My understanding is that the big point of Pursism machines are the hardware killswitches on the communication subsystems, not just the FOSS aspects.

The modular approach, as you suggest, would be a computing revolution.
I think the problem is that it is based on a faulty assumption, which is that most people are capable of being "modular" with anything in their life. It's not really true. This was tried with cell phones and it ended up being a failure. It's a dirty secret, at least if you come at things from a rationalist/libertarian perspective, but in order to survive most people need things served to them in a prepackaged way, maybe with some occasional choice but ultimately according to an organizational principle that they are being handed from someone else. They are not self-directed with even basic things, never mind how to build/manage their own computers.
This means that modular computing, while it may have some adopters, is always going to be a very small niche market, and by definition then will never have the institutional effect desire

Put Android-x86 on a Pentium computer and a Core computer, they will perform the same. Processors are becoming stronger not because they need to, but because software is becoming bloated. So from that angle, they are overrated
@@mariozenarju6461 On the literal topic of the video and talking about "free internet roaming" or what have you, if you were to want to run QubesOS on a machine with multiple VMs supporting multiple operating systems at the same time in order to keep your tasks securely separate, an outdated CPU is not going to put out desired clock speeds to keep up with a lot of the demands required for such a task. Modern CPUs aren't just used for gaming they have many applications as software becomes more complex or "bloated" the demands for better CPUs arise. By your own admission it is the developers of bloated software who hold the blame not the CPUs.

@Apl Nk Dunno boss at small company where I have apprenticeship now has a laptop that has a trackpoint and that laptop is definetely not a ThinkPad.
Your second point about 3-D printable components is excellent. I had never considered that aspect of longevity.
What struck me as one of the best features on the Purism devices is the hardware killswitch for webcam & microphone.
I think I might be able to cram a switch where that silly Think-Vantage-button is now on my X220, without messing up the plastic panel too much?

Yeah just like the wifi switch would be perfect. Options:
- rewire the wifi switch
- install additional switch ...
- somewhere in existing slot (keyboard, Kensington lock) that hopefully fits
- drill/dremel a hole in the case (or top panel above keyboard)
- in the Express-card slot (make a mount with Sugru / hotglue / 3D-printing)
You might also buy them because of other small features that add up, like kill switches.
There is one thing that Core 2 Duo processors are lacking which is really quite useful today. I am talking about AES-NI, which is really handy when you are using full disk encryption. I am not sure how big the performance hit really is though.

Yes I've seen it. Part of me is skeptical that this is a surefire disabling of the whole system, but if it is, you could reasonably say Purism computers *are* "free" in that while they do have some malicious proprietary components, they're totally severed from accessing anything else. I'm sure someone would disagree.
But as to Purism's claim that the *whole* of the ME has been totally neutered, I'd like to see it reviewed by other professionals. Granted, whether this is legit or not, Purism and a lot of other teams are extremely close to getting rid of the ME from what I hear, so the whole discussion might be moot in a couple months.

I'm 99% certain that Purism is (simply) using coreboot, reflashing with an me_cleaner cleaned ME, and setting the HAP bit (as per blog.ptsecurity.com/2017/08/disabling-intel-me.html ) on the ME (this is probably what lies behind their claim of 'neutering the ME'). All of which one can do oneself, and which I've done successfully & happily on an X230.
Sceptical or unreasonable? Available data shows the ME is now fully disabled via HAP. Could something come back? Could santa claus be real? Might we all spontaneously combust? Sure, all of those things are equally possible.

4:44 - I do 3D graphics design at work (on Linux with Blender) and music and video production at home (also on Linux) and modern CPUs are great. I have a Ryzen 7 1700 at home and I would never say that a Pentium 3 would suffice for my work. Maybe you're not doing stuff that consumes a lot of CPU time? Making music with a lot of synthesizers and effects, doing video production ,rendering 3D graphics - it's all very CPU-hungry. If you're mostly working on text documents and use terminal apps - older CPUs will do just fine, terminal programs are super efficient with CPU usage. But for multimedia production a modern CPU (and GPU) is a godsend.
i definitely agree with the push for open hardware and super easy repair/upgrade, HOWEVER purism at bare minimum doesn't shit on the user in hardware design, having a tool replaceable battery in laptops and the upcoming librem 5 is a million times better than the glued in shit other companies pull off...

Love the 3D printing of parts idea… I would also love to see more diversity in terms of actual architecture: PowerPC, MIPS, RISC-V, ARM, … with an architecture neutral open firmware as boot loader, initalisation, and basic I/O
One criticism I have of your opinion on Purism is the fact that not even a librebooted X200 is completely free hardware. There is firmware everywhere on the X200 that is non-free. The EC firmware and your hard drive firmware are very easy examples. Your "free" WiFi card has firmware running on it. The only difference is that the firmware is on the card and not the OS so free software people don't consider it non-free. There is also the x86 microcode which we have no clue what it does really. The best chance we have at a truly free hardware solution is RISC-V, in my opinion. Even then, are we going to make "free" hard drives? In my opinion, Purism should be praised more for their attempt at being a mainstream manufacturer of mostly free computers. They are doing way better than Lenovo or Dell at this.

