Defending against the roasts by referencing a better and more cozy livingroom we never get to see, is the booktube equivalent of driving a rusted and broken down volkswagen with a sticker claiming your other car is a ferrari 🤣
@@nihilasta2661 actually, not so much. People won't date anyone related within 3 or 4 generations and "outlaws" (the relatives of in-laws) are excluded too. Usually, if both halves of a couple live in the district one recently moved in from out of state.
Best common criticism I'm seeing here is that this isn't really a shelf of books that actually get read, but rather a big curated prop. Its like Gatsby's bookshelf. Are the pages on all these "books" even cut? Are you sure?
I too find the shelves too unbroken horizontally. Because the shelves are a single straight line with nothing vertical you need some sort of knackery to break it up and allow the eyes to focus. Nothing too heavy, but a nice extra large funko between some of the sets would make a huge difference. I also don't really like the typewriters. In theory they are good, but I think the spacing is weird and they look like they are just sat there rather than being a display piece.
And in a weird order too, the black and brown would look so much better at the ends of the typewriter line. in a by hight, would look better. And why is the tacky pink malazan in the middle, and why not at the left like all the other collections. the grounded colours is fine , but the pink cover world first fit way more with the grand collections left, and lets the grounded covers less use their grounded colours charme. Ok ant its in the higher 2, too clean, a few funkopops and at least detective picachu funkopop would set a good finish at the higher board. Also the right book covers in the middle, were they trhe right finisher, way better ok the tacky is fine, it just soesnt belong in the middle but to the left boarder. It would look way better over wheel of time. And kayla , does he feat kaylas could notice your precious wheel of time?! put her above it :P also all strong reddish book left xcould look eary :O
That's what it was, I couldn't put my finger on it, but that's it. The unbroken line all the way across the wall. It feels a little weird compared to individual bookshelves sitting next to each other, bc with individual bookshelves, you get the vertical breaks
I had a science teacher in high school who would sometimes rant about the “tyranny of the horizontal” in modern architecture. Your shelves are looking mighty tyrannical.
I like the professional look of the shelf - you're a professional. The restraint on decorations make for a clean look, not distracting from the presenter. Now for the private shelf, please.
honestly i like the bookshelf you had before the move, it fit you so well and now it just seems sterile and bland. i also hate how the malazan books are different sizes.
That moment with the glass of water in the middle of the video. I’m terrified of spilling a glass of water in my living spaces and Daniel just does it for a joke. More evidence that his mind is just unknowable to me lol
Gonna be honest and it might sound brutal. The threeshelves, to me, they scream soulless. It gives the same vibe as fairy lights just for booktubers. It looks good but it tells us nothing about you. As many have pointed out the lack of knick-knacks. I can see 2 things in the background that tells me a little about why you are different. 1) The custom Wheel of Time 2) The type writers. The rest honestly feel soulless and like if you were any other youtuber. I am not saying what you've made looks bad and that is VERY important to keep in mind. and if you like how this looks - DON'T FUCKING CHANGE A THING. But to me it doesn't scream you it screams generic booktuber number 68.
It's 12am and I literally started re-arranging my bookshelves after this roast, it got me in the mood! But it'll have to wait till the morning because snoozeeeeee
Daniel’s books looks so nice and clean, he’s probably been secretly reading from an eReader since his first video, then bought all the books to fool us.
I really really hope now that one day someone will give Brandon Sanderson an even better version, I feel like that would match the energy of evil extremely well.
They are very pretty! My main aesthetic critique is that the visual weight of the Beserks would be more balanced if they were more towards the right side of the shelf rather than above the custom WoT omnibus. But I do appreciate that others in your 'cord had pointed out that the absence of 'well-loved' books makes it lack a certain...soul. You know how some ebay sellers will sell books 'by the yard' or by color, for set designers and home stagers? It kinda looks like one of those 😅Like the shelf of someone who doesn't actually read. But hey! It's a camera backdrop, so that's valid. Maybe you can post a picture of your 'schlubby' shelves later and redeem yourself of the accusation of hiding them out of shame ;) Always enjoy a good bookshelf roast!
The thing about non fiction books, especially say science nonfiction books which lend themselves to non narrative structures, is that they are not as daunting as people make out. They are in fact the opposite because they are perfect dip in and out of books, unlike novels which require an investment into following through on plot spanning journey. Its like the difference between visiting a lake for a swim (nonfiction) or kayaking down a river midflood (fiction) - not always but it often felt that way. TLDR when brain tired, non fiction good, needs less investment.
