellent musical sounds such as Benjamin Britton Fantasy for Oboe Violin Viola and Cello, the reason I desired to own Vienna Solo Strings. All the other "lush" sounding libraries are great in their own unique ways depending on the sound that works the best for your particular orchestration sound and arrangement. Are we all familiar to the different sound of a chamber orchestra vs a symphony orchestra vs an orchestra that needs more strings like a sparse community orchestra, or a classical symphony blending many extra string desks with 200 voices for Beethoven 9th?

    Really like the expressiveness of those Swarm instruments. I really wish you could combine the tonality of the sampled libraries and the swarm instruments expressiveness. The swarm instruments doesn't sound as close to the real thing as sampled libraries, but the controlability makes up for this. If you can use it well they sound so close to how a real musician would play the instrument. They are also very expensive, and imho physical modelling still have a way to go to sound exactly like a real instrument. But the expressiveness ... amazing.

    • @russellcameronthomas2116
      @russellcameronthomas2116 Год назад +1

      I use SWAM instruments by Audio Modeling. In my experience, they *require* automation of the performance parameters to sound real and expressive -- bow pressure, speed (expression), bow position, vibrato depth and speed, and various parameters that control attack. Also tasteful compression and reverb can make a huge difference unless you have the ear of an audio engineer. Also -- most people don't explore all the instrument models under each instrument, which have noticeable timbre and dynamic differences. You also need to think like a violinist (or trumpet player, etc.). All together, I'm a big fan.

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 Год назад

      @@russellcameronthomas2116 Exactly, and at least for the wind and horn instruments you can get a pro breath controller today. I have only tried an old Yamaha bc-1 years ago and it was basically just the same as aftertouch when it was introduced in the DX-7. I havn't seen a "bow controller" 😄unless you can get one of those Yamaha Silent instruments with build-in midi 🙂

    • @russellcameronthomas2116
      @russellcameronthomas2116 Год назад

      @@mrdali67 I don't even try to control all these parameters in real time. Or at least not yet. I have some cool multi-controllers, and would like to get a Linnstrument for that purpose, but for now it is sufficient for me to automate the performance parameters in my DAW after recording the MIDI notes. Some people hate working this way, but I am very comfortable with it, and I am getting faster. I realize that most people want "free + fancy lunch": very realistic and expressive solo instruments + simple keyboard playing w/ few or no additional controllers. I don't believe that is possible for real-time instruments. (Might be possible with 2-pass batch processing with AI software. I might even write software for that purpose.)

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 Год назад +1

      @@russellcameronthomas2116 Ya, I know you really have to have some leet skills if you have to control either multiple articulations with key switching or all the possibilities you have with those swarm instruments. Some of the libraries DOM showcased here do have some pretty good coding for figuring out from how you play which articulations to use. I have always been pretty impressed with how fairly easy it is to get the Yamaha SA sounds found in the Tyros/Genos/Montage/ModX line by just "playing" and it automaticly selects artulations and only 2 buttons to control special art dependent on the sounds without taking up imense memory space. Gets a little harder with these Libraries that have tons of different articulations. Pretty close to impossible to do that live without a backing where you have the key switches and cc changes prerecorded if you want it to be perfect.

    Hey, great video! You really are an amazing pianist who has such an infectious passion for music!
    I was wondering if you might be able to point me to a synth that does something a bit unique, and ideally, a video of you demonstrating it? I'm looking for a good single-string [or something that can be isolated to a single string] VSTi with bowing control to make a sorta virtual tagelharpa having each string on a different track. Bowing control doesn't need to be fully one-to-one gesture-based, but the ability to control starting and stopping of bowing independent from the note selection is absolutely paramount to achieving the right sound!
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

      You can try it for a month with UVI’s subscription plan… Unfortunately I wasn’t happy in the end although it has some interesting stuff (adjustable tremolo speed by stretching the samples, forced per string samples for all string instruments, and many articulations that can’t be found in other libraries). For expressive solo parts it’s quite limited for me (dynamics, round robins, different kinds of attacks). Better than the solo instruments in the free Alpine project orchestra, but not a deep sampled library for sure.
      If your budget is tight you could also try Musio for 10 bucks per month which includes Cinesamples solo strings, Tina Guo and Taylor Davis violin which are covered in Dom’s review.

    How does it sounds when the string instrument plays a double stop? I orchestrate, but the biggest problem is playing a chord. If you have multiple violins and they play divissi, the chord will sound all the notes as one. But a violin does not play all the notes of the cord at the same time. The bow have to go across the finger board to play al the notes. It's supose to sound like a broken chord, but I would need to rewrite the music so it sounds like it's supposed to. I've written a couple of pieces for violin, but the playback does not know the nuances of playing more than two notes at the same time.

    I would be curious how good you think the Native Instruments Libraries are (Stradivari Violin, Stradivari Cello, Guarneri Violin, Amati Viola)

    I have used Joshua Bell from day one. Unfortunately tech wise it is very buggy and unstable. But worth the fight every time.

    Thanks!! I'm wondering if any of the libraries are reverb free, or it that's baked in due to recording in a hall. Anybody know?

    Please try to use a breath controller. Sensible one, best experience for solar strings I have with hornberg….. It’s expensive a little bit more difficult to program, but the most sensible. The TEC BITE and breath controller is suitable, not like the Hornberg, but less than half the price. Sorry for my English only want to give you my experience. I do a lot of composing and arrangements for TV… TKKG, Tatort, Bonnie Tyler, Kool & The Gang,…. Commercials …Bla bla bla If you want to reach a natural performance, you have minimum 4 controllers to control again sorry for my English. Volume cntrl 7, expression 11, attack release, mic distance (means instrument distance from mic……… this has to be programmed and rehearsed. Make your setup, best not to change controllers even by use of different libraries, feet, left hand and breathcontroller ….. I hope you understand and again sorry for my English

    I haven't tried many of these. I've been using LA Scoring Strings for many years. But recently, I'm going for SWAM for solo strings because its just so easy to set up and use live. Sample libraries seem so clunky in comparison. I don't think its the best sounding strings, but it is good, very expressive possibilities and any deficiencies in pure sound quality are lost within the context of a mix.

    Great video as always!
    Off topic question: Is there a way to see the actual chords when using the NI Komplete Kontrol chord feature?
    I would like to see the chords and not just the key that I press when recording it in Cubase.
    Same with the arpeggio feature