The theory behind the Intel Management Engine is for business machines that need to be accessed remotely, since it allows AMT to work. It is a feature that needs to exist on business machines, but it should be able to be turned off imo.
100% agree with you; purism is doing kind of a half measure on most their stuff. If i want a nice laptop built for linux ill go with system76. If i want a 100% free computer ill get EOMA, TERES, minifree, etc. But i think their linux phone is very intesresting and the only project of the kind right now so worth checking out.
The issue with system76 is that it doesn't work with 100% free drivers out of the box. I have a system76 laptop and it comes with an intel wifi card that isn't supported without proprietary drivers.
I would love to see more ARM or MIPS (maybe RISC-V) based laptops. PiTop has an 8 hour battery, 1080p screen, and use the mostly binary blob free Broadcom raspi hardware. Not super fast, but good enough for IRC and programming etc. Maybe some Chinese cartoons.

Great video. Absolutely share your opinion. Just for the sake of correctness: Intel introduced the management engine/AMT in the range of consumer products ( laptops/desktops ) in late 2006. Even Thinkpad T60 and upwards ship with that stuff. (I own several TPs)

Is there any modern laptop that follows the thinkpad philosophy ?
I mean in the sense of them being very easily reparable, parts being easily replaceable and laptops being upgradable.
Of course without need to have the mptherboard exposed in order to acces hard drive or whatever.
I ask because it is going to be more and more difficult to get parts to fix them as tome goes on. Even if you are very careful with your thinkpa, eventually we are going to run out of old second or third hand thinkpads to use.

Regarding repairability, there is a tradeoff there just like with phones. Purism aims to make "premium-feeling" products, that are reasonably thin and solid-looking. This does mean that it's harder to repair them, because they have to cram components together, but this also means that normies are more likely to buy them. I also prefer highly repairable devices, even if it means they look a bit ugly, but I understand this is not for everyone. If I wanted a good libre laptop with Librem features, I'd buy a Thinkpad or some more obscure machine like System76, preferably with a hardware TPM, and do some drilling and soldering work myself to install kill switches and maybe an external Wi-Fi antenna. It will look very DIY, but I don't care. Other people do, though.
You should look into Dragonbox Pyra and Olimex Teres-I. They have the traits you talk about.
For the sake of argument, have you done any heavy video or audio editing on modern processors? I don't play games either, but my x201 with an i7 is FAR superior to my x60 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. At least for circumstances that require a lot of processing power.
To be fair, I don't need that much power every day. The x60 is librebooted but the x20t1 is only corebooted. That is the main reason I haven't fully transitioned to the x201t. My t400 is unfortunately collecting dust. But once the x201t is able to be librebooted, I see no reason to not make it my main laptop. Any reason I shouldn't?
Yeah I have. To me, there's a much bigger gap between the performance of an Intel Core 1 Duo and Core 2 Duo than between the 2 and modern processors. I've never measured the difference, but if the i5/i7 are faster, it's just not significant enough for me to notice. It's totally possible that your experience is different.
I really just think the processor angst common in some circles is hugely overblown. Keep in mind, I'm (1) a RUclipsr who has to compile and render some of my videos and (2) a Linux autiste who does a little program compiling everyday. Even then, having a modern processor isn't a priority for me. For people who aren't (1) or (2) (i.e. 90% of normal people), processors are just an expensive placebo.
Interesting. I will admit that I am guilty of falling into the "higher number, more power" trap. I will do some benchmarks and get concrete results.
But when doing multi-track recording, the i7 provides less latency and seems to handle more tracks with many effects at once. That doesn't necessarily mean that the processor is the hero though. I am also generalizing and haven't done strict testing with identical projects on different machines. These are just my probably biased observations.
You have far more experience than I do, especially with video. I apologize if I came off on a sour note. I didn't mean to discredit your achievements. I meant "heavy video editing" as in something comparable to an 25 minute episode of a tv show. But that is something I will never do, nor would ever need from a laptop.
On another note, I love your RUclips channel. I am currently using larbs and have been making my own tweaks to it. It is a great learning tool for me and has greatly increased my productivity. I probably wouldn't have learned of all the wonders of arch/parabola until months from now if it wasn't for you. Thank you.
Oh no, I didn't interpret anything as sour. I don't doubt if you're doing something heavier than what I'm doing the returns to having an i7 are way greater. I'm just voicing a suspicion of the usefulness of these processors to average people who just use a browser, MS word and a music player all day.

