There has been an underlying level of antisemitism in Ireland for many years now being openly expressed by Harris and Martin. The lack of empathy by officials of the Irish government for Israel and its people is reprehensible and nauseating.
Ireland said it's for human rights and so do all these commenters. So how often have they demanded Hamas release hostages and told Hamas to recognize Israel.
THE IRISH GOVERNMENT has once again called for the release of hostages in Gaza, one year on from the 7 October terror attacks in Israel led by militant group Hamas. The attacks by Hamas resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures. More than 240 hostages were taken, 97 of whom remain unaccounted for. Tánaiste Micheál Martin said: “The horror of these attacks remains imprinted in our minds. I reiterate Ireland’s unequivocal condemnation of them. “I think today of the hostages still in Gaza and their families who desperately want them home. I call again for their immediate release.” Taoiseach Simon Harris joined Martin in his call, saying: “I repeat my call that all remaining hostages must be released immediately and without conditions.”
Ireland's narrative has been very consistent. They've condemned hamas and demanded the release of all hostages on hundreds of occasions. They've also repeatedly said they're in favour of a two state solution.
@Steven-kr2ti On hundreds of occasions, I don't believe that for a second. What about Hamas recognizing Israel in my original comment? The fact they won't is the entire source of conflict. Where were the Irish government's hundreds of comments on Palestinian rights the last 18 years as Hamas held power as a proscribed terrorist organization violently suppressing dissent?

I call again for their immediate release.”
Taoiseach Simon Harris joined Martin in his call, saying: “I repeat my call that all remaining hostages must be released immediately and without conditions.”
The growth of anti- semitism in Ireland in the past thirty years is shameful. Our political discourse has become gradually infantilised and led by increasingly immature political actors. The actions of our politicians mocking our neutrality by joining Ireland to a South African court case at the ICJ against Israel is deplorable. This was the last straw for Israel.

There is an refusal to apply common sense and basic facts. Ireland should address it's own history and stop conflating it with what is happening in the Middle East. I feel that the identification with the Palestinian cause is tangled up in Irelands history with the British. It would make more sense to address one's own history than conflate: Israel=Britsh colonizers and Palestinian = Irish. This metaphor does not work. We are talking about different times, places and histories. One should be aware of one's own complex history before somehow superimposing it onto a completely different conflict that one knows nothing about. The fact that Hamas once again praised the Irish government ought to be enough to make politicians take stock.

Why invest in a lost cause? It is called common sense. Israel doesn't mind criticism, as the Ambassador clearly mentioned and this excuse for a journalist chose to ignore. It is a common sense decision. Duh!