Glad to see me comments about Boromir being a 10/10 and the Goblin FunkoPop were included😌. But, even though they have a generic goblin, we need a Disheveled Goblin FunkoPop, it is the next step for this community XD.
As for non-fiction - check out Mary Roach. I describe all of her books as "your funniest dry-humor friend telling you about their latest wiki deep dive, just they actually went and visited/interviewed people directly too"
Daniel: Calls Ian C. Esselmont books “bonuses”, rather than acknowledging they are COMPLETELY PART OF THE STORY TO THE POINT OF BEING SET IN THE SAME TIME AS THE MAIN TEN Also Daniel: has so many editions of LOTR he has them in at least one language he probably can’t even speak, or at least well. And it’s the same story.
Worst than that they created the entire world and characters together and Erikson acknowledges none of it could or would exist without Esslemont. Esslemont's books are as valid and part of the "original" series as anything Erikson has done. He's treating it like it's Erikson's series and Esslemont has written in Erikson's world. If Esslemont is bonuses then to me that means the Sanderson Wheel of Time books are even more so as he just used Robert Jordan's work to write the books he wrote for that series. (Note: I don't think Sanderson's are bonuses as I don't think Esslemont's are just saying if they are then so must Sanderson's).
for what it's worth, i like em! the type writers give your space more character and some retro flair. and don't worry, i have an entire steam deck blocking a whole shelf on the Billy i just got. have more games than books, but i live in a small space, so forgive the cardinal sin lol
If you’re just getting into nonfiction books, I’d love to recommend some history ones: King Leopold’s Ghost by Adam Hochschild which is about King Leopold II and his horrific plunder of the Congo during the 19th century. In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson which is about the American ambassador (and his family) in Germany during the rise of the Nazis. The Black Count by Tom Reiss is about the life of Alexandre Dumas’s (yes, THAT Alexandre Dumas) very famous father.
I remember people in the comments of your kindle review recommending Kobo e-readers (myself included). Glad to hear you seem to be using it now? Are we getting a video about it?
My shelf is a series of books piled high from the floor to my waist. It's like being surrounded by little mountains and skyscrapers of thoughts and souls.
And to be fair, finding those hardbacks is hard AF. I hunted them down to give them to my boyfriend a few years ago and boi was that a lot more complicated than anticipated. Still haven't been able to find the first 3 in the same format as the rest, it drives me insane (should have bought the paperbacks and rebind them myself lol)
Too funny! I have a big shelf redo planned for this weekend. Too many books, not enough shelves or space for more bookcases. I’m hoping I can execute my master plan… Not sure I have the confidence to offer the result up for a roast. 😬😅
Valazan: a crossover/mash-up of Valdemar & Malazan. I'd read it. Malazan from a child's perspective, or Valdemar from a grimdark antihero's perspective.
This is more of a curated backdrop than your bookshelves proper, a bookshelf tour would be cool, including a run-down of your digital library. I feel like there would have been just enough space for an extra shelf if you had dropped them down a bit, maybe you were worried about it looking too cramped, maybe the top shelf would have turned out too high, but it has gone far enough in the other direction people are demanding more knackage. I think though, there could have been more books, one of the key things that I think makes bookshelves look cosy and interesting, is their packed in nature, maintaining a look of balance while working with the reality that books aren't all exactly the same size. Minimalism with books is a thing too, that's more about having a few, presumably well-loved books you like to keep around. But this isn't that, and you are fighting between your urges for it to look cool, sleek even, and to fit in your dragon hoard of books, because they are all precious. I have formed a parasocial relationship with Valazan now, it's a nice little story to remember, I vote for keeping it.
Glad the shelf brackets are no longer down. Still frustrated that I can see the brackets (was this an artistic choice? Hidden floating brackets ARE a thing). Because you're centre on shelves, book height choice in sections does cause visual illusion of shelf bending. Used minimal length level to prove long shelf isn't level, what fallacy is this! I like your books, can't argue. Def hide that cable. Would prefer fourth shelf with more spread out books and different homes for the type writers.
I recognize the Wheel of Time mega book from Nerdforge's channel!! That's so cool that you have it! How did that happen? Also what were you smoking at 5:00 😏

I personally prefer having a shelf with a lil preview of TBR so I can drool all over them and make the pages run so I have to get more books

In my defense I am not native English speaker,
