Star Wars: Heir to the Empire - The Original Sequel Trilogy (Legends Lore)

  • Before Disney bought Star Wars and Lucasfilm and started their own Sequel Trilogy, fans already thought of The Thrawn Trilogy as the Original Star Wars Sequels. Written by Timothy Zahn, these books were considered essential pieces of the Expanded Universe, now called Legends. They also introduced many characters and ideas that would become integral parts of Star Wars Lore, including Grand Admiral Thrawn, Mara Jade Skywalker, Coruscant, and many others. This is the story of the first book in the trilogy... Heir to the Empire.

    I think the thing that made Thrawn so compelling is that he strays from the typical, mystical villain of the star wars stories. He is Moriatry with no Sherlock, so everyone has to pull all then know together to defeat him. It makes him far more of a threat than someone who has power that you know the hero will eventually be able to attain and counter.

    • @Cyro_2235
      @Cyro_2235 3 года назад +11

      he is not written smart, he is written all-knowing. thats why i think he is TOTALLY overrated! saying "Species X cannot counter Manuever Y" does not make a character smart, it's just writing lore the way it makes him LOOK smart. what smart tactics did he exactly use, thats not just lore thats written to his advantage? how can Thrawn guess that someones voice is not actually theirs, but a droid with modulated voice?? with NO hints at all?? never ever did someone assume a voice is actually just a droid, only this one time when it's right!

    • @kristjanpeil
      @kristjanpeil 3 года назад +2

      I haven't read the post-Crucible comics, but from bits and pieces I gather that Thrawn is what galactic society eventually evolves into: a non-force-sensitive meritocracy. Subtle hints are littered throughout Legends, like Daala's push for control over the order, the failure of High Republic pacifism (haven't read yet!), going so far back, as the anti-Force shadow group in SwtOR's imperial agent story, and even the impending everyone-vs-jedi war hinted at at the end of Dawn of the Jedi.
      The consumer-friendly level of depth characteristic to most Star Wars content leaves little doubt that this is a paraphrase for democracy over aristocracy. Always turns my stomach when someone in real life goes "unite behind me".

      Seriously, most star wars villains end up ripping off Vader or Palpatine. I mean Malak, Kylo Ren, Grand Inquisitor are all clear do-overs of the fallen jedi story. Snoke, Tenebrae, all those Clone Palpatine stuff.

    • @nocrtname
      @nocrtname 2 года назад +21

      The best thing about Thrawn is that he was not force sensitive. He was the mastermind, but he wasn’t all powerful.

    • @WilliamAGould
      @WilliamAGould Год назад +8

      @@nocrtname What makes Thrawn so dangerous is that he looks for counters to his threats. He found a counter to protect himself and his troops from the force.
      Interestingly enough, it was not made clear if Thrawn knew about this counter before the books, or learned of it.
      He might have known for years, but did not act on it for concern that if Palpatine or Vader learned he had such resources, they would have destroyed him.

      Thrawn is a classic character and while the 1st Trilogy is masterful Zahn's further development of Thrawn's character and history reflects a more mature and complex telling. It too bad Disney's having declared the first trilogy "legends." Had that not been done, there might have been a bridge between the earlier work and the latter 2 trilogies because they deserve to be acknowledged and taken into account. The more recent trilogies represent the author's intent just as much as the 1st and the disconnect between Rebels Thrawn and these newer novels just seems to show they mean them to now be "legends." I have found myself trying to make sense of the Thrawn of Rebels and the Thrawn of Zahn's more recent Trilogies. What would account for the "good twin"/ "evil twin" effect. "Good twin" must be from another dimension! It isn't a POV difference. "Evil twin" Thrawn is not as intelligent as "good twin," nor as complex. The later novel, THRAWN, is the result of a more seasoned author. I wish there was not the break in continuity of character between REBELS and the novels, ALLIANCE and TREASON, that might have helped. Nonetheless, brilliant 1st trilogy, and if you have not read it, you are missing out. The recent 2 trilogies are very good but are more grounded and personal, more spy thriller with battles, intrigue, and strategy. More grit and less mythos.

    As to the characters this book introduced, I'd argue Mara Jade was far more important than Thrawn. She was vital to 40+ more novels. It's just that Disney's horrible Sequels threw Luke Skywalker under the bus so had no need for a character so important to his future journey.
    I was thrilled to see Thrawn teased in Rebels, I would have lost my mind if Mara Jade was with Luke on Ahch-To.