Appreciate the Thinkpad shilling. Put myself out $200 for a good quality refurbished x230 and a new 9-cell, does all I require and more, no more sluggish than the MacBook I had been using. Then sold the MacBook Pro and netted about $500 at the end of it all. Probably not as free as a Librem but I simply don't have the money at this point
I have heard they addressed the issue of ME activation in their processors. I do not know how they do it. Either by flipping the bit or using the python script, but that worth checking this.

Let me start with context, I am obessed with the idea of being able to make everything myself. Not that I want to, just having that option. This has led to think about how to do exactly what your saying, (perhaps more extremly). The issues I have found so far are:
1. I'm shit at 3d modeling, I have looking at 3d scanning software to help reduce the amount of stuff I do from scratch, but its hit or miss
2. Making PCBs is laughed at in a lot of DIY circles
I was wondering if you need of good resources for either one.
Currently I use blender for modeling, am playing with open-drone map for scanning, and use lulz-bots over-priced (but they support making things more open so I pay it) 3d printer
Making PCBs though seams super hard. I mean 3d-printed circuts are easier, but so terrible on effiency that it is rarely useful in most use cases (as far as I know, any changes to this idea would be welcome news to me).

Purism laptops are actually modular. You can change every single thing inside the computer yourself and purism sells you these parts too. Plus they come with philips screws. I'm getting a Librem 13 next month.
Whats about the battery life for these thinkpads? I don't need much processing power, but battery life is a big deal for me.
You left out screen quality. Screen looks way better on a 2020 purism laptop than it will on some old core2 system. No way around that. I'd even be open to upgrading the screen, but then the core2 laptop's gpu wouldn't handle it well. So if you want that modern goodness, and all us overly visual people do, you want something a lot newer than core2.

Yes you're right, but GNU name needs to go. It sounds stupid and people sound stupid when pronouncing it. Linux sounds great, even if it technically (until now) isn't correct. Let's just let GNU (name) go and keep it only on Wikipedia and "About" pages.

The Purism laptops are anodised aluminium too. They have a kind of MacBook premium feel. Something like a Dell XPS is also expensive
The reason you can't disable the ME (management engine) completely is that modern computers use the ME as the south bridge. The scripts that cleans the ME disable it after post when the bios hands it over to the OS. basically, there is a flag in the bios for disabling it, that flag was requested by government agencies because they were afraid of backdoors or something like that.
The problem with buying old laptops with core2 duo cpu's is that the materials are breaking down because of being heated and cooled all the time. so the hinge is more likely to fail on the laptop.
Maybe AMD laptops are the way to go.

When you by from Purism you pay for jobs in the free hardware industry. If we were all buying old ThinkPads they finally get all used up and there will be no alternative because the market for new free hardware was zero for years.

with "me_cleaner" you can deactivate the intel ME. purism does that in addition to cleaning the ME software.
Have you ever looked into the Bunnie Hwang laptop? It's open source and even has an FPGA on it.
Benefit of Linux is practical and cheap hardware. I have heard of bios chips being flashed with Linux kernel, effectively creating ssd boot drive with legacy laptop.

I think eventually everyone's phone WILL BE their computer and by that I mean we will basically just have docking stations with monitors everywhere like our workplace, vehicles, home, etc. and when you're done you would just disconnect and go. I mean, as time progresses on we have basically eliminated the use of so many things that we use on the daily by just including it into one device which just happens to be our phone. Now whether or not that's a good thing is still up for debate.

Didn't ME cleaner neutralize ME? It removes its TCP/IP stack and removes everything except components required for a successful boot IIRC.

They serve an ever growing market, people that may not have, time, knowledge, or someone they can trust, to set up a computer. Purism is way, way more secure than a standard/off the shelf unit. The price you pay for security is generally proportional to the amount you have to lose i guess. To me, $1500 - $2000 USD is cheap for a new/with warranty system like this.

Been lurking around the libreboot and coreboot websites after your videos and noticed, the section about "How to get hardware with coreboot" and the last line:
"Purism manufactures security focused laptops designed chip by chip to work with free/libre and open source software. Purism laptops are the only independently-made, brand new, high-performance laptops on the market specifically meant to pair recent technologies with coreboot and a neutralized Intel Management Engine. "
So, it seems that it has coreboot. Which is the same as libreboot?
No, Libreboot is a version of coreboot that doesn't load non-libre blobs at all, including the Intel Management Engine. Libreboot only works on machines on which the Intel Management Engine as been totally removed not "neutralized" or "disabled".
Don't pay attention to Purism's marketing. Their computers still have the ME, and if you look at even the sources they use (blog.ptsecurity.com/2017/08/disabling-intel-me.html) they acknowledge that the ME still starts at boot.
Purism tries to push people into the assumption that the ME just isn't working on their computers, but the fact of the matter is that the ME still initializes the main processor. Their contention is that due to an exploit you can make the ME inert after initialization.
