The thing about Thrawn is that he's the first (and in my opinion best) time someone said "What if this Star Wars villain isn't a Sith or grotesquely evil? What if their only powers are being very smart and charismatic?"

The Thrawn ascendency trilogy by Timothy Zahn are a must read. I read them before the trilogy where he enters the Stars Wars universe. The Ascendency books are important because they start when he was Just entering the Chiss military on his home world and they follow him through the ranks and through amazing battles (again, before he enters the Star Wars universe). I highly recommend reading the Thrawn Ascendency books first to learn all about his background then move on to the books where he enters the Star Wars universe.Note: small spoiler, he does accidentally come into contact with a young Anikan in book one of the Ascendency series!!
I have to say that I love the Thrawn novels new and original. I have the Heir to the Empire trilogy, both of The hand of Thrawn, all of the Chist ascendancy and the 3 newer Thrawn novels in audiobook. I have been a big Thrawn fan for a long time and I was so happy to see him in the Rebels animated series. I can't wait to see how he is in the Ashoka series. It makes me wonder how things would have gone if he was alive during the Yuzong Vong battles. With his mind he would have been a lot of help against the Yuzong Vong.
I understand how we need for Thrawn to be the big baddie in this story, but, I was kind of hoping that we were going to experience Thrawn also facing another adversary... in the form of a competitor. I believe that would also allow for this show to be a completely separate and more complex story than just simply trying to create a path towards the Sequel Trilogy or rewrite the Zahn Trilogy.