      And fair point! I think I kind of consider Thrawn the bigger impact from this book simply because he is used in so much marketing. Which probably just comes from his super iconic look. Your video was awesome sir! You didn't need to ask for a like or a subscription. I was fully intending on doing it. These books, the lore and the history that Timothy Zahn created as I said below, got me so into the expanded universe. These books became my "films", and I have read them all, and re-read them all multiple times. I've needed to go to Barnes & Noble and reacquire many of my paperbacks due to them being read so many times...lol. Especially this series and all of the Timothy Zahn books. I'm well over 300+ books from this Franchise. The Original creator's vision of just Star Wars, then The Empire Strikes Back, to Return of the Jedi. Then any and all of the ones before, during, and after the Prequels. However, of all of the books, comics, and stories, the Timothy Zahn books are the, in my opinion the best of them all. His take on the Star Wars universe was spot on perfect. The creation of Grand Admiral Thrawn was the most creative, unique, innovative, brutal, yet extremely elegant and accurate with his tactics. He had no issues with sacrificing some ships and men just to get a glimpse of the Commander's tactics, and then knowing who he was and where he came from he was able to deduce exactly how to destroy him. This type of attack was one that was never seen before in any of the Star Wars movies and it honestly was a powerful and brutal way of fighting. I apologize for babbling on, but I truly LOVE the Star Wars Universe, especially the universe before Disney. My opinion is that ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES Disney MADE was to ERASE AND DELETE the Expanded Universe and ERASE EVERY PIECE OF DATA, EVERY BOOK, EVERY GRAPHIC NOVEL, AND EVERY SINGLE CREATION FROM THE STAR WARS FRANCHISE!! That not only angered me and quite a few of the fans, but they erased so many incredibly well written stories! Stories that they could have utilized, but Disney DIDN'T WANT TO PAY ANYONE ROYALTIES!!?!! WTH?!?!? Thankfully Dave Filoni, George Lucas' Heir to the Empire was still there. And THANKFULLY he was able to get them to ease up on their arrogance. OR Disney saw that Kathleen Kennedy's "vision" was pathetically inept, idiotic, and it completely tried to destroy everything that George Lucas created! Look at the FIRST LINE in the Disney trilogy. The Farce Awakens, "This will begin to make things RIGHT!" Who ever said it was wrong to begin with? It wasn't bad until Kathleen Kennedy took over and implemented her Farce is Female agenda. It wasn't just that. There have been MANY MANY DIFFERENT AMAZING FEMALE Characters in Star Wars. From Princess Leia, her "Mom" Queen Amidala, Senator Mon Mothma, Mara Jade, and many of the Jedi in the Prequels were women. Shaak-Ti, Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, and again many others I can't remember, but my point is George Lucas NEVER EVER thought Star Wars was a Boy's Club. And again one of the STRONGEST characters he created was Princess👸Leia Organa. George Lucas should have NEVER sold Star Wars to Disney! They have literally destroyed everything that George Lucas created. And that is the biggest problem with Disney. Their ARROGANCE. For Kathleen Kennedy to think that she knew better than the Man who CREATED this Universe? For the Disney executives to think that THEY could make better movies than the man who again CREATED THIS VAST AND EXPANSIVE UNIVERSE? Well? Toys and games are at an ALL-TIME LOW! There are more Action Figures in landfills than there are in kids houses. Disney ➕ is, well it stinks. If it wasn't for the series and shows that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau created, I wouldn't careless about Disney ➕! They took one of the most expansive, incredible, beautifully designed and populated franchises and they said ERASE IT!! WE CAN DO BETTER!! Hang on, 😄😁😆😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭🤣😅🤣🙂🤣😅😂😅😂😆🤣😅😂😅🤣😂😅🤣😆😂😅😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂 Sorry I was laughing about that last part. I have kept my classic📚📚books📚📚, and as I said I still read them, I still cherish them and I still consider them CANON! NO matter what Disney says. Those 📚books📚 have better stories, better characters, and better locations than ANYTHING they've created, with the exception of what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have done!

    Thrawn went from this truly menacing strategist that was seemingly unstoppable, and never left his chair. That is what made him so scary, his only weapon was his mind, and three star destroyers, and almost destroyed the Republic, something the Empire failed to do at it's height.
    Then disney took over and made him into some generic cartoon supervillan with the gravitas of a sunday morning cartoon (because he literally became one)

    Palpatine had access too all that cloning technology and for some reason didn't try cloning padme too further control anakin.
    What I'm trying too say is yes she is dead, but here is a chance too bring life back into the shell either by creating new memories or as a way of leverage over vader's head.
    Idk but if he thought his wife was still Alive, vader would be the most feared if not even more so across the galaxy.
    He probably would've upgraded his suit and would have unlocked more abilities along the road.

    Zahn didn't create Coruscant, he just named it. The city-planet capital of the Empire was in early drafts of RotJ and was detailed in the WEG D6 Star Wars RPGs that Zahn was using as reference material where it was named 'Imperial Planet' with the implication that it obviously wasn't named that before the Empire took over.

    Always did love this trilogy, will you be covering the other two books as well? Also for more Star Wars lore i think looking into Jaina and Jacen Solo would be great! Particularly Jacen because his history as a character is so interesting and is probably the inspiration for Kylo Ren’s path as a Sith Lord in a way

    • @jonathanryan9946
      @jonathanryan9946 4 года назад +14

      I'd argue Kylo Ren has far more in common with Kyp Durron than Jacen Solo. All he really shares with Jacen is his heritage and having a force bond (but used in the opposite way). Kyp and Kylo nearly had identical looks (the only difference was eye color), personalities, obsession with Vaders helmet, unique lightsaber, blowing up a star system, and having the hots for the Rey/Jaina Solo character whom he was a decade older than.
