- So I loved Rudolph's Shiny New Year as a kid, and watching it now I realize... well, it's actually terrible. But this one scene is still pretty cool. Unfortunately this is also the one scene that they cut out to make room for commercials when they show it on TV now. So uh... here it is, in case you remembered this when you watched the movie years ago and couldn't find it since and thought you were crazy.

Such a great scene. I do not understand why it was taken out of the current showings. This is like the whole point of the show! Oh well it's good to see it again.
They want more time for commercials, and it was probably seen as the most expendable song

Little known fact everyone, Father Time was played by Red Skelton in this special.
And i thought Red Buttons was a strange name.
His real named was Richard. "Red" because of his hair.
Father Time even looked like Red Skelton.

This was also my personal favorite and it has grown to have more meaning to me now that I’m older.
This is one of the songs from the old Rankin-Bass holiday specials that has most stayed with me since childhood. Thanks for sharing this clip; it's a poignant and hopeful song both at once.

For the regular Rudolph clay mation special, they cut out the part when Yukon Cornelius finally strikes it rich - with a peppermint mine.Through the whole thing a person wants him to find something (He always goes "Nothing"), and they cut that out.
This song always made me cry as a kid. I was an emotional kid. lol I don't know if it was because of lost loved ones, or just the reminder of how fast time goes and what is gone is gone. I wish they didn't cut this song out when it airs on TV.
I always watched it on vhs as a kid this was my favorite scene too and it also made me emotional even as a kid glad too see someone else felt the same

As far as I am concerned, this is the best two minutes of any stop-motion or cartoon of t he era.
This song is one of the greatest moments in the entirety of the Rankin-Bass series of specials. It is a sobering reminder to treasure every moment, because we don't know how many we will get, or how many are left.
Thank you i was so mad when i realized last year they cut this from the TV airings, my grandmother showed me all these christmas specials as a kid and this scene made here cry because it reminded her of my grandfather. Its important to me to see it since it reminds me of both of then now since passed. I dont understand why the cut such a beautiful message but thank you for uploading it.

This and 'Turn Back the Years' are the 2 songs that stuck in my head from the first viewing of this show when I was a kid. I watched it when it first aired in '76, so...I guess I'm old now. ;)

AMC is more about the movies than making money, in my opinion.
Fortunately, their the Walking Dead series made them enough that they can afford to show more uncut movies.

They always cut out thw best scenes in the Rankin and Bass films. Like in "Santa Clause is coming to Town" they cut Mrs Clause identity crises musical number and the toy burning scene.

I didn't know they had other versions of these specials.
This scene was restored and it’s uncut recently airs on AMC.
Its sad to trash something that is apart of something that is impactful and can make people feel and think over others actions good or bad.

Believe it or not, the calendar shown in this clip was the Cursed Calendar for more than half a century. This was the calendar for 1962, 1973, 1979, 1990, 2001, and 2007. Those were the years of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Arab Oil Embargo, the Iranian Revolution/Iranian Hostage Crisis, the Persian Gulf Crisis, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the beginning of the Great Recession - all of the worst things to happen to the United States during that period. It appears that 2018 was the year that curse was finally broken.

I hate the fact they hacked the this and similar songs out of the specials I grew up with just so they could fit in more commercials. The sad thing is by law they only had to have 22 minutes of for each 30 minute period and at 50 minutes long the stations had to option of hacking out a full 6 minutes from the show .
It's extremely sad, and it makes me angry. I really don't care about commercials! I understand the need for them, but I don't see why it's necessary to cut out bits of a show or movie to make room for more of them.
WHY NOT REMOVE ALL THE SPECIALS AND PLACE 24/7 COMMERCIALS WITH 24/7 NEWS??

@@SpectrumAssociates Sadly the FCC regulations of 22 minutes of actual show for each 30 minute block only broadcast TV - not to cable or internet TV channels. More over they are limited to the old 6:00 AM - 11:00 PM block which is why things like Night Owl Theater has so many commercials.

These Rankin Bass films are so mythological. It's weird, they really play like myths for children.
By the time he gets to July, he looks like Chris Kringle from "Santa Claus is Comin to Town"---("A choo-choo! I always wanted a choo-choo!!)

I watched Rudolph 2 a few years back. I didn’t remember the plot, the characters, the conflict, or pretty much any of it. But Father Time…I remembered Father Time. They had no right to slap us with some actual depth in what was otherwise a pretty shallow sequel. I almost wonder if Father Time was supposed to be his own thing, in a separate movie altogether, but they couldn’t get it down quite right and just decided to make him the focus of their Rudolph sequel.
This has been released on DVD in full.
You know what else I noticed about their edits? They cut and snip the dialogue from the scene where Rudolph first sets out, such as removing practically all of Ticker's dialogue.
I wonder if the guy singing in here is dead now?

Sadly that happens a lot and the reason has to do with money. Less show=more commercials. More commercials=more money.

This is a good song, but this scene is confusing. Do Baby New Years grow up so fast into Father Times like that? And didn't Santa say Father Time was his old friend at one point?
Well, yes they do, You know the people that Rudolph meets while on his adventure to find the Baby New year? You know the cave man, the knight and the old guy? Well, they are all people who used to be Father Time at one point, then they went off to live on the Time islands, as for Santa, i have no idea why he said Old Friends, unless he means old for the standards of a New Year.

Interesting! I have the deleted scene on the movie that my mom recorded when it use to come on the Disney Channel. Guess this is recent, because the scene did nothing to me when I was kid. It totally went over my head, Oh well.

Rudolph reveals that one of the islands of last years was 1965 and the movie was shown in 1976. The only year in that period with January 1 falling on a Monday (seen in the song) is 1973. The only other years in the 20th century (19 wonderful) after 1973 with January 1 on a Monday are 1979 and 1990.
The best damn song of the whole show, and those fools at ABC-TV cut it out when they aired it last week (12/30/08)!

I agree regarding the story and the song. The story made even less sense if you knew about other calendars such as the Jewish or the old Julian calendar (which is STILL in use in some places in the world today) The one interesting thing it that what ever year the show was set in it had to after 1965 as Rudolph comments that island was "too noisy".
Some of Rudolph comments's are funny though. "1893 never heard of him (happy), 1492 was too busy discovering things to even talk to us, and all 4000 BC could think about was building pyramids."
On a side note if 1023 was really when all those fairy tales really happened then that would be one SCARY year especially if you use the versions the Grimms originally found.

+FilmmakeroftheFuture That wasn't my point. My point was the New Year for those other calendars started on another day other then January 1 on the Gregorian calendar. For example, New Year's day in Julian calendar is January 14 on the Gregorian calendar.
Also many places didn't have January 1 as their New Year; this why for many places under British rule Given 1751 only lasted 282 days.
Finally, given that we have One Million BC there would have to be over a million islands in the Archipelago of Last Years just to handle the years from the Gregorian calendar.
It's just a cartoon show. You really need to relax man.
